2020/2021 LM Improving Access to Information Grants announced!

The Library of Michigan is pleased to announce ten Improving Access to Information grants for the 2020/2021 fiscal year. The Improving Access to Information grant program is intended to help Michigan's public and academic libraries provide improved access to collections in one of three areas; literacy, local history or special collections; and services to community users with limited online access, e.g. improving equity through digital inclusion. LM received 23 applications and is funding the following 10 libraries. Alpena County Library, Central Michigan University, Ferris State University and Presque Isle District Library received grants for local history or special collections digitization or support. Capital Area District Library, Menominee County Library, Taylor Community Library and Warren Public Library were awarded grants for digital inclusion or digital literacy. Traverse Area District Library received an award for regional STEM education collection support and Walsh College of Accountancy and Business Administration received an award for Open Educational Resources. Viewers of the author conversations video series can explore the backgrounds of the authors on the 2020 Michigan Notable Book list, as well as uncover their creative processes, and hear readings from book selections. "This innovative new series makes for a great expansion of our popular annual notable books list," State Librarian Randy Riley said. "The series gives more exposure to the books and authors on the list and helps promote literacy and learning." He said the series will become a fixture of future years' programs. Featured 2020 author conversations titles include: The Girls: An All-American Town, a Predatory Doctor, and the Untold Story of the Gymnasts Who Brought Him Down by Abigail Pesta; Camera Hunter: George Shiras III and the Birth of Wildlife Photography by James H. McCommons; Shades: Detroit Love Stories by Esperanza Cintrón; We Hope for Better Things by Erin Bartels; and All Manner of Things by Susie Finkbeiner. Tim Gleisner from the Library of Michigan's special collections has read all of this year's notable book selections and interviewed several of the authors. He said some authors read passages from their works, a couple opted to give their own presentations, and State Librarian Riley enthusiastically interviewed Dean Kuipers, who wrote The Deer Camp: A Memoir of a Father, A Family, and the Land That Healed Them. "They were so engaging," Gleisner said of the authors. "What I found so amazing was that several of them are educators from universities to high schools." The series includes 12 authors now, with five more author interviews being added in the coming weeks. Every year, the LM selects up to 20 notable books either written by a Michigan resident or about Michigan or the Great Lakes. The selected titles are honored in the year after their publication or copyright date. The celebration of the state's literary heritage, with roots stretching back to 1991, features the Night for Notables and the annual grant-funded authors' tour of libraries statewide. Open to non-residents of Westland: Infant Massage Classes at the Westland Public Library Announcing a FREE 2-part series of Infant Massage Classes on Monday, October 5 & October 12, 7-8 pm. The series will be offered live, via Zoom and is presented by a certified Infant Massage educator in cooperation with Starfish Family Services. This is being offered for pre-crawling infants and their caregivers. Expectant parents are welcome to join as well. Parents will learn gentle and loving ways to comfort, relieve gas, deepen sleep, and stimulate brain development in their infants. EO 2020-181 - Amendment to Safe Start Order EO 2020-176- Change for Regions 6 & 8!

Hello: EO 2020-176 has been amended by EO 2020-181 to again include Regions 6 & 8 (The UP and the upper Mitten) within the restriction of 10 and under attendance for Social Gatherings and Organized Events: "1. Subsection (d) is added to Section 8 of the Safe Start order (Executive Order 2020- 176), providing: "In Regions 6 and 8, an indoor social gathering or indoor organized event among persons not part of the same household is permitted provided that the gathering or event does not exceed 10 people and complies with https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-539530--,00.htmlt… social distancing requirement of subsection 6(a)(1) of this order." https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-539530--,00.html Therefore, the entire state - ALL Public Libraries- must limit in-person gatherings of people from the same household for social gatherings and organized events.
