PGCMLS serves approximately 955,300 residents from 19 branch locations with a $38 million budget and 312 FTE, roughly 85% of whom are members of UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO. Approximately 72% of its budget comes from the county and 23% from the Maryland State government. In FY 2022, PGCMLS had 578,405 active borrowers, 98,391 people attending 5,160 free programs, and circulated 3 million items, ranking it among the highest circulating libraries in Maryland. Solar Eclipse: First of two coming Saturday, Oct 14, 2023

SEAL: Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries<https://www.starnetlibraries.org/about/our-projects/solar-eclipse-activitie…> As we get closer to the Annular Eclipse on Oct. 14, more and more librarians are getting ready to distribute the send-home handouts about this eclipse, which are pages 28 and 29 of the booklet that goes with the glasses. (See: http://bit.ly/eclipsesforlibraries<https://www.starnetlibraries.org/2020/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/SEAL-bookl…> ) That same handout in Spanish is on pp. 32 & 33. Note that before you duplicate that page, you are supposed to fill in the times of the eclipse in your location. You can find that by going to this website and putting in the name of your town: https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/solar/2023-october-14 Where it says "eclipse maximum" you may want to put in not just the time, but the % of the Sun's diameter that will be covered by the Moon, which the website gives you as the eclipse magnitude. So, if they say the magnitude is 0.479, that means just about 48% of the Sun's diameter will be covered up. Total Solar Eclipse coming on Monday, April 8, 2024. Michigan will see it at 90% totality! So, if you are giving out glasses in October, remind folks to store them safely and avoid scratching or bending, so they will be reusable in April. Encourage families to share a pair of glasses, as the eclipses last long enough to pass a pair around. NOTE ABOUT SELLING FREE GLASSES: By the rules established by the Moore Foundation, libraries may not sell the glasses they receive through this project. However, many libraries are likely to find that the local demand for glasses far outstrips their free supply, especially if they get word out via the local media. In that case, libraries can try to order more glasses at bulk rates and then sell them for a reasonable fee (such as $2 or 3 each.) Profits could go to your Friends of the Library or similar group. For your free glasses, we recommend only providing them during eclipse programs, like those described above, to make sure the supply lasts. This project is funded by generous support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation through Grant Agreement 10756 to the Space Science Institute. Additional funding has been provided by NASA Science Mission Directorate through a supplement to the NASA@ My Library program. Hello Everyone, Due to the upcoming retirement of our longtime youth services librarian, Cathy Chesher, we have an opening for the following position: *AVAILABLE POSITION:* Youth Services Librarian *WORK SCHEDULE: * 40 hours per week, including evening and weekend hours *PAY RATE:* Starting wage is $24.95 per hour, commensurate with experience; benefits include health insurance, paid vacation and sick leave, paid holidays *JOB SUMMARY:* The person in this position plans and executes services and programs for the Youth Services and Teen Services Departments of the public library, including materials selection, reference and readers advisory services, programming, outreach, and any other library-related work as required. They oversee development of the library’s youth and teen collections, including reference materials and electronic collections. Additionally, they provide service to the public required at the library’s service desks. They occasionally act as Librarian in Charge (LIC) in the absence of the library director and assistant director. Canva share for Banned Books Week

Hi all, I know it's pretty late in the day now but... I created 11 features of individual challenged or banned book titles for Banned Books Week in the Instagram story format that we are going to use next week, and wanted to share with you (you can simultaneously use this for Facebook stories and schedule them at the same time in Business Suite's Content Planning area if you like). I used a free header from ALA's website - the "Let Freedom Read" graphic. Our posts were admin approved ahead of time, so make sure to check-in with yours before you post, just in case.
