Fax Services
by NW Amy Stockwell 12 Dec '22

We have a traditional fax machine that has officially decided to go out to pasture. Now is the perfect time to consider moving into the 21st century on this service. Can anyone recommend a fax service that we should look into rather than purchasing another machine? Thanks!

As part of a nationwide initiative to learn connected learning together, the team is organizing ConnectedLibFEST<https://web.cvent.com/event/b127a1d4-3295-4867-94f1-25fc4e791362/summary>. This FREE virtual experience takes place on Wednesday and Thursday, March 15 and 16, 2023, from 1 PM to 5 PM Eastern. Each day brings together library staff, researchers, and community members to learn from and with each other about bringing connected learning to small and rural library settings. Small and rural libraries are already using the principles of connected learning in their work. They do this by building relationships with youth, community members, and stakeholders; fostering interests of teens through library services; and creating opportunities for academic and life success. You can learn more about connected learning at the ConnectedLib website<https://connectedlib.github.io/about/>. * Do you work in a small or rural library? * Do you work with small and rural library staff? * Have you thought about how connected learning and small and rural libraries are a match made in heaven? * Do you want to learn more about connected learning and small and rural libraries and communities? Did you answer "yes" to any of these questions? If so, then ConnectedLibFEST is the event for you! We recently added a program to the ConnectedLibFest, featuring Dr. Mimi Ito<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fconnected…>, who will join us to have a conversation with rural library staff. *********** Potential Topics: * What is connected learning and why is it something small and rural libraries should know about? * How do I get started designing connected learning services in my small or rural community? * What are some ways to build community-centered connected learning services? * How to transform existing services, using your library's and community's assets, to align with connected learning? * And others that you might suggest. If this sounds like something you would like to be involved in either as an attendee or a presenter, fill out our form<https://web.cvent.com/event/b127a1d4-3295-4867-94f1-25fc4e791362/summary> by December 15, 2022, and we will be back in touch. ------------------------------ Mega Subramaniam Professor University of Maryland, USA ------------------------------

Job Posting: Flint: seeking 2 adult librarians and one children's!
by Kay Schwartz 10 Dec '22

(Sorry for second posting: forgot to put keywords "job posting" in the subject line! - K) Hi, everyone, At Flint Public Library, we are seeking two adult librarians and a children's learning specialist (children's librarian). This is a rare opportunity to join a team of dedicated staff who serve a community that loves and supports its library. Last spring, we completed a renovation that created a "like-new" library building with twice the space for children, twice the space for digital services, a dedicated local history and genealogy space, and 19 public meeting rooms. There's even an "eating area" in both the adult and children's spaces. The new library is ready to be activated with new programs and services. You can be a part of that! FW: Michigan's Minimum Wage Set to Increase, Challenge the FCC's Broadband Map and more!

