The importance of diverse classroom libraries from the educator perspective. 2. The importance of diverse classroom libraries with respect to student outcomes. MeL Minute: Highlight Community Art and Architecture with MeL
by Laura Warren-Gross 21 Dec '23

21 Dec '23

[A white letter on a blue green and red background Description automatically generated]December is Art and Architecture month. Michigan is full of opportunities to enjoy art—from excellent museums and formal events such as Art Prize in Grand Rapids to art hops, walks, and shows at local libraries. Recently, I visited Brandon Township Public Library<https://www.brandonlibrary.org/> and Bridgman Public Library<https://bridgmanlibrary.com/>, both of which have dedicated showcases for local artists to display their work. Kalamazoo Public Library hosts a monthly Tiny Reference Desk Concert<https://www.kpl.gov/event/tiny-reference-desk-concert/> which is similar to NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert<https://www.npr.org/series/tiny-desk-concerts/> series. For libraries that are looking to promote creative outlets to their patrons, the Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> (MeL) includes Art & Architecture Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, an eResource with publications to support creative vocations and passions throughout the community. Professional Journals Those who have careers in arts and architecture will appreciate the studies and research included in professional journals such as the American Journal of Arts Management<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> and Design Principles & Practices: An International Journal: Annual Review<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>. One interesting study<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> is about how Walt Disney’s focus on his guests’ experience is like current User Experience (UX) design principles. Trade Publications For people who like to keep up with trends and current art and architecture news, there are plenty of trade publications. Animation<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> covers all aspects of the industry and has a monthly Animation Planner<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> that lists upcoming events and releases of interest. People who dream of building the perfect home will enjoy the articles and features in Architectural Record<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> such as the HOUSE of the Month<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>. Magazines For library staff involved in collection development, 3X3: The Magazine of Contemporary Illustration<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>, American Craft<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>, and Art in America<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> each feature monthly reviews of art-focused books. Piecework<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>, a publication about knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and sewing has patterns that are sure to be useful to Michigan artisans and might be great additions to programming lineups or grab and go kits. There are also practical articles such as locations to purchase art supplies and enjoy art in Detroit<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> in American Craft<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>, information about current exhibitions<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> in Ornament<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>, and examples of community art such as an Indiana mosaic artist crafting parts of a skate park<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> in Stained Glass Quarterly<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>. Everyone can enjoy art—either as a creator or appreciator or even both. Libraries can use Art & Architecture Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> from MeL<https://mel.org/welcome> to inspire events such as local architecture walks and tiny art shows which are sure to be popular with patrons of all ages. Large Lamination Options
by Anna Merritt 20 Dec '23

20 Dec '23

Hello, Our library is in the market for a new laminator. The current one we own does up to a poster board size (22" x 28") and replacements for this size machine are $2,000+. Interested to see if there are cheaper options and how they work so... Does your library use a less expensive laminator that works well? An alternative option? If your library doesn't use a large laminator at all, how do you go about covering large signs when you need to? Any feedback would be appreciated. Happy Holidays!
