Virtual Presentation on federal government contracts
by Paula Drummond 06 Dec '22

06 Dec '22

The Ypsilanti District Library partners with the Ann Arbor Area SCORE office to offer virtual programs of interest to small business owners, entrepreneurs, and those interested in starting a small business. On Dec 14th, we're offering a free presentation on Zoom on federal government contracts, which can be challenging to those unfamiliar with government contracting. Here is the program description: " The Federal Government awarded $154B of contracts to small businesses in FY 21. Have you ever thought about getting a small piece of that pie? This session will outline the fundamental steps and techniques you need to potentially obtain federal contracts. We will discuss the approach that any company business can use as well as the special set aside categories of procurement that exist. In addition, we will discuss federal and local resources that are available to help you achieve success." This program is free. Please feel free to share this information with anyone you think may be interested, including your library patrons, anyone is welcome to attend! Please note that you must register for this program in order to get the Zoom meeting link; it will be sent to all registrants a couple of days in advance of the program. Here's the link to the event page, where you register: https://attend.ypsilibrary.org/event/7421230 If you have any questions, feel free to contact me directly. -- Paula C. Summer Reading Kick-Off Hires
by Elisabeth Phou 06 Dec '22

06 Dec '22

Hello! Has anyone hired someone for summer reading kick-off that patrons of all ages really loved? Entertainment, food, anything! We will be outside signing people up and want something fun for people to do. We are in a downtown area, surrounded by streets and sidewalks, so that is a limitation to consider. Thank you! Damaged Items
by Maria Halvorsen 06 Dec '22

06 Dec '22

Hey all, I'm seeking some advice on this lovely Monday afternoon. We've been having a recurring issue with a patron damaging new items. The items are returned with a very intense odor, staining, general discoloration, and even small debris on the exterior of the book or in between the pages. We have very strong reason to believe that the staining and odor is from animal urine. My first instinct is to simply discard the items, since they were all kept together in what appears to be a urine-stained bag with a very similar odor. While some books are in better condition than others upon return, we have some concerns about putting any of them back into the collection. While we have the means to remedy odor, we simply don't have a good way to sanitize them. That said, I'm not sure what the best practice is here and I hate to lose so many new titles at once. Does anyone have experience with this? What are your related policies? Any advice would be most welcome! Thanks in advance, Maria Halvorsen (She/Her) Fraser Public Library _Cataloging and Reference Librarian_ (586) 293-2055

Library Director Opportunity - Chesterfield Township
by Brian Mortimore 05 Dec '22

05 Dec '22

Library Director Job Posting South-Eastern Michigan Library Director Opportunity The Chesterfield Township Library Board of Trustees is proud to present an opportunity for an experienced leader who is eager to help the library meet its increasing demands. The seeds are planted as property for the future home of a new library has been purchased in this growing community. With a steady dose of sunshine in the form of stable funding, the next director will leverage existing space with a vision for what ‘can be’ for a new community library when the community is ready. Who we seek Do you have a passion for being the chief representative of the community library? Do you network well with business and community leaders? Do you seek the synergy of collaboration with others to enhance marketing and community programming? Do you have an eye for balancing the need for expanding library services with an eye towards balancing tax-payer concerns? If so, please read on. The Chesterfield Township Library is located a half-hour northeast of Detroit near Anchor Bay on beautiful Lake St. Clair. The convenience and warmth of a small community nestled on the outskirts of a major city, together offering cultural, sporting, arts, and outdoor activities, makes this an ideal setting to leverage your goals of a better work life balance. The current library building may be toured virtually here: https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=UeoupciShye&ts=1. The team at Chesterfield has recently undergone an ILS conversion to Polaris. The next Director will play an integral role in setting the direction for the future in concert with the trustees, staff, and community. Chesterfield is a Class 5 (soon to be Class 6) public library, a member of the Suburban Library Cooperative, serving a population of over 46,000, with a strong fund balance. The library operates and is governed under separate authority from the township and is not a department of the local municipality. The new director will inherit a dedicated staff who are goal oriented and driven towards continuous quality improvement, as witnessed in their collective efforts with QSAC (‘Essential’ in 2019, ‘Enhanced’ in 2022). With engagement in the community as liaisons to the historical society, parks and recreation, chamber and local business organizations, senior residences, and civic organizations, the team actively supports the director as ambassadors of the library in the community. Qualifications and Compensation Qualified candidates will have a Master of Library Science degree, a Level-1 certificate from the Library of Michigan (or be eligible for certification prior to appointment), and a demonstrated history of at least three to five years of progressive responsibility managing a public library or a department within a public library. The ideal candidate will possess strong people and communication skills, applying them in regular interactions within the business community, the network of libraries, and the local municipalities, serving as the face of the library. The Chesterfield Township Library offers a starting salary of $91,319 with the ability to grow, along with competitive benefits. Candidates interested in learning more should visit www.chelibrary.org. <http://www.chelibrary.org/> Those interested in applying should send their resume, cover letter, and three references to: MortimoreConsulting(a)gmail.com . The deadline for the first review and consideration of applicants will be Wednesday, December 28th. Interested candidates should apply immediately as phone intake interviews are being scheduled immediately.
