LM's Library Science Collection - Literacies in the Library
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 07 Dec '23

07 Dec '23

Facilitating literacy is a core value and function for libraries. But what is literacy? Libraries focus on reading literacy with lapsit programming and summer reading, but we also provide support for literacy needs like English as a Second Language, digital literacy, media literacy and financial literacy. What programming options are out there for this broad perspective on literacy? LM is highlighting topical Library Science titles from our collection in occasional emails. Here are selected titles on literacy programming and services purchased recently. You can search MeLCat for LM titles and you can also check our New Library Science Collection titles at https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/libraries/libsci. Click on the ANSWER catalog link and use "Library Science Collection" as one of the search terms in the Advanced Search - Notes field and you will pull only the library science collection titles. Literacy Programming & Services titles: * Teaching information literacy reframed : 50+ framework-based exercises for creating information-literate learners / Joanna M. Burkhardt / Neal-Schuman, 2016. * Power lines : connecting with teens in urban communities through media literacy / Jimmeka Anderson and Kelly Czarnecki / ALA Editions, 2022. * Impactful community-based literacy projects / Lesley S. J. Farmer / ALA Editions, 2021. * Gather 'round the table : food literacy programs, resources, and ideas for libraries / Hillary Dodge / ALA Editions, 2020. * Navigating fake news, alternative facts, and misinformation in a post-truth world / Kimiz Dalkir, Rebecca Katz / Information Science Reference, 2020. * Rainy day ready : financial literacy programs and tools / edited by Melanie Welch and Patrick Hogan / ALA Editions, 2020. * Mother Goose on the Loose : updated / Betsy Diamant-Cohen / ALA Editions, 2019. * Partnering with parents : boosting literacy for all ages / Mary Schreiber / Libraries Unlimited, 2019. * Teaching media literacy / Belinha S. De Abreu / Neal-Schuman, 2019. REMINDER: Titles are available through interlibrary loan only right now, as our MeLCat delivery is temporarily offline while we prepare to move to a new catalog. You can find the information on interlibrary loan borrowing from the Library of Michigan here - https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/about/libuseguidelines/guideforl…. The page references state employees, but libraries may also borrow from the collection through interlibrary loan. Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues getting a title. The Library Science Collection at LM is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Have a title you'd like us to purchase? Let me know! Figuring Non-Resident Fees
by Erin Schmandt 07 Dec '23

07 Dec '23

A couple of years ago, someone at LoM gave us a handout with two formulas for computing a fair non-resident fee based on the taxes your patrons pay. I used to have it in a certain spot and of course, when I want to refer to it, it is not there. Does anyone have a copy handy to send me? Erin Erin N. MeL Minute: Current Events in Focus: Hamas, Gaza Strip, Israel, Palestine
by Ann Kaskinen 07 Dec '23

07 Dec '23

[A white letter on a blue green and red background Description automatically generated]On October 7, Hamas-led militants launched an assault on Israel from the Gaza Strip. Like many world affairs, this has opened discussions, disagreements, and a wide range of emotions here in the United States. It has also, undoubtedly, raised many questions both in our personal lives and those we share with middle and high school students. Like other current events that have a long history of conflict, the Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> (MeL) offers several eResources<https://mel.org/az.php> to help learners better understand and further consider the actions that we’re witnessing today. Britannica School To gain summary information related to topics such as Gaza Strip<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/article/Gaza-Strip/36255>, Hamas<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/article/Hamas/2732>, Hezbollah<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/article/Hezbollah/384132>, Israel<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/article/Israel/106444>, or Palestine<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/article/Palestine/108522>, Britannica School<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=eb> gives straight-forward, encyclopedic content. As students discover the details about the geographic region, culture, changes in leadership, political affiliations, and pivotal events, they can dig deeper with embedded, linked content to people and place names such as Benjamin Netanyahu<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/article/Benjamin-Netanyahu/2840>, Kaled Meshaal<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/article/Khaled-Meshaal/603641> and Plain of Sharon<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/article/Plain-of-Sharon/67160>. Primary Source documents that correlate to the article, like the Hamas Covenant 1988<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/additionalcontent/primarysources?id=16144…>, can be found under the tab, Related. eBook Collections There are hundreds of eBooks in MeL that offer varying perspectives of historic events in this region. From the eBook High School Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> and translated from the original Hebrew work, Erased from Space and Consciousness: Israel and the Depopulated Villages of 1948<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>, offers an aftermath perspective of Arab-Israel War of 1948. Other books in this collection include On Palestine<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> and The Origins of Israel, 1882-1948: A Documentary History<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>. The eBook Academic Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> provides several titles related to the United States involvement through the years. These include Our American Israel: The Story of an Entangled Alliance<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>, The Movement and the Middle East: How the Arab-Israeli Conflict Divided the American Left<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>, and Israel, the United States, and the War Against Hamas, July-August 2014: The Special Relationship under Scrutiny<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>. Viewpoints and Jewish Studies Source Highlighted in the featured content, both Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=ov…> and Points of View Reference Center<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> provide thousands of news stories on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict in audio and video from sources such as BBC, NPR, The Washington Post Videos, and NYTimes.com Video Collection. Additionally, both resources have hundreds of point/counterpoint perspectives for students to consider. Finally, Jewish Studies Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, which offers “a multidisciplinary view of the study of the Jewish civilization from its historical origins to the present,” includes publications such as Jerusalem Viewpoints<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> and Journal of Holy Land and Palestine Studies<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>.
