As we celebrate 5 years of MiALA and look towards the future of the organization, we will explore the ways academic libraries are initiating and managing change, not just redefining and reevaluating, but growing from a place that is grounded in our strengths and aligned with community needs. How do we continue what is working and critically examine and pivot from what is not? MiALA invites you and your colleagues to submit presentation proposals for the 5th annual conference to be held May 14-15, 2020 at Ferris State University. Participation from librarians, library staff, LIS students, and administrators from all types of academic libraries is encouraged. MiALA membership is not required to submit a proposal. Library Patron Access and the Law Online Course Instructor: Mary Minow Dates: November 4th through 29th, 2019 Credits: 1.5 CEUs or 15 PDHs Price: $175 http://libraryjuiceacademy.com/217-access-legal.php Library Patron Access and the Law is a practical course to help identify areas in which librarians can proactively take steps to ensure compliance with legal requirements. Libraries that are open to the public and libraries open only to a more specialized community must both ensure that their patrons have access to information while balancing safety and other needs of the library's community. Join Mary Minow in this 4-week course as she takes you through two topics of particular interest: (1) Patron behavior policies and (2) Access to information by patrons with disabilities. You will address an issue or problem in each area, and work through legal frameworks to see how to minimize risk and maximize access. By the end of the course, you will know how to identify problems in patron behavior policies and learn how to ensure that your library offers due process to aggrieved patrons. You will know the basic legal requirements for access by patrons with disabilities, at the federal level, and how to check your local laws for any additional requirements. You will be given the opportunity to discuss these topics as they apply to your library, and be given resources to continue your learning. Mary Minow is a library law consultant, who has consulted on behavior policies, disability access (legal issues), and related issues. She has an A.M.L.S. from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from Stanford University. She is currently working with Tomas Lipinski on the second edition of the Library's Legal Answer Book (ALA: 2003). Your input may help inform this updated book. This is an online class that is taught asynchronously, meaning that participants do the work on their own time as their schedules allow. The class does not meet together at any particular times, although the instructor may set up optional sychronous chat sessions. Instruction includes readings and assignments in one-week segments. Class participation is in an online forum environment. You can register for any of our courses through the first week of instruction (as long as the course is not full). The "Register" button on the website goes to our credit card payment gateway, which may be used with personal or institutional credit cards. (Be sure to use the appropriate billing address). Hello all, Last night we hosted reporter and author Karen Dybis. She gave a talk on her book The Witch of Delray: Rose Veres & Detroit's Infamous 1930s Murder Mystery. The talk checks off a lot of our community's favorite subjects: Michigan history, true crime and the idea of women behaving badly. I arranged to have this program intentionally near Halloween in light of the book's title. We had great attendance for the program. Miss Dybis was very engaging, balancing the facts of the case with humor and insight. People left the event thanking me for having her. I definitely recommend you host Miss Dybis yourself. If The Witch of Delray doesn't peak your patrons' interest, she's written three other books, all having to do with Michigan history. Content and condition The titles listed are extra copies of fiction and non-fiction (hard and soft cover) books submitted to the Michigan Notable Books program over the last year and either contain Michigan content and/or were written by a Michigan author. Also available are some used Michigan government documents and other miscellaneous titles. How to request Please submit requests by email (respond to this message). If you are local or passing through, you are welcome to schedule a time to select and claim materials on-site from 8am-5pm, Mon.-Fri. That’s the question that Richland Library in Columbia, S.C., grappled with in 2017. Recognizing that there was no single answer, they launched initiatives on multiple internal and external fronts. Starting with a Social Awareness Taskforce, geared toward community engagement and courageous conversations, they explored topics surrounding social and criminal justice, women’s rights and race. By using innovative approaches like Circles of Dialogue and mobile empathy labs, nearly 1,500 people have participated in the library’s race, equity and inclusion programming. To further their efforts, they have also focused internally, empowering staff to lead the charge to understand their biases, macroaggressions, and cultural competence through Let’s Talk gatherings, Check Your Bubble worksheets, and other effective tools. Hearing how Richland Library moved the needle on honest dialogue, empathy, and equity with their staff and community, you will be inspired to dig in and do the work at your own library.
