[MIHI Connecting MI Communities] >From the Chief Connectivity Officer [Eric Frederick]In our last email update, we shared the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) newly released National Broadband Map. Because high-speed internet is not available to nearly half a million homes in Michigan, we continue to urge every Michigander to check their home and business address on the preliminary broadband map to ensure it accurately reflects their level of internet access. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration will use the finalized maps to help determine future broadband expansion efforts and billions in grant funding to close the digital divide in communities across the country. Here's how to access the FCC broadband map: 1. Visit FCC broadband map here<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>, then type in an address and see if the reported coverage is accurate. You can access the site from a computer or a mobile device. 2. Residents can submit a challenge by clicking "Location Challenge" if the location of their home or business is missing or incorrect, or "Availability Challenge" if the internet service information is incorrect. 3. Residents should visit the website of any internet service provider that claims to serve their location and use the website's "Check Availability" or similar tool to determine if the provider can serve their location. 4. If they can't, a screenshot of their website can be submitted to the FCC as evidence for an Availability Challenge. The FCC also allows local governments, tribal governments and other stakeholders to file bulk challenges for multiple locations on behalf of their communities. To ensure an accurate map is used for funding decisions, all challenges must be submitted by January 13, 2023. The FCC Broadband Data Collection Help Center<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> has a wealth of information on the methodology and data contained on the map, including resources for those looking to challenge the map data. Consumers can follow the instructions on how to file an availability challenge using the new map here<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. Governmental entities can access the underlying broadband serviceable location fabric<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> that forms the foundation for the address locations on the map. Data can be downloaded here<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> for various geographies by speed for comparison. Our team is encouraging consumers, communities and any others with a stake in broadband availability to submit challenges to the FCC map if a discrepancy is found. Having an accurate federal map will ensure that Michigan receives its equitable share of funding through the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment Program to invest in achieving universal broadband availability for all Michiganders. Sincerely, Eric Frederick Chief Connectivity Officer Michigan High-Speed Internet Office Leo-mihighspeedinternet(a)michigan.gov<mailto:Leo-mihighspeedinternet@michigan.gov> ________________________________ Program Updates The MIHI Office is tasked with implementing three federally funded programs. These programs are described below. Stay tuned for more information as these programs are developed. ROBIN Program: In early 2022, Governor Whitmer and the Michigan Legislature passed the Building Michigan Together Plan, Public Act 53 of 2022. The plan includes the appropriation of $250.6 million in federal Capital Projects Fund resources to expand high-speed internet service to unserved locations in the state. On Oct. 7, the United States Treasury announced the approval of Michigan's plan for the use of these funds. View the ROBIN Fact Sheet to learn more<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. The MIHI Office plans to open the application window for the ROBIN Program the week of Jan. 9. Between now and Jan., MIHI will publish the draft program guidance for ROBIN along with a geospatial tool for applicants to identify potentially eligible locations for the program. Be on the lookout for additional communications regarding these two program updates. ________________________________ In the News Inside the effort to make Washtenaw County the 1st in Michigan with universal broadband<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> County board to host broadband work session<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> What Is the FCC's New Broadband Map and Why Does it Matter?<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> Tell FCC if they got something wrong<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> Broadband development nearly 2/3 complete in Manistee County<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> With grants becoming available, Branch County sends out RFP's for broadband project<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> Check out the FCC's broadband map, future expansion riding on it<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> ________________________________ Resources Join the Michigan Statewide Digital Inclusion Database<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. Book Material Restoration
by Leiann Day 01 Dec '22

01 Dec '22

Good Afternoon, What companies have you used for book material restoration? When we have water damage or flood we are normally at the mercy of an emergency response contractor. Have you used a company other than a disaster response company like ServPro or Belfor when your book materials are water logged? Thanks Leiann Day, MBA, CPPO Procurement Manager Detroit Public Library 313.269.2148

MeL Minute: K-8 Resources for Winter-Themed Instruction
by Ann Kaskinen 01 Dec '22

01 Dec '22

[A picture containing text, clipart, sign Description automatically generated]With the snowy season upon us, there is no better time to explore a variety of winter-related resources in the Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> (MeL) for students and teachers. The professional journals, eBook Collections, and encyclopedias in MeL provide some lesson ideas for teachers as well as resources that students can explore on their own. Blizzards & Snowflakes Two great video clips to get the snow flying are from Britannica School<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=eb>. One helps us understand how snow crystals form<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/assembly/view/227392>, and the other explains why snow crunches<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/assembly/view/193811> when we walk through it. Also from Britannica School are articles, images, and additional video clips to help students understand snow<https://school.eb.com/levels/middle/article/snow/277106>. Remember, Britannica offers leveled content. Although the article opens at the middle school level (2), it can be changed to elementary (1) or high school (3) reading levels as well. In the eBook K-8 Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> searching the keyword blizzard brings back a mixture of fiction and nonfiction titles<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…>, including a title for early learners: How to Survive a Blizzard<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…>. Keep in mind that eBooks from this collection (and several others) can be shared with multiple users on multiple devices simultaneously; there are no holds or wait times! Precipitation Matters<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…>, an article from Science & Children<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…>, a publication in Education Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, offers hands-on lesson ideas for examining snowflakes. Winter Solstice Understand the Differences between Solstices and Equinoxes<https://school.eb.com/levels/middle/assembly/view/248637> is an engaging, 3-minute, Britannica Demystified video clip. Also available through Britannica School is an article<https://school.eb.com/levels/middle/article/solstice/623562> that describes a solstice and includes an image. By setting limiters in NoveList K-8 Plus<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, book titles on winter solstice<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…> and other winter-related themes can easily be searched and reviewed. Hibernation To get the earliest learners thinking about animal behavior this winter, Science Spin K-1<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…> from Primary Search<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> has Ready, Set, Snooze! article and activity<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…> about groundhog behavior. The corresponding article<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…> from the Science Spin K-1 (Teacher’s Guide)<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…> can be found in Education Source. A keyword search of hibernation in the eBook K-8 Collection garners 14 results<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…>, including titles on bears, insects and frogs. Scholastic News (Edition 5/6)<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…> has a fun, yet informative article, Heavyweight Champ<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customlink/proxify/proxify.php?count=1&e…>, from Middle Search Plus<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> that describes the Alaskan Brown Bear packing on the pounds for winter. There is much to discover in the MeL eResources on various winter subject matter; this is only just the tip of the iceberg! If you are having any issues linking to items on this page, contact melerhelp(a)mcls.org<mailto:melerhelp@mcls.org> for help. Brought to you by Ann Kaskinen from the MeL Team.
