Tween Writing Club
by Liz Emery 30 Nov '22

30 Nov '22

Hello, We have gotten a request from a patron to do a Tween Writing Club at our library, and I am looking for some feedback from any other libraries who may offer this program. Do library staff run the program, or let the kids take the lead? Do you create activities or prompts, or just give independent writing time for kids to work on what they're already writing? Thank you for any input you may have. Library Cell Phone plans
by Andrea Ingmire 30 Nov '22

30 Nov '22

Hi all, We have a library cell phone plan, and a couple of us have library paid cell phones as a part of that plan. I'm curious if any of you have moved away from library paid plans to more of a flat subsidy for employees who use their personal cell for work related tasks? More and more our supervisors have been using their personal cell phones to handle library business, especially in relation to dealing with patron issues calling police etc. While we can't afford to add everyone to our cell phone plan, it makes me think that there should be some form of compensation paid to our supervisors for this purpose. I wondered what other libraries did in this regard. Many thanks, Andrea ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ [logo-blue -building] Andrea Ingmire Library Director Peter White Public Library (906) 226-4303 (office) (906) 250-0080 (cell) (906) 226-1783 (fax) www.pwpl.info<http://www.pwpl.info/>

Label Printer Recommendations
by Melissa Adkins 30 Nov '22

30 Nov '22

Good Morning All, I'm looking to purchase some new label printers. I've generally been satisfied with the Dymo LabelWriter 440 in the past, but I've heard some concerning things about the newer 550 model. I'm not familiar with the wireless version, either, and was wondering if anybody can give me some insight into their experiences with these, or recommend alternatives that they like. Feel free to contact me off list if needed! Thanks! Melissa Adkins (she/her) Library Director Ecorse Public Library 4184 W. Jefferson Ave. Ecorse, MI 48229

Jigsaw Puzzle Tournament--puzzle swap
by Betsy Myers 29 Nov '22

29 Nov '22

Hi! After several successful years of jigsaw puzzle tournaments, we are in need of some fresh (but all the same) puzzles for our upcoming puzzle tournament. This event is on February 5th--nothing like a last minute decision, right? We are in search of 12 of the same puzzles anywhere from 500-1000 pieces--we aren't that particular. It could even be 6 of the same puzzle if we can also find another set of 6 of a different puzzle. We are willing to swap our puzzles for yours as long as they can be returned after your tournament and vice versa. Our puzzles consist of 2 different beautiful flowers photographed by a local photographer, Mark Lyndsay (8 puzzles each, 500 pieces). We also have 13 different puzzles by the same manufacturer (Buried Blueprints, puzzles from the past by BePuzzled, 1000 pieces each)--our patrons hated this tournament, the puzzles were hard! And finally we have 2 sets of 12 puzzles and 1 set of 11 puzzles (3 different themes, 500 pieces) by Cra-Z-art--you know, the ones from the Dollar Store? We used these once and some of the puzzles, even though unopened, were missing pieces. I *think* we got rid of the ones missing pieces but you take your chance with those--kind of makes the tournament exciting. We used these in an individual tournament, the others in teams. Anyone willing to share/swap or just let us borrow your puzzles in February? Thank you! -- *Betsy Myers* Reference Department Interlibrary Loan/Programming *Traverse Area District Library* 610 Woodmere Ave Traverse City, MI 49686 231 932-8502 I am listening to Boys from Biloxi by John Grisham and browsing through cookbooks for the holidays!

Spotlight on Safety: Addressing Threats in Public Libraries
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 29 Nov '22

29 Nov '22

A virtual town hall to address the recent targeted attacks on public libraries If you are having trouble viewing this mailing, please click here<https://americanlibraryassociation.informz.net/informzdataservice/onlinever…> for our online version. [Hexagons connecting with icons representing safety (security camera, lock, alarm, etc.)]<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Famericanli…> Safety on Spotlight: Addressing Threats in Public Libraries Wednesday, November 30, 2022 | 1:00-2:00 p.m. Central This free virtual town hall is presented by the Public Library Association (PLA) in collaboration with the Urban Libraries Council (ULC) and the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) Public libraries are increasingly responding to violent and inflammatory speech and targeted attacks on their buildings, workers, and patrons. Over the last two weeks of September, libraries in five cities faced bomb or shooting threats that resulted in canceled events and closures. These incidents also come directly on the heels of widespread intimidation related to censorship in the past year. Thankfully, no one was hurt in these recent threats, but the stress and disruption of service take a toll on library workers and the communities they serve. Facing such threats to our basic safety can often be traumatic and isolating. The Public Library Association (PLA)-in collaboration with the Urban Libraries Council (ULC) and the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL)-invites all library workers to join a virtual event to reflect and share with public library colleagues across the country. During this event, panelists will participate in a facilitated conversation that explores effective policies and practices to improve safety and security for library staff and patrons, and invites questions and resources to be shared among all attendees.
