Shout Out to Cadillac Wexford PL! - Great local resources for supporting their community during COVID-19
by Shannon White - Library of Michigan 31 Mar '20

31 Mar '20

I wanted to be sure and send a shout out highlighting the work being done by the Cadillac Wexford Public Libraries on maintaining local support resources for their community on the library website. As we know libraries are a trusted resource that community members look to for support, help and assistance during uncertain times. Just because you may be closed to the public your virtual services are still available. https://www.cadillaclibrary.org/covid-19-local-info-for-dealing-with-the-pa… Cadillac Wexford PL has really stepped up to the plate and not only provided links to relevant about their closure and circulation changes, but they are also maintaining links to help support their community members with information about food pantries, local testing, community donations, local school meals, meals for the general public, local shopping hours, and more. If you are also digging deep and using your library to communicate these local support networks and connections via your website and other communication channels, we would love for you to share. Cadillac Wexford was just one that I noticed early on getting this customized information out to the public. Kudos to Tracy Logan and the staff at Cadillac Wexford PL. We had about 120 participants and it was wonderful to hear from so many on the call. A few take-aways from the conversation: * Communities are craving routines and boredom busters, so post a schedule with content that might engage the whole family. * Think outside-the-box on how to reach out to those in your community that do not have virtual access. (Don’t forget accessibility guidelines) * Teen engagement might be as simple as offering them a virtual chat or game room – lots of concern for teens in this time overall. * Less is more; families are very overwhelmed right now so share challenges and engaging activities that are not necessarily curriculum heavy. Creating Pathways to Civil Legal Justice: Register now for WebJunction course beginning April 6
by Koscielniak, Kimberly (MDE) 31 Mar '20

31 Mar '20

Free Course: Creating Pathways to Civil Legal Justice<https://learn.webjunction.org/course/search.php?search=lsc471> for Library Staff is Now Enrolling Barriers to civil legal justice disproportionately affect low-income people in the U.S, creating the justice gap - the divide between the civil legal needs of low-income people and access to the resources to meet those needs. Public libraries are well-positioned to help reduce this gap. WebJunction is offering an online, instructor-led course that will strengthen library staff's knowledge and ability to help identify when there is a civil legal issue at play and to direct library users to relevant, helpful information and services. Presented in collaboration with the Legal Services Corporation, the course begins on April 6 and runs through May 8 (four hour-long sessions, recordings available the next day). This instructor-led, online-only course offers more in-depth continuing education opportunities on the role of libraries in improving access to civil legal justice for their communities. Register this week and learn more at https://oc.lc/civil-justice-course<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Foc.lc%2Fc…> Please share widely information on this free, online learning opportunity with other library staff to help improve access to civil legal justice in our communities. A note on COVID-19 from WebJunction: The impact of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak is wide-reaching and will continue to evolve. As patrons return to your libraries, some will be faced with issues related to repercussions of the outbreak, and many of those issues may have a civil legal component. This course will prepare you to respond to those needs and guide patrons toward resources and support. self-care in these times
by Reed, Nyama 30 Mar '20

Hello Everyone, I came across these two posts today and they dovetailed well together. We are all passionate about the library, that's why working there brings us so much joy. Being home bc of the COVID crisis is overlaying a lot of stress on our passions and joys (library and otherwise). Plus we've all had to cancel things and miss people which leads to grieving. Take the time to grieve the changes in your life right now, then find new passions and joys to help buoy you through this time. Have a wonderful day, Nyama Nyama Y.
