Try An Online Class!
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 27 Mar '20

27 Mar '20

Have you ever taken an online class? These differ from webinars as they require multiple sessions and can be either self-paced or instructor-driven. Online classes may also qualify for a Continuing Education Stipend<https://www.michigan.gov/cestipend>. Are you an ARSL<https://arsl.info/> member? ARSL members can apply for a Rural Library Course Fee Waiver<https://infopeople.org/content/rural-library-course-fee-waiver-form> for InfoPeople classes<https://infopeople.org/training/view/online>. Check out these online classes: Cultural Humility in Public Libraries: Colleagues & Customers<https://infopeople.org/civicrm/event/info?id=896&reset=1> (InfoPeople) Start: April 21st, 2020 12:00 PM End: May 4th, 2020 4:30 PM Cost: $200 Are you curious about the term cultural humility? At its root, cultural humility requires one to acknowledge inequality and take action. This online course will introduce the concept of cultural humility as a professional tool in the library. We will focus on your role as colleague and as a professional and will link the concepts of cultural humility to librarianship. We will explore personal identity and culture. We will also examine how culture and identity translate to a deliberate practice of cultural humility in the workplace. Growing Up Is Hard: Library "Adulting" Programs Can Make It Easier<https://infopeople.org/civicrm/event/info?id=897&reset=1> (InfoPeople) Start: May 5th, 2020 12:00 PM End: June 1st, 2020 4:30 PM Cost: $200 Have you ever heard or used the term "adulting"? It's used to describe those things that grown-ups need to do.... like creating a budget, cooking meals, and paying taxes. When faced with life pressures and need-to-know skills (from money management to workforce know-how to running a household), some emerging adults find that they simply have no idea how to tackle some of these life challenges. It's no coincidence that library programs that teach adulting skills are on the rise! Library of Congress Classification<https://libraryjuiceacademy.com/169-LCC.php> (Library Juice Academy) Dates: April 6th through May 3rd, 2020 Cost: $175 This course focuses on learning the structure and notational system of the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) system, using the free PDFs of LCC via the Library of Congress. LCC is an enumerative system that uses an alphanumerical notation system to express the subject content of information resources. The call numbers created are a combination of class numbers and cutter numbers, thus an integral part of building numbers involves understanding the role of cutter numbers and how they are constructed using the LC Cutter Number Generating Table. Students will become familiar with the structure of LCC and how numbers are devised through basic subject analysis technique. The notational system will be explored, including its expressiveness and hospitality and how notational elements are used. Call number building devices will be practiced, including basic cutter number construction, reserved cutter numbers, and successive cutter numbers, etc. Another integral part of LCC is its in-schedule instructions such as "Divide like" and "Under each" and the use of category lists and auxiliary Tables. Introduction to Digital Preservation<https://libraryjuiceacademy.com/183-digital-preservation.php> (Library Juice Academy) Dates: April 6th through May 3rd, 2020 Cost: $175 This course is designed to give the non-archivists, non-preservationist a basic overview of the field of digital preservation practice in libraries, archives and museums. On completion of this course, the student will have knowledge of the history of the field of digital preservation, best practices for establishing and maintaining digitization and digital preservation programs, ethics and social justice issues related to digital preservation practices, and an overview of international approaches to digital preservation work. Developing a Website Content Strategy<https://libraryjuiceacademy.com/049-content-strategy.php> (Library Juice Academy) Dates: April 6th through May 3rd, 2020 Cost: $175 In this four-week course, you will learn the process of developing a website content strategy, from the first phase of conducting an audit of your content, to the second phase of analyzing your current environment, to the final phase of establishing a sustainable strategy that will ensure your content is useful, usable, and findable. You will walk through each of these three phases and discuss how to adapt various types of approaches for implementation at your own institution. You will learn how to discover your unique content problems, present them to your organization, and subsequently establish new roles, responsibilities, and workflows for the entire lifecycle of your content. Notes from MiYouth virtual meeting 3.26.2020
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 26 Mar '20

26 Mar '20

Hello, Thank you so much to all who joined us this morning! We had about 120 participants and it was wonderful to hear from so many on the call. A few take-aways from the conversation: * Communities are craving routines and boredom busters, so post a schedule with content that might engage the whole family. * Think outside-the-box on how to reach out to those in your community that do not have virtual access. (Don't forget accessibility guidelines) * Teen engagement might be as simple as offering them a virtual chat or game room - lots of concern for teens in this time overall. * Less is more; families are very overwhelmed right now so share challenges and engaging activities that are not necessarily curriculum heavy. Links: MiYouth Brainstorming from 3.26.20<https://bit.ly/MiYouth_sharing> - This doc also includes a link to today's Zoom Chatbox for additional comments by those on the call. MiYouth Resources<http://bit.ly/MiYouthVirtual> (updated periodically by Cathy) We will continue to meet weekly at 10:00 AM ET on Wednesdays for the next few weeks.