Please see below for additional information on the possible upcoming changes to minimum wage and paid leave. Thanks! Clare Clare D. Membiela, MLS, J.D. You should contact your attorney to obtain advice with respect to any particular issue or problem. "The dissemination of ideas can accomplish nothing if otherwise willing addressees are not free to receive and consider them. It would be a barren marketplace of ideas that had only sellers and no buyers." Lamont v. Postmaster General, 381 U.S. 301 From: Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity <LEO(a)govsubscriptions.michigan.gov> Sent: Friday, December 9, 2022 2:02 PM To: Membiela, Clare (MDE) <MembielaC(a)michigan.gov> Subject: Michigan's Minimum Wage Set to Increase, Challenge the FCC's Broadband Map and more! [LEO Banner] Michigan's Minimum Wage Set to Increase on January 1, 2023 [Waiter placing coffee on table.]On January 1, 2023, Michigan's minimum wage rate will increase from $9.87 to $10.10 per hour as set by Michigan's Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act of 2018<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> establishing the annual schedule of increases. Effective January 1, 2023: * The minimum hourly wage will increase to $10.10 per hour. * The 85% rate for minors aged 16 and 17 will increase to $8.59 per hour. * The tipped employee rate of hourly pay increases to $3.84 per hour. * The training wage of $4.25 per hour for newly hired employees ages 16 to 19 for their first 90 days of employment remains unchanged. There is pending litigation that might affect this minimum wage increase: * In 2018, a petition initiative organized by One Fair Wage sought to allow voters to decide on raising Michigan's minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2022 and raise the minimum wage for tipped workers to 80% of the standard minimum wage in 2022, 90% in 2023 and ultimately match it in 2024. * The Legislature adopted the legislation and then amended it in 2018, putting in lower wage thresholds that increased the minimum wage to $12.05 by 2030 instead of 2022 and kept the tipped minimum wage at 38% of the standard one. As a result, the state's current hourly minimum wage is $9.87 and $3.75 for workers who are expected to make up the difference in tips. * The Legislature's amendment has been challenged in court as unconstitutional. On July 19, 2022, the Court of Claims issued a decision that agreed with that challenge and voided the amended versions of the Michigan Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act and Paid Medical Leave Act in favor of their original, unamended versions. * On July 29, 2022, the Court of Claims entered an order staying the effect of this decision until February 19, 2023, to give employers and the relevant state agencies time to accommodate the changes required by the ruling. * The Court of Claims' ruling has been appealed. Pending final resolution of the appeal, and lifting of the stay, under the potential implementation of the originally adopted petition, the minimum wage rate for 2023 would be $13.03 and $11.73 for tipped employees. For further information regarding the pending minimum wage litigation, and potential amended minimum wage rates as a result of that litigation, or a copy of the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act and related resources, including the required poster, visit Michigan.gov/WageHour<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. [Orange Divider] The Michigan High-Speed Internet Office is Urging Every Michigander to Challenge the FCC Broadband Map [Internet cables]LEO's High-Speed Internet Office (MIHI) is encouraging all Michiganders to challenge the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) new National Broadband Map. Since high-speed internet is not available to nearly half a million homes in Michigan, the state is urging every Michigander to check their home and business address on the preliminary broadband map to ensure it accurately reflects their level of internet access. MIHI is working to challenge the map too, but it's important for everyone across the state to know how to view and challenge the map. Here's how to access the FCC broadband map: 1. Visit broadbandmap.fcc.gov/home here<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>, then type in an address and see if the reported coverage is accurate. You can access the site from a computer or a mobile device. 2. Residents can submit a challenge by clicking "Location Challenge" if the location of their home or business is missing or incorrect, or "Availability Challenge" if the internet service information is incorrect. 3. Residents should visit the website of any internet service provider that claims to serve their location and use the website's "Check Availability" or similar tool to determine if the provider can serve their location. 4. If they can't, a screenshot of their website can be submitted to the FCC as evidence for an Availability Challenge. To ensure an accurate map is used for funding decisions, all challenges must be submitted by January 13, 2023. Library Director - Willard Public Library (IN) The Willard Public Library (IN)<https://willard.lib.in.us/> Board of Trustees seeks a trusted leader to be the voice of the library in the community and serve as its next Library Director. As the oldest public library building in Indiana, Willard Public Library honors its legacy with robust genealogy and history collections, dynamic programming, and as a world-famous ghost-hunting site - home to the Grey Lady. Trustees are appointed by a combination of the Board of County Commissioners, the County Council, by the local school board, and the Evansville-Vanderburgh Public Library Board. The director will work with 16 FTE, a $1.3 million budget, and a single facility to ensure its patrons have access to historical, recreational, educational, and cultural materials free of charge. Key initiatives include promoting the library to a new generation of lifelong learners, working with the board to develop a strategic plan, helping the library keep pace with technological trends, and leading and supporting staff through open communication and collaboration. Evansville, Indiana - the state's third largest city - offers a combination of big-town amenities and midwestern sensibilities with an active and historical downtown. Situated on the Ohio River in Southwestern Indiana, Evansville has unique neighborhoods, and events to enjoy year-round. Families enjoy attractions like the Mesker Park Zoo, the Children's Museum of Evansville, an increasingly vibrant arts and dining scene, and an extensive greenway system. The University of Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana offer higher educational opportunities and residents enjoy a low cost of living and being in close proximity to five major cities. Responsibilities: The Library Director is responsible for the managerial oversight of the facilities, staff, finances, fundraising, and all associated public relations for the library. The Director is charged with the administration of the policies and procedures of the organization in accordance with its articles of incorporation and by-laws, national and local laws, and relevant authorities, as well as charged with implementing the decisions of the Board of Trustees. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to ensuring effective systems to track and administer the fiduciary functions of the library; establishing and enforcing procedures and policies for the effective operations of all library functions; acting as an official library contact point for all members of the media and government officials and agencies; and directing the activities of library staff including scheduling and fulfillment of duties assigned. Qualifications: A minimum of three years of relevant experience, demonstrated success in a leadership position (ideally a cultural organization), and an ALA-accredited master's degree in Library Science is required. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, a proven track record of visionary leadership, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to effectively lead, grow, and develop the library staff. Compensation: The hiring salary range is $80,000 - $95,000 (with placement negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package.
