This story is going to run in the Detroit Free Press, most likely in the first week of October. I'd love to hear about what libraries are doing and why -- how are they helping patrons solve problems or figure out how to get things done during the past six months? For example, the Berkley Public Library is helping patrons with 10 pages of free printing and the Baldwin library is helping with free online tutoring. Surveying Patrons on Hours

Hi Everyone, (Pre-COVID-19) Is there anyone that has previously surveyed their patrons about their hours of operation? My board is thinking about adjusting library operation hours. Current thought is just a slight shift: opening 30min earlier 4-5 days out of the week, and close at 8pm instead of 9pm Mon-Thu. Then someone threw out there that years ago one tax-paying patron bemoaned that we are closed on Sundays. Instead of speculating, the board would like me to survey our patrons to get feedback about what hours/days they would like to see us open. I'm looking for guidance on how to best do that. Are there parameters that should be decided first by the board? Do we share those parameters with the patrons at this level, or not yet? Should we leave it blank to see what they say? What would be helpful questions to ask our patrons instead of asking for a blank schedule? (For context, our library reopened June 8th at full operational hours. My board is looking at this putting COVID-19 considerations aside.) Thank you for your help! This work was informed by the work and expert guidance of ULC's Digital Equity action team<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.urban…>, this document spotlights how the pandemic has both intensified the digital divide and created a window for action by raising the visibility of what it means to be unconnected in our hyper-connected world, especially for our most vulnerable residents. Included in the Leadership Brief are action strategies, key messages and background information to empower library leaders to take on a more active and intentional role in advancing digital equity. Summary - "This Leadership Brief spotlights the urgent need for a new approach to making sure everyone, regardless of income, can participate fully in digital life in the pandemic era and beyond. Professional Development Escape Rooms from the Ground Up: In-person, outreach, and digital versions<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flibraryof…> Tuesday, October 6 2:00 PM ET - Library of Michigan Join us as two escape-room-loving librarians walk you through what you need to have for escape rooms at your library. We'll cover how to build in-person rooms for families and groups, how to take an escape room to schools, and how to build a digital escape room for community engagement. In the process, we'll consider budgets and staffing needs for libraries of all shapes and sizes. The webinar link will be emailed to registered attendees the day before the event. Foundations of digital literacy virtual workshop for Michigan library staff

Foundations of Digital Literacy is a new virtual training offered by MCLS in partnership with the Library of Michigan. This workshop is designed to help library staff gain confidence in everyday interactions with technology and is intended for participants who would like a basic introduction to digital literacy topics. Registration is open and filling fast! This workshop is being offered multiple times in October to accommodate smaller participation limits in each session, which will allow for plenty of personal attention and lots of interactive small group activities.
