self-care in these times
by Reed, Nyama 30 Mar '20

30 Mar '20

Hello Everyone, I came across these two posts today and they dovetailed well together. We are all passionate about the library, that's why working there brings us so much joy. Being home bc of the COVID crisis is overlaying a lot of stress on our passions and joys (library and otherwise). Plus we've all had to cancel things and miss people which leads to grieving. Take the time to grieve the changes in your life right now, then find new passions and joys to help buoy you through this time. Have a wonderful day, Nyama Nyama Y. A Library 2.0 Mini-Conference: Small, Rural, and Independent Libraries
by Shannon White - Library of Michigan 30 Mar '20

30 Mar '20

The second Library 2.020 mini-conference: "Small, Rural, and Independent Libraries," will be held online (and for free) on Wednesday, June 17th, from 3pm to 6pm Eastern. This mini-conference will focus on innovation and innovative thinking in rural, independent, tribal, and other small libraries--as well as the many unique challenges that they face. A diverse array of keynote panelists and curated presenters will cover topics that will likely include: * Innovations to provide Internet access and training to rural patrons; * New ways that small libraries can offer services that the big urban libraries offer; * Taking community partnerships to the next level; * How workers from small and rural libraries can easily connect with each other to get ideas and keep innovating; * Novel ways to fund special programs; * Unique "Internet of Things" offers that are tailored to specific communities; * Safety, security, and ways to deal with emergencies when the sheriff's department is far away. This event is being organized in partnership with Jim Lynch from TechSoup for Libraries<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.techs…>, Kate Laughlin from the Association for Rural & Small Libraries<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Farsl.info…>, and The School of Information at San José State University<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fischool.sj…>. We invite you to join MCLS remote working staff Pam Seabolt and Lissa Krull for another dialogue and discussion around the virtual environment we find ourselves working in right now and what opportunities might exist for libraries as we move forward. Join us this week on Friday, April 3 at 11:00 EDT (10:00 am CDT) on Zoom https://zoom.us/j/172695113. Staff Reduction during COVID-19?
by Jaema Berman 30 Mar '20

30 Mar '20

Dear Colleagues, We understand that the COVID-19 crisis has the potential to last through the summer months. Is any library considering temporary staff layoffs? Are segments of your staff working from home? Has anyone created a policy for this kind of situation? Thanks for your consideration. Jaema Berman Library Director Addison Twp. Public Library 1400 Rochester Rd. Leonard, MI 48367 (248) 628-7180 www.addisontwp.michlibrary.org “A library outranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people. Remote access of databases
by Brian Johnston 30 Mar '20

30 Mar '20

Hello Everyone, One of the databases that we subscribe to in-house is temporarily offering remote access. They want to provide a link to use it, however, they've asked that the link be password or barcode protected. Do any other libraries have experience with this? If so, how did you do it? Thanks, Brian R. Johnston Adult Services Librarian Lincoln Township Public Library 2099 W. John Beers Road Stevensville, MI 49127 (269) 429-9575 bjohnston(a)lincolnlib.org

RBdigital Resources and Michigan Statewide Discounted Pricing: Final Reminder
by Jim Flury 30 Mar '20

30 Mar '20

Good Morning, I wanted to touch base with libraries one more time concerning the statewide discounted offer for the five RBdigital resources (magazines, soon to be expanded to 3,500 titles; 35,000+ unlimited audiobooks; 1,500 comics; 2,500+ newspapers; streaming video) Here is a link to a description for each of the five RBdigital products that are included in this discounted ricing offer: [ https://www.recordedbooks.com/our-products | https://www.recordedbooks.com/our-products ] Our standard contract year for these services with Recorded Books is May 1 through April 30. HOWEVER, in light of current events I have received many requests from libraries in recent weeks for an early, as in asap start (April 1) or for a "we would like to go live effective with our new fiscal year" start (July 1 usually). We, TLN and RB, have been glad to honor these requests for an early, a May 1, or a July 1 (or any other time, really) go live with any/all of these services. The deadline for libraries to commit to any/all of the five services included in the RBdigital Michigan statewide discounted pricing proposal is tomorrow, Tuesday, March 31. Even at this late hour we will do our best to accommodate any library that requests an April 1, 2020 go live with any/all of these services. Thank you for your support of the Michigan statewide discounted pricing RBdigital project. Please let me know if you have any questions. Sincerely, Jim Flury Jim Flury Technical Services Manager The Library Network 41365 Vincenti Court Novi, MI 48375 248-536-3100, ext 133 Fax 248-536-3098 jflury(a)tln.lib.mi.us
