Use it, share it, and let's help Michigan students maximize their post-secondary opportunities! Smokey Bear Reading Challenge The USDA Forest Service, in collaboration with the Georgia Public Library Service, is excited to announce the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge in celebration of Smokey Bear's 80th Birthday in 2024! They're collaborating with public library systems across the country for this year-long challenge. This challenge is meant to complement CSLP's "Adventure Begins at Your Library," and is designed to be a fun and easy way to engage children in reading about wildfire prevention, forests, and natural resource careers, while exploring their local environment. Celebrate Smokey's 80th Birthday by joining the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge. Public libraries are invited to run the challenge for those 4 to 10 years of age, from January 1st to November 28th, 2024. We are asking Michigan library systems sign-up under 1 point of contact, using this form: https://forms.gle/wmwhc8ZubCEQy2VN9 Important things to note: * CSLP "Adventure Begins at Your Library" - The Collaborative Summer Library Program is partnering with the US Forest Services and these themes will tie nicely together! (If you attended CSLP's Summer Symposium<https://www.cslpreads.org/summer-symposium/> last week, you may have heard about this! Session recordings should be available soon, FYI.) * READsquared - I am working with US Forest Services and R2 to try get this in as a pre-made challenge. You can also use the art from the toolkit to make your own challenge. Beanstack is also apparently offering this as a challenge, too. * Reporting - In Dec 2024 I will be asking all libraries who signed-up to complete a survey that includes the number of your participants & their zip codes, so be sure to track that information. * Toolkit -You can download and print these materials in-house or send to a printer: https://smokeybear.com/library-toolkit-reading-challenge. * Note: No alterations or variations should be made to graphics or promotional materials. * This toolkit includes poster, bookmarks, sticker/button, reading log, and numerous incentives and marketing materials. zv667 Bed Bugs Update (Good news!)
by Brandon Richards 15 Dec '23

15 Dec '23

Good afternoon! As many of you are receiving materials from us again, I've received some questions, so I figured I should update everybody so there's no confusion. Last week pest control swept the building with a canine friend trained to sniff them out. The only hit we had was in our external materials return area, which is apparently very common. We didn't find anything live, but the dog is able to detect dead bugs and even their waste. That area was fully treated by pest control as a precaution. No other hits were found in the building. So the incident appears to have been isolated, and we've been given a clean bill of health! Thank you for your patience while we investigated this and a big thank you to the many of you who shared your knowledge! -- Brandon Richards Technology Coordinator/Trainer Houghton Lake Public Library 4431 W Houghton Lake Dr Houghton Lake, MI 48629 989.366.9230

WebJunction content and upcoming webinars
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 13 Dec '23

13 Dec '23

WebJunction content and upcoming webinars - December 13, 2023 Highlighted Content Programs that Walk the Talk<https://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/programs-that-walk-the-talk.ht…>: Throughout the Climate Action series, we have discussed strategies and practical steps libraries can take toward sustainability, as well as resources to support these efforts. The Sustainable Libraries Initiative can help support a balanced approach to facilities management, policymaking, collections, partnerships, and library services and programs. The Sustainable Libraries Initiative has identified four key characteristics of a “Sustainable Library”: * Strong and authentic institutions that live their values out loud * Catalysts for social cohesion and civic participation in communities * Deliberate action on climate mitigation (the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions) * Active participants in climate adaptation (strengthening community resilience) As libraries strive to manifest these characteristics through the programming offered by the library, there are three phases of work to consider through this lens: Design, Implementation, and Evaluation. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Leading Staff Learning<https://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/DEI-informed-staff-learning.ht…>: In our work to support library learning, we’re committed to an approach which looks to create and sustain diverse, equitable, inclusive spaces where libraries and communities can thrive. The OCLC 2023 Annual Report<https://www.oclc.org/en/annual-report/2023/home.html> features some of our most popular webinars from the past year that can help inform your library’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). We’re also continuing to develop resources and programming in this area to support library staff as we all continue on our respective journeys toward a more equitable and inclusive society. Centering Community VOICE<https://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/centering-community-voice.html>: Are you looking to deepen or expand your library’s outreach services for children and families from underserved communities, or would you like to build your library’s outreach efforts but don’t know where to begin? Have you been looking for ways to incorporate social justice principles into your outreach efforts? Would you like strategies for how to thoughtfully and compassionately provide outreach in communities whose identities and values are different from yours? Then we have the right course for you! Centering Community VOICE<https://learn.webjunction.org/course/view.php?id=613> includes in-depth, approachable content that guides you through a value-focused, outcomes-based process for developing, delivering, and assessing outreach programs for children and families from underserved groups. The self-paced course is designed for library staff at all levels who are interested in providing outreach services for children and families. Advancing IDEAs: Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, 5 December 2023<https://hangingtogether.org/advancing-ideas-inclusion-diversity-equity-acce…>: This is the latest Hanging Together blog post, part of a regular series<https://hangingtogether.org/tag/IDEA/> on issues of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility, compiled by a team of OCLC contributors. WebJunction Webinars These upcoming webinars are open for registration. If you can’t attend a live session, all WebJunction webinars are recorded and available for free in the Course Catalog<https://learn.webjunction.org/>. Libraries Foster Social Connection: Responding to the Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation Thursday, January 4, 2024 ◆ 3:00 pm Eastern / 12:00 pm Pacific ◆ 60 minutes Registration: https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/libraries-foster-social-conn… Libraries can play a vital role in building social cohesion and promoting community resilience, especially in challenging times. The Surgeon General’s 2023 Advisory on Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation<https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2023/05/03/new-surgeon-general-advisory-rais…> brings even greater urgency to the need for us to connect. This engaging session will explore ways to intentionally design for social connection in library services and programs, from passive to hosted. These innovative and practical strategies can deepen engagement with staff, trustees, local officials, volunteers, and community members of all ages and backgrounds. Through the lens of "social connector," we will explore how libraries can invite the community in with intention, build relationships that enhance social infrastructure, put community at the center of the library, and demonstrate the library’s impact. Building Authentic Relationships with Underserved Communities Tuesday, January 30, 2024 ◆ 2:00 pm Eastern / 11:00 am Pacific ◆ 60 minutes Registration: https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/building-authentic-relations… You know your library could do more to connect with and respond to the systematically excluded communities you serve. But if you're starting with little or no existing connection, how do you build authentic, trust-based relationships? How do you go beyond transactional interactions and guessing at services to effective engagement and participation? This webinar will help you develop a plan for identifying, reaching, and building relationships with communities experiencing oppression. As a result of this webinar, you will be able to: * Articulate the connection between relationship-building and equity, diversity, inclusion and social justice (EDISJ) in library services * Create, maintain, and utilize a simple asset map to understand your community's ecosystem * Apply the principles of asset-based community development to your own projects Switching it Up! Creating a Video Game Collection for Your Library Thursday, February 22, 2024 ◆ 3:00 pm Eastern / 12:00 pm Pacific ◆ 60 minutes Registration: https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/video-game-collection.html Video games are a dynamic, modern, popular medium worthy of a place in every library, but starting a collection can feel overwhelming. You might have questions like, how much funding will it require? Are these materials more prone to theft? Is this a juvenile collection, young adult, or one for all ages? This webinar will provide you with practical solutions for all your questions. We’ll walk through the process of creating, maintaining, and promoting a new video game collection. You’ll hear lessons learned and tips for success that Billings Public Library used to create a successful collection, along with strategies from other libraries around the country. You’ll leave ready to get started creating what is sure to be one of your library’s most well-circulating collections.
