Dearborn Public Library Talk with William Cohan Regarding His New Book Power Failure
by Lodge, Daniel 26 Nov '22

26 Nov '22

Don't miss out on a unique opportunity! Be sure to join us on Wednesday, November 30th at 6:30pm for a Zoom virtual talk with New York Times Best Selling Author William D. Cohan. Mr. Cohan's new book POWER FAILURE: The Rise and Fall of an American Icon covers the dramatic rise-and unimaginable fall-of America's most iconic corporation by New York Times bestselling author and pre-eminent financial journalist William D. Cohan<https://williamcohan.com/about/>. No company embodied American ingenuity, innovation, and industrial power more spectacularly and more consistently than the General Electric Company. The company embodied both the muscle of American business- entrepreneurial drive, inventiveness, financial legerdemain- and its weaknesses- unchecked egos, grandiosity, hubris, and corruption. The story of GE's glorious rise and distressing fall is not just the story of a finance powerhouse. It's a cautionary tale about blind ambition and trying to live up continuously to a flawed corporate mythology. Fire at Oxford Public Library
by Bryan Cloutier 23 Nov '22

23 Nov '22

Colleagues: We had a fire at Oxford Public Library Tuesday evening. One of our rooftop units and insulation caught on fire and very quickly filled the building with smoke. I am extremely proud of my team who all acted quickly and got everyone out of the building safely. Our Fire Department is amazing and were able to isolate fire damage to exterior, but it goes without saying that the building will be closed indefinitely. Although the structure is sound, within about a minute and a half almost all of our 24,000 sq. ft. facility was completely consumed by smoke. The level of smoke damage is far more reaching than we first thought. We have started the mitigation process and are working with teams of people who, I am confident know what they are doing. These are the things they do not teach us in Library school, but when it happens everyone seems to pull together and gets the work done. I am very thankful that I was still in the building at the time of the incident and extremely grateful that I can send this note from my office at the library. Tangible items can be replaced, but people are priceless-and most importantly no one was hurt. To those of you who want to help-I know it's a lot to ask, but if you have any of our books on loan in your library and you can hold on to them right now, please do. We need some time to sort things out here. Also, to all of our neighbors, please welcome our residents into your libraries as though they are your own until we can do this ourselves. Rough estimates at this point are several weeks out before we can welcome the public back into our building. We are working through logistical and construction timelines as some ceilings will also need to be removed and replaced. The whole building is impacted, but Youth Services seems to have taken the brunt of it. We have also requested that TLN suspend delivery as to avoid additional smoke exposure. Regards, Bryan J. by Jennifer Dye 23 Nov '22

23 Nov '22

Sean Gavin, Associate Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Wayne State University, pulls back the curtain on one of the most energetic scientific disputes of the 19th century. How can Darwin's theory of evolution possibly be true when Lord Kelvin's state-of-the-art calculations of the age of the Sun and the Earth prove that there hadn't been enough time for life to evolve as Darwin had described? Tuesday, November 29 6:00-7:30 p.m. Please register: https://dpl-delusion-fusion.eventbrite.com [https://img.evbuc.com/https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.evbuc.com%2Fimages%2F337943189%2F13…]<https://dpl-delusion-fusion.eventbrite.com/> Delusion, Fusion, and The Age of the Sun<https://dpl-delusion-fusion.eventbrite.com/> How a collision between Darwin and Lord Kelvin (sort of) gave rise to modern cosmology. dpl-delusion-fusion.eventbrite.com Please join us next Tuesday.
