CSLP 2029 slogan/2030 theme Announcement
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 29 Sep '26

29 Sep '26

Hello! I have returned from the CSLP (Collaborative Summer Library Program) Annual Meeting, where we voted for the winning slogan for 2029 and theme for 2030! 2029 Slogan: "Curiosity Takes Root" (theme is Nature) really easy to add "at [Your Library]!" to take this slogan further. (On the poll I sent out this was the top slogan choice for Michigan with 35.6% of respondents.) 2030 Theme: Food and Cooking Food can be a challenging theme for some to grasp, but it has also been a popular theme suggestion for many, many years, and was the top vote-getter in Michigan this year (31.1% of poll responders), as well as at the national CSLP Listening Sessions. At the meeting, state reps and committee chairs had a lengthy discussion about the potential challenges with the "Food and Cooking" theme (the challenges for areas with food scarcity, prohibitions on food or cooking in some libraries, food allergies and food sensitivity concerns, etc.). After the discussion I have confidence that CSLP will be thoughtful and intentional about the slogan, artwork, and resource manuals while gathering library feedback about the best way to implement the theme. There will be many opportunities to provide feedback, and I am always happy to be a conduit for your thoughts and ideas to CSLP. I'd also like to take a moment to again encourage you all to get involved in CSLP if you'd like to have a say in the Collaborative Summer Library Program! You are all eligible to be on committees, and you can put your name in the hat for 2027 committees up until October 15th via this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSehZdr1d7obLwwFbYF5w7n4ndpGwEkpdgR… I am so thankful for all the Michiganders that have served on a CSLP committee this past year, your time and input is much appreciated. Other upcoming themes and slogans: 2027: Mysteries Await at Your Library (mystery/detective/suspense) ? Folks, this is going to be a good one! We'll have a reveal of the artwork on our Oct 13th MiYouth! 2028: Libraries are Legendary (mythical creatures) Watch for more "Mysteries Await!" planning opportunities for Summer 2027 coming soon! Seed Library Suggestions Needed!
by Jessica Bostian 29 Sep '26

29 Sep '26

Good afternoon Michigan Libraries! If your institution has/has had a seed library and have any suggestions, tips/tricks, warnings, rules/policies, etc. - would you be willing to send me your input? I am planning to have one at my DPL location next spring, and was curious if most libraries simply purchased their seeds outright, or if you solicited donations, amongst other things. Thank you in advance everyone! Happy Monday! CORRECTED YESA WEBINAR LINK AND INFO
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 28 Sep '26

28 Sep '26

Hello: Apologies for the incorrect link on the earlier message - below is the corrected link to the webinar last week. The Wage and Hour Division of the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) presented a webinar on Thursday September 25 to unveil the new Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP) , the online registration system that will be used to obtain work permits for workers and volunteers under the age of 18. Library directors and other hiring personnel are strongly urged to watch the webinar - https://youtu.be/qtgthYJMK5Q?si=gFq62Y-8jFC4HmEB The YEPP system is the result of the amendments to the Youth Employment Standards Act passed in 2024 that revised the work permit system to enable LEO to better enforce the youth labor laws. Public libraries that employ or engage volunteers under the age of 18 will have to register within the YEPP system. Minors will have to register and use the system to obtain work permits. Minors hired or added as volunteers on or after Oct 2, 2026, must use YEPP to obtain work permits. Libraries are strongly encouraged to consult their attorneys with questions concerning work permit requirements. MLA Book Club Returns! Read this email or I will be disappointed in you.
by Ryan Tackabury 28 Sep '26

28 Sep '26

Hi library world, I know it's Monday and that you, specifically, are a very busy, important person, so I will make this quick because I respect your time.* I want you to come discuss some books with me.* *What books? Great question.* -"Dearborn" by Ghassan Zeineddine. -"Let Them Lead: Unexpected Lessons in Leadership from America’s Worst High School Hockey Team" by John Bacon. *Why these books? Another Great question!* The authors of these books will be speaking at this year's Michigan Library Association Conference. I think it would be fun to become more familiar with these speaker's works before seeing them speak next month. *When and where?* Join us via Zoom on *Thursday, October 15 at 10am.* You can sign up here <https://us05web.zoom.us/meeting/register/qgFynuHhScCdlLoOA5CaCA>. If you are coming to the MLA Annual Conference in Novi this year, we will also have a book club meeting at the conference on *Wednesday, October 28th*, just in time to discuss these two books together before both Ghassan Zeineddine and John Bacon speak at the conference on Thursday. *Do I need to read both books?*No. But you can if you want. Read what you want, and we will discuss both. Or read neither, and let us convince you why you should read them anyway. *Yeah, why should I read these books?* "Let Them Lead" is really great - I devoured it over the weekend and I could not put it down. I know nothing about hockey, but I learned a lot about leadership, and I can't wait to talk about it with others. I am starting Dearborn today! I bet it is also going to be great! -- Ryan Tackabury Director Ruth Hughes Memorial District Library 211 North Almont Avenue Imlay City, MI 48444 (810) 721-2737 www.ruthhughes.org
