Calling all library staff in (or near) the Upper Peninsula! MCLS will be offering THREE in-person professional development opportunities next month in Michigan's U.P. We hope you can join us. Space is limited and registration closes on 10/6, so register today! Note: Superiorland Library Cooperative is hosting MCLS and would like to cover 50% of the cost of any of these three workshops for all members of SLC. Developing Positive Relationships at Work Dickinson County Library, Iron Mountain, MI Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Central (local) time We spend a large amount of time with our co-workers, and having constructive, positive relationships with those we work with benefits everyone. Tying in aspects of accountability and wellbeing, this interactive session will help participants develop relationships with co-workers that are supportive, constructive, encouraging, and free from negative drama or conflict. As a result, employees will have the tools to create a more harmonious work environment, be able to work through disagreements, find more team solidarity, and ultimately have more job satisfaction and better wellbeing. Dickinson County Library is bringing MCLS to Iron Mountain for part of their staff day and would like to open up the experience to other library staff. Individuals from any library may register for these open spots. DCL staff do NOT need to register. In our current society, everyday interactions can feel charged and volatile, and library staff too often feel unprepared and worried. The key to handling these situations is not to avoid them or hope they never happen, but to find methods of meeting each moment without losing resolve. In this practical and engaging hands-on workshop, library staff will learn techniques to be their best selves when nerve-wracking situations occur with patrons or coworkers and be better equipped to calmly handle daily upsets and find greater satisfaction in their work lives. We’ll discuss techniques for staying cool, calm, and empathetic and participants will have time to prepare and practice their responses to true-to-life scenarios. TWO sessions to choose from! Job Posting: Continuing Education Cataloging II Instructor Continuing Education and Professional Learning Services at the iSchool at UW-Madison is seeking an instructor for Cataloging II<https://ischool.wisc.edu/continuing-education/cataloging-ii/>, an advanced cataloging course for learners familiar with the concepts covered in Basics of Cataloging<https://ischool.wisc.edu/continuing-education/basic-of-cataloging/>. This is an asynchronous online continuing education course. The previous iteration of Cataloging II was 6 weeks, but we are looking to expand it to an 8 week course if possible. The instructor will begin teaching in the spring of 2027 - the course dates are somewhat flexible pending the instructor’s availability. The iSchool will provide training and technical support for the instructor. Familiarity with online teaching or learning is an asset, but not required. The iSchool uses Canvas as our learning management system. Ideal candidates: * At minimum, must hold a Bachelor’s degree; * Able to develop and teach the course during spring 2027 semester * Well-versed in the required content topics covered in the course (outlined below); * Legally authorized to work in the United States; * Experience with instruction is preferred, but not required. Required Content for Cataloging II * Reading and understanding MARC catalog records * Distinguishing between copy cataloging and original cataloging, and creating original catalog records using MARC formatting * Evaluating current standards and practices of cataloging by learning to think critically about the ethics of cataloging, classification, and metadata * Cataloging Library of Things and other unique materials * Understanding how technology like AI and linked data and recent legislation affect modern cataloging Salary: The instructor will receive up to $2,200 each time they teach the course. The instructor will receive an additional one-time development payment up to $880.
