Thursday, September 17, 2020. Kalamazoo Public Library is honored to welcome Sandra Farag, our new Head of Youth Services! Sandra most recently served as the Manager of Collection Development for Youth at Ingram Library Services in LaVergne, TN. She also has worked at BookOps-Brooklyn & New York Public Library, and the New York Public Library, Mid-Manhattan Branch where she served as a Supervising Librarian and a Senior Librarian respectively. In addition to her work experience, Sandra has also served on multiple award committees, and presented and/or moderated events at the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting, the American Library Association Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table, the Young Adult Library Services Association Symposium, Bank Street College, School Library Journal Day of Dialog, KidLitTV, and BookCon NYC. Sandra earned her Master Library Sciences (MLS) and Children's and Young Adult Services in the Public Library Certificate, City University of New York (CUNY), Queens College Bachelor of Arts in Child and Adolescent Psychology, CUNY, Baruch College. As KPL’s Head of Youth Services, Sandra will serve an important role providing management and direction for the operation and personnel of the Youth Services Department that includes Children’s Room, Teen Services, and Youth Outreach Services. Sandra’s leadership and vision for the future will be critical to the success of the Youth Services Department and an integral part of KPL fulfilling their strategic plan going forward. “We’re thrilled to have Sandra leading the way for Youth Services at KPL,” said KPL Director Ryan Wieber. “She brings a wealth of public library experience, is an expert in children’s and young adult literature, and she’ll do a great job maintaining KPL’s excellence in youth services while also adapting to future community needs.” Sandra recently moved to Kalamazoo from Tennessee. She has a passion for equity, diversity, and inclusion and tries to include them in every part of her life and career. Sandra’s favorite book is Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series. Join tomorrow for a continuation of the "What is a Library if the Building is Closed?" series from Gigabit Libraries. This round focuses on Libraries in Recovery. On Friday, September 18, at 11am Eastern you can hear from an all-star panel with internet "co-father", Vint Cerf; IMLS Director, Crosby Kemper; and University of South Carolina's David Lankes to help us begin longer term thinking and planning for libraries in months and even years ahead. Recent Scientific American article<https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/bad-news-about-the-pandemic-were…> predicts that, "it might be not until 2023-2024 when we get a sufficiently safe and effective vaccine." More predictable is the need to prepare for waves of restrictions and loosenings for the long haul. How to plan for that kind of operating environment? Well, the libraries are open. It's just the buildings that are mostly closed. But what does that mean going forward and for how long? Tomorrow's powerhouse panel with Vint, Crosby & David will help us anticipate what might be ahead for libraries as we kick off Round Three in the series as: Libraries in Recovery. What form will library services, if not library spaces, take in the years ahead? While also taking into account an array of potential if not probable disruptions like increasingly severe and more frequent extreme weather events due to climate change. What new skills will be expected of librarians themselves? Greater ICT expertise seems one safe bet. Our current era of digital transformation was already rapidly accelerating before the virus struck. Now the pandemic has put that phenomenon into overdrive. What will that mean for whatever the "next normal" may look like? The shift from libraries as a 3rd place to becoming more aset of virtual services has taken hold. Designing new dedicated special function library spaces has been driving library design for over a decade. Now what? What impact on a now intolerable digital divide? "Public libraries will always adapt to and reflect the communities they serve," -Marian Morgan-Bindon, city librarian for Gold Coast, Australia. Assists with the overall maintenance and orderliness of the Library’s collections, display areas, and department areas. 4. Hello all, The Adrian District Library is interested in starting a books by mail service to better serve our community during *gestures broadly* everything that's happening right now. Our questions: 1. How have you implemented this service, either now or historically? Do you only ship books/audiobooks, or do you allow other materials to circ? 2. Do you require your patrons to certify their disability, and if so, why? 3. Do you use cloth or plastic reusable mailers? 4. Where did you get those mailers? Please respond off-list! This is incorrect, as it SHOULD read "people NOT from the same households." Here is a corrected version of the information: EO 2020-176 has been amended by EO 2020-181 to again include Regions 6 & 8 (The UP and the upper Mitten) within the restriction of 10 and under attendance for Social Gatherings and Organized Events: "1.
