15 Oct '26

Building Community-Based Summers: Tri-State In-Person Workshops * Thursday, November 5, 2026 - from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm at the Main Library, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, 325 N. Michigan St, Toledo, Ohio. Free Parking is available. Registration: https://forms.gle/H1v37vAk1wzPT5W59 * Thursday, November 19, 2026 - from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm at the Meijer Branch, Jackson District Library, 2699 Airport Rd., Jackson, MI 49202. Free parking is available. Registration: https://forms.gle/wUsExGchA63cWhxo6 Both workshops will cover the same BCBS content; register for the date and location of your choice. Registration is free. Description: Over the last few years public libraries in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio have participated in cohorts of the Building Community-Based Summers (BCBS) national IMLS project. Through learning sessions and activities, BCBS helps libraries develop new thinking and strategies about summer services in four key areas: Rethinking Internal Systems, Fostering a Culture of Learning, Centering Community, and Reflecting Continuously about summer services and their impact. These BCBS Workshops are being offered to any IN, MI, and OH library workers who are interested in evaluating and reassessing their summer services. Attendees will participate in a variety of activities to help them view their summer services through fresh eyes at a critical time of the year as they plan for next summer. The facilitators will share a brief history and background about BCBS for those unfamiliar with the project, and details for those who wish to be trained more deeply regarding the BCBS learning topics and strategies. The workshops will also include much time for discussion and sharing, to learn what libraries are planning to better reach all their communities and to provide ideas and strategies to address challenges. Who should register? To support your ability to implement BCBS strategies in your community, we highly encourage 2 or more staff members from your library or system to register and attend the workshop. Staff working in any department, especially those with a focus on public programming, are welcome to attend. Facilitators: Bringing extensive experience with BCBS, facilitators Cathy Lancaster (Library of Michigan), Katy Hite (State Library of Ohio), Janet Ingraham Dwyer (State Library of Ohio), and Beth Yates (Indiana State Library), will offer key insights. They will discuss how applying BCBS framework processes enables libraries to design more adaptive summer services and programs tailored to local needs and community perspectives. Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to: * Explain briefly the history of the Building Community- Based Summers (BCBS) project and its four key principles * Identify their library organization’s “why” of summer services * Name examples of strategies that other libraries have implemented to build greater community involvement into their summer services * Identify one or two action steps your library could take to help build more community voice into your summer services Feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions. Fine-tuning the Listserv Spam Filters
by Quick, Shauna (MDE) 30 Sep '26

30 Sep '26

Have you seen the "_______SPAM_____" in the subject line of Michlib-l posts recently? There has been an increase in bots searching, collecting, and submitting information on the internet and our filter for sending to the listserv is working overtime. There has been some finetuning of the spam filters on the listserv to help keep spam out and the "_______SPAM_____" in the subject is a result of that endeavor. This will get better as time goes on and fine-tuning the filtering lessens. As this get sorted, be mindful of clicking on links, documents, and double checking the sender email address before replying or replaying all. Thank you all for your patience and understanding as we navigate the new era of the internet! Happy Fall! Always, Shauna Quick Library Technology Access Consultant Library of Michigan, 702 W. Movie Licensing - Outside groups using our rooms
by Andrea Ingmire 30 Sep '26

30 Sep '26

Hi all, Wondering how you handle outside groups using your library room(s) for film screenings? We seem to have more groups who want to show a film/movie/documentary at the library. We've explained movie licensing requirements (and that they can't use our license), but many groups are confused by this... Just wondering how other libraries handle this situation. I'm not into policing this, but I do think it might be helpful to provide some kind of guide for groups wanting to do this. Questions we get include, but are not limited to: 1. If I'm showing this film to my membership group at our annual meeting (example: Lake Superior Art Association) - and it's not 'open to the public' do I still need permission? 2. Does this specific film need permission? 3. How do I get permission to show this film? 4. Why can't I show a film from Netflix, Disney or other streaming platform that I pay for personally... 5. Doesn't the library cover this for me? And a follow up question. If we tell people that this is required, and they don't do it. Are we liable for the performance rights infraction? We show a fair number of films, and I think this gives the public the impression that they can do this too! Happy Wednesday Everyone, I am curious what your library does to comply with the Michigan Library Privacy Act when your patrons want to share their account information with someone else. Currently, we have physical forms that patrons have to sign giving consent for a designated someone else to access their account. Are any of you doing a digital signature/form to allow access to patron accounts? Thanks for your insight. -Miriam [cid:f1798bca-cde4-4f1e-ae19-268ddbe67eb7] Miriam Andrus, MLS Director, Grace A. Beginning Oct. 2, 2026, employers and minors will use YEPP to complete the youth employment permit process through one statewide system. Local school districts and nonpublic schools will no longer issue youth employment permits. Important: YEPP is a new platform for managing youth employment permits. The launch does not change Michigan’s youth employment laws or requirements. All other youth employment laws remain unchanged. The new system will: * Allow minors and employers to complete the permit process online at any time of day, providing greater flexibility, particularly during the summer months when schools may have limited hours. * Require employers to register with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) before hiring minors. * Allow employers to notify LEO when a minor’s employment ends. * Provide LEO with greater visibility into youth employment across Michigan. * Create opportunities for LEO to proactively communicate youth worker rights and responsibilities directly to minors and employers.
