Mobile Escape Room - ISO
by Lorry Traver 24 Sep '26

24 Sep '26

Good morning, As many of you likely are, I have begun thinking of next year's summer reading programming and would like to have an escape room. However, after having put one together and run it, I have decided I never want to do that again because it is so time consuming. Does anyone know of a company that does the escape room for you, whether you need to provide the room for them, or they bring it in on a trailer. Thanks for the help! -- *“Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination, and the journey. There is a LEO webinar on this new process TODAY from 2:00-3:30 EST. The webinar will be recorded and posted on the LEO Wage and Hour website for those unable to attend today. Please see the NOTICE attached BELOW this e-mail to access the webinar. If your library hires or engages employees or volunteers under the age of 18, you are strongly encouraged to view the webinar today or as a recording. Thanks! Clare Clare D. Membiela, MLS, J.D. [LEO Banner] New Online Tool Coming Soon for Youth Employment Permits Join our webinar today Michigan is preparing to launch the new Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP), a centralized online system that will modernize the state’s youth employment permit process and make it more convenient and accessible for minors, families and employers. Beginning Oct. 2, 2026, employers and minors will use YEPP to complete the youth employment permit process through one statewide system. Local school districts and nonpublic schools will no longer issue youth employment permits. The new system will: * Allow minors and employers to complete the permit process online at any time of day, providing greater flexibility, particularly during the summer months when schools may have limited hours. * Require employers to register with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) before hiring minors. * Allow employers to notify LEO when a minor’s employment ends. * Provide LEO with greater visibility into youth employment across Michigan. * Create opportunities for LEO to proactively communicate youth worker rights and responsibilities directly to minors and employers. Live Webinar — Today, Sept. 24 To help employers, schools, families and other stakeholders prepare for the transition, LEO will host a Youth Employment Permit Portal webinar on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 2–3:30 p.m. The webinar will feature State Rep. Phil Skaggs, LEO leaders and representatives from the company that developed YEPP, who will provide an overview of the new system, discuss the transition and answer questions about the updated youth employment permit process. tween graphic novels in Korean and Vietnamese?
by Lise Mitchell 23 Sep '26

23 Sep '26

Hi, Got this question from a colleague at a school library -- wonder if anyone can assist. "We have two students who speak and read other languages: one Korean and one Vietnamese. I am trying to find a source for popular US book titles translated into those languages. Titles like any book by Raina Telegemier (Guts, Smile, Sisters, Drama, etc.), the Baby Sitters Club series in Graphic novel by Ann Martin, or any book or series that would be of high interest to 5th and 6th grade students. Do you happen to know any sources where I could buy titles like this? I have sources to buy books in Spanish and have those in our collection. That was relatively easy, but I have found only one source for books translated into Korean and so far none in Vietnamese." I unfortunately don't regularly buy books in either of these languages. I found a vendor for a few titles, but the prices are bit high ($65), but assume that is to be expected? as always, thanks in advance, lise -- Lise Mitchell, Library Director director(a)gladl.org 517-622-3550 Grand Ledge Area District Library 131 E. [Partnering Grant Opportunity] Fw: Announcing the $1M+ Unwritten Challenge: Learning and Critical Thinking in the Age of AI
by Quick, Shauna (MDE) 23 Sep '26

23 Sep '26

Hello! Consider partnering with a school or a local 501c3 to apply for the following grant opportunity from Young Futures! Unwritten Challenge: Learning and Critical Thinking in the Age of AI<https://youngfutures.org/challenges/unwritten?utm_source=substack&utm_mediu…>. From Young Futures announcment in the forwarded email below: We’re looking for organizations that are creating room for young people to think independently, equipping educators and trusted adults to guide that growth, and helping the public understand young people’s experiences through research and storytelling. That work might happen in a classroom, an after-school program, or a conversation between a caregiver and a teen. A potential grantee’s solution doesn’t have to use AI. It needs to help young people develop these capacities in a world increasingly shaped by it. At least 10 organizations will receive grants of $50,000 to $100,000, and selected leaders will join the Young Futures Academy, our five-month accelerator offering coaching, community, and practical support. Applications close October 16. We’re also hosting an applicant information session on September 29 at noon PT / 3 p.m. ET. What are we doing now to protect the experiences and relationships that help them become confident learners, think for themselves, and build the skills they’ll need throughout their lives? Making room for a young person to say, “Wait, let me figure it out” is part of that work. So is making sure they have someone to turn to when they get stuck. Maybe they’re working through a difficult assignment, or they’re explaining why they disagree with a friend and realizing they might need to rethink their stance. Maybe they’re trying something unfamiliar, getting frustrated, and deciding to give it another go. Those moments can look small from the outside. But with encouragement, conversation and room to try again, young people are building essential capabilities. They’re practicing judgment. and learning with others. We’re glad essential conversations about making AI safer are happening. In the meantime, young people need support to learn and grow. Investing in the relationships and opportunities that support their development is what we call developmental safety. It’s about their well-being today and the skills and confidence they’ll carry into adulthood. That’s the work Young Futures and our partners are taking on together. Today, we’re opening The Unwritten Challenge, a minimum of $1 million in funding for U.S.-based nonprofits helping young people ages 10 to 19 strengthen learning, critical thinking, and healthy decision-making. It’s the first of three funding challenges under Groundwork, our $15 million, three-year initiative across the United States and United Kingdom, to strengthen the human foundations young people need to thrive alongside AI. We’re looking for organizations that are creating room for young people to think independently, equipping educators and trusted adults to guide that growth, and helping the public understand young people’s experiences through research and storytelling. That work might happen in a classroom, an after-school program, or a conversation between a caregiver and a teen. A potential grantee’s solution doesn’t have to use AI. Their advice: ask teens to share their interests, involve them in family tech decisions and model the boundaries you want them to follow. The conversation offers practical ways to move beyond anxiety and build trust, while helping young people develop their own judgment around technology. Are we counting the wrong thing when it comes to screens? Research highlighted by the Stanford Center for Digital Health<https://substack.com/redirect/586e0815-09cc-4b63-ae20-29c1d5cb0ac4?j=eyJ1Ij…> suggests that time spent online alone may not tell us enough about the harms teens experience. Features like infinite scroll and autoplay deserve attention, too. For adults, that opens up a different conversation: What makes an app hard to put down? How do you feel after using it? Asking teens about those experiences can help us understand where they need support, while keeping responsibility for safer design on the platforms themselves. Spotlight on Youth Voices How are young people deciding when to trust AI? Google’s U.S. Future Report<https://substack.com/redirect/72d215f3-6357-459f-9cca-42daf03469cc?j=eyJ1Ij…> draws on a survey of more than 1,000 teens, alongside focus groups and digital journaling, to explore how they’re navigating these tools. Half of surveyed teens say they consistently evaluate AI-generated content for trustworthiness, and 55% cross-check facts against trusted sources. Their experiences offer a starting point for conversations about when AI supports their learning and where they need more guidance. They also remind us to ask young people how they’re making these decisions and give their answers a meaningful role in shaping that support.
