Building Community-Based Summers: Tri-State In-Person Workshops
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 15 Oct '26

15 Oct '26

Building Community-Based Summers: Tri-State In-Person Workshops * Thursday, November 5, 2026 - from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm at the Main Library, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, 325 N. Michigan St, Toledo, Ohio. Free Parking is available. Registration: https://forms.gle/H1v37vAk1wzPT5W59 * Thursday, November 19, 2026 - from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm at the Meijer Branch, Jackson District Library, 2699 Airport Rd., Jackson, MI 49202. Free parking is available. Registration: https://forms.gle/wUsExGchA63cWhxo6 Both workshops will cover the same BCBS content; register for the date and location of your choice. Registration is free. Description: Over the last few years public libraries in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio have participated in cohorts of the Building Community-Based Summers (BCBS) national IMLS project. Through learning sessions and activities, BCBS helps libraries develop new thinking and strategies about summer services in four key areas: Rethinking Internal Systems, Fostering a Culture of Learning, Centering Community, and Reflecting Continuously about summer services and their impact. These BCBS Workshops are being offered to any IN, MI, and OH library workers who are interested in evaluating and reassessing their summer services. Attendees will participate in a variety of activities to help them view their summer services through fresh eyes at a critical time of the year as they plan for next summer. The facilitators will share a brief history and background about BCBS for those unfamiliar with the project, and details for those who wish to be trained more deeply regarding the BCBS learning topics and strategies. The workshops will also include much time for discussion and sharing, to learn what libraries are planning to better reach all their communities and to provide ideas and strategies to address challenges. Who should register? To support your ability to implement BCBS strategies in your community, we highly encourage 2 or more staff members from your library or system to register and attend the workshop. Staff working in any department, especially those with a focus on public programming, are welcome to attend. Facilitators: Bringing extensive experience with BCBS, facilitators Cathy Lancaster (Library of Michigan), Katy Hite (State Library of Ohio), Janet Ingraham Dwyer (State Library of Ohio), and Beth Yates (Indiana State Library), will offer key insights. They will discuss how applying BCBS framework processes enables libraries to design more adaptive summer services and programs tailored to local needs and community perspectives. Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to: * Explain briefly the history of the Building Community- Based Summers (BCBS) project and its four key principles * Identify their library organization’s “why” of summer services * Name examples of strategies that other libraries have implemented to build greater community involvement into their summer services * Identify one or two action steps your library could take to help build more community voice into your summer services Feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions. SUMMER READING SURVEY NOW OPEN!
by Williams, Barbara (MDE) 09 Sep '26

09 Sep '26

[cid:image001.jpg@01DD1826.CBB62A40] The Collaborative Summer Library Program's (CSLP) annual survey is now open and will close Friday, September 14, 2026. CSLP has created a survey so they can better assess the usefulness of the materials offered by the program on a national level to better serve you, the CSLP membership! All public libraries in Michigan are CSLP members thanks to the Library of Michigan with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The survey can be found here: https://forms.gle/QKN5qduWz9QRV8nf8 If you would like to view the survey in PDF form before completing it, you can find that here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10eiU10iKoV2zapQmWj9HWHVbLfycnPSk/view FAQs Who should complete this survey? The audience for the survey is public library staff who played an active role in administering or running 2026 summer library programming. One person per library could fill it out, or multiple library staff from the same library could complete the sections of the survey most relevant to their work, e.g. children, teen, or adult programs. * Please coordinate with your colleagues on who will fill it out, especially if you are in a multi-branch system. * This does NOT need to be filled out by Directors. (Adult/YA/Children program overseers can complete their own portions.) * EVEN IF YOU DID NOT USE "UNEARTH A STORY" AS YOUR THEME, we invite you to complete the survey! Is this survey required? No, it is not required, but we would appreciate your input. Every library that responds helps us get a more accurate picture of overall satisfaction with the program. I want to be prepared. What info will I need to provide? * General feedback on using (or not) the 2026 program theme and materials; * Feedback and info about how/whether you tracked participation, as well as stats for participation and programming for children (ages 0-11), teens (12-18) and adults. You may skip some questions for which you don't have the answers. I suggest you wait until your summer program has ended to complete the survey. When does the survey close? The survey is open from now until Friday, September 14, 2026. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you in advance for sharing your input! In August 2024, the Library launched a campaign to build a statewide collection of yearbooks from Michigan high schools, colleges, universities, and vocational schools. During the first year of the project, 3,000 yearbooks were donated. With another year now complete, we've doubled that number to more than 6,000 yearbooks, all either on the shelves or in the processing queue to be cataloged before being added to the collection. This project would not have been possible without the schools, libraries, museums, historical societies, genealogical organizations, and individual donors who have contributed yearbooks to the collection. Each yearbook offers a snapshot of the lives of Michiganders and preserves the stories of communities across our state. We look forward to another year of growing this unique collection.
