Program recommendation: The CCC in Michigan
by David Stokes 10 May '24

10 May '24

Hey folks, Last night we hosted Hillary Pine (Northern Lower Peninsula Historian for the DNR & Michigan History Center) at our library for the program: *An Outdoor Army: The CCC in Michigan*. It was well-attended, despite the weather, and Hillary is both very knowledgeable about her topic, and a really good presenter to boot. Fascinating foray into this Great Depression-era program that transformed Michigan’s landscape in ways that can still be seen today. Incidentally, the Higgins Lake Nursery & CCC Museum is a MAP participant-- and it makes for a great day trip, too! David M. Stokes Adult Services Librarian Adult Services Dept. VOIP Phone Systems
by Tracy Logan 10 May '24

10 May '24

Hello Great Brain! We want to upgrade from our old analog phone system to a new voip system. There are a lot of factors to consider. Would you, please, answer a few questions about your own voip systems? 1. Do you have a phone system that is easy to use and affordable? What is it and who is the provider? 2. How do you handle it when the internet goes down and your phones are likewise not available? 3. Are there any features to your system that are innovative and essential? Anything you think everybody would be thrilled to have? 4. Are there any concerns that I should be aware of? Any gotcha's you have dealt with? Thank you for your time and replies! -Tracy -- Tracy Logan Library Director Cadillac Wexford Public Library 411 S. Lake Street Cadillac, MI 49601 231-775-6541 logant(a)cadillaclibrary.org

Opioid Crisis Support Kit for Public Libraries - WebJunction
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 10 May '24

10 May '24

The opioid epidemic was declared a national public health emergency in 2017, and the situation worsened due to the 2020 COVID pandemic. Provisional data from the CDC National Health Statistics Center<https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/drug-overdose-data.htm> show that from September 2020 to September 2023, opioid overdose deaths in the US increased by 19%, from 88,879 to 105,303. As community anchor institutions, public libraries are leveraging their assets in response to this crisis. To aid staff at public libraries in determining how their library can address opioid use disorder in their community, WebJunction has developed the "Opioid Crisis Support Kit for Public Libraries<https://www.webjunction.org/content/dam/WebJunction/Documents/webJunction/o…>." This resource will help strengthen libraries-and, more broadly, the communities they serve-as the nation continues to struggle with the opioid crisis. The Support Kit<https://www.webjunction.org/explore-topics/opioid-crisis.html> was tested by staff in 15 public libraries across the US and enhanced by their feedback. The content includes pragmatic strategies, tools, and other resources to help libraries-including those in rural areas-as they determine their specific communities' needs and define the roles and activities their library is most suited to carry out. The kit will help libraries assess their staff strengths and capacity, identify key partners with whom to collaborate or coordinate, and plan and implement programming and services that support local needs. Upcoming webinar Join WebJunction on May 16, 2024, for a free webinar<https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/opioid-crisis-support-kit.ht…> (3:00 pm ET) to learn more about the Support Kit, how it was created, and how to use it. You'll also hear from library staff who participated in the early testing and who were able to implement new programs to meet local needs. This program is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Thank you, Cathy Lancaster Youth Services Coordinator Library of Michigan 702 W. Professional Development Hours Question
by Jesse Cornea 09 May '24

09 May '24

Hello everyone. Resending this. The Brandon Township Public Library is reviewing its professional development criteria and wondered how other libraries collect their professional development hours. We have just a few questions for anyone who doesn’t mind answering: 1. Do you have a target amount of hours staff are expected to complete? Is this collected quarterly or yearly? 2. What counts for hours? Do you count committee meetings, webinars, or conferences? 3. How are staff encouraged to complete this work? Is time set aside to complete professional development? Is it expected to be completed outside of work? Thank you for your time! We can collect this information for any interested parties and send it back out in a week or so! *Jesse Cornea* Library Associate Brandon Twp Public Library 304 South Street Ortonville MI 48462 248-627-1461 *ENGAGE • EDUCATE • ENRICH • EMPOWER*

For those of you who may do podcasts for your library, how do you find the experience? Is it a pain to come up with content on a regular basis? We have debated starting a library podcast but worry about how sustainable it would be long term. Any tips/tricks/thoughts, etc?
