Ready to Read Michigan update - MDE Literacy Hubs
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 05 Dec '22

05 Dec '22

Hello Early Literacy programmers! Just a quick note that it appears MDE shared the Ready to Read Michigan (RTRM) website<https://www.readytoreadmi.org/home> with training/resources specifically for public library staff out publicly in their most recent Literacy Support Network Hub Newsletter<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aWXfxQuiDAi-LPkO290zXR5w__sEQFhz/view?usp=…>. While it is nice to be recognized for our early literacy work, this might potentially create confusion for community partners. I've already had one library reach out confused why a local hospital was asking about it... So, just be aware that this is "out there," however do take advantage if anyone calls or wants to work with your library on "Ready to Read Michigan," that it is indeed an opportunity to promote your early literacy storytimes, programming, and supports within your community (no matter what you call it). And it's a chance to connect with local literacy hub partners if you've not already. Meanwhile, looking for training on RTRM? Don't forget we have the Ready to Read Storytime Tune-Up!<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/even…> webinar with Jenifer Strauss on 1/19/23. Registration is open. Michigan Minimum Wage information

This topic will be further discussed during the Director’s meeting on Friday. 😊 Thanks! Clare Clare D. Membiela, MLS, J.D. Postmaster General, 381 U.S. 301 From: Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity <LEO(a)govsubscriptions.michigan.gov> Sent: Monday, December 5, 2022 10:03 AM To: Membiela, Clare (MDE) <MembielaC(a)michigan.gov> Subject: RELEASE: Michigan's Minimum Wage Set to Increase on January 1, 2023 [LEO Banner] --- PRESS RELEASE --- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, Dec. 5, 2022 CONTACT: Erica Quealy<mailto:quealye@michigan.gov> <mailto:olsend1@michigan.gov>517-582-2961 Michigan's Minimum Wage Set to Increase on January 1, 2023 LANSING, Mich. – On January 1, 2023, Michigan's minimum wage rate will increase from $9.87 to $10.10 per hour as set by Michigan's Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.legis…> of 2018 establishing the annual schedule of increases. Effective January 1, 2023: * The minimum hourly wage will increase to $10.10 per hour. * The 85% rate for minors aged 16 and 17 will increase to $8.59 per hour. * The tipped employee rate of hourly pay increases to $3.84 per hour. * The training wage of $4.25 per hour for newly hired employees ages 16 to 19 for their first 90 days of employment remains unchanged. There is pending litigation that might affect this minimum wage increase: * In 2018, a petition initiative organized by One Fair Wage sought to allow voters to decide on raising Michigan’s minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2022 and raise the minimum wage for tipped workers to 80% of the standard minimum wage in 2022, 90% in 2023 and ultimately match it in 2024. * The Legislature adopted the legislation and then amended it in 2018, putting in lower wage thresholds that increased the minimum wage to $12.05 by 2030 instead of 2022 and kept the tipped minimum wage at 38% of the standard one. As a result, the state's current hourly minimum wage is $9.87 and $3.75 for workers who are expected to make up the difference in tips. * The Legislature’s amendment has been challenged in court as unconstitutional. On July 19, 2022, the Court of Claims issued a decision that agreed with that challenge and voided the amended versions of the Michigan Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act and Paid Medical Leave Act in favor of their original, unamended versions. * On July 29, 2022, the Court of Claims entered an order staying the effect of this decision until February 19, 2023, to give employers and the relevant state agencies time to accommodate the changes required by the ruling. * The Court of Claims’ ruling has been appealed. Pending final resolution of the appeal, and lifting of the stay, under the potential implementation of the originally adopted petition, the minimum wage rate for 2023 would be $13.03 and $11.73 for tipped employees. Hiring minors
by Sarah Skinner 02 Dec '22

02 Dec '22

Hello, Library Land! We are looking into hiring a high school kid as a page. He is only 15 and I am wondering how you all handle minors in the workplace? I downloaded the brochure from the Michigan Dept. of Labor and it seems like it's OK if they get a work permit from their school and are scheduled nights and weekends (i.e. outside of school hours). My question is this: do you currently have minors employed in your library? Is there anything else I need to know if we decide to hire this young man as a page? Thank you for your collective knowledge and advice! -- Kind regards, Sarah Skinner, Director (she/her) Bridgman Public Library 4460 Lake Street Bridgman, MI 49106 269-465-3363
