Looking for 1950's-era book
by Helena Hayes 16 May '24

16 May '24

Good morning! I am on a mission to find a book that a patron thinks is from the 1950's (she would have read it in the mid to late 50's). Here is her description... "... it was an old children's paper type book. It is about trying to capture a dragon with colored stings, or the dragon shot out colored strings. The dragon started out mean, not sure if it became nice or not. It was not a Golden book. Had ships and sea; Asian people." Thank you in advance for any suggestions or recommendations of where to look. Please reply off-list. 🙂 Helena Helena Hayes, MLIS Director Galesburg Charleston Memorial District Library 188 E. MeL Minute: Innovation Everywhere!
by Wood-Gramza, Heather (MDE) 16 May '24

[cid:a39ebba8-9827-4bc8-b9a1-caaf9a13499b] Innovation Everywhere! Generative AI<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> is a hot discussion topic these days. While artificial intelligence isn’t new, ChatGPT, Gemini, and other publicly available artificial intelligence tools are emerging as the latest in a long line of disrupters. Disrupters aren’t necessarily negative. In fact, I’m very grateful to be able to write this post on a laptop computer instead of a typewriter! Smart phones, microwave ovens, personal computers, electricity, broadband internet, indoor plumbing, and more have changed our lives in significant ways. These innovations are in existence because people worked diligently to solve problems they and others faced in everyday life. The Michigan eLibrary (MeL)<http://www.mel.org/> has myriad resources highlighting the lives of innovators as well as information for those who have entrepreneurial dreams of their own. As summer approaches, feed your curiosity about those who have made this warm season extra special. Biography Reference Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> features brief articles on over 450,000 individuals including the inventor of summer backyard fun, Lonnie Johnson <https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> and Ron Toomer<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>, creator of summer amusement park thrills. Road trips, a summer tradition for many, are much safer due to the ingenuity of Mary Anderson and Florence Lawrence<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>. I cannot imagine driving down the road without windshield wipers or turn and brake signals. For those pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams, MeL<http://www.mel.org/> has valuable resources without the paywall. Small Business Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> provides state specific start up information<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> as well as eBooks from NOLO press such as the Legal Guide for Starting & Running a Small Business<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>, Patent, Copyright & Trademark<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>, and How to Write a Business Plan<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>. AtoZdatabases<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=at…> provides demographic and existing business information for those conducting market research and developing business plans. EBSCO’s eBook Business Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…> contains indispensable titles for aspiring entrepreneurs such as 6 Essentials to Start & Succeed in Your Own Business: What Top Entrepreneurs Know, That Others Don’t<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> and Business in the 21<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>st<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…> Century: A Sustainable Approach<https://auth.mel.org/newera/check-direct?url=https://widgets.ebscohost.com/…>. Whether satisfying your curiosity about your super soaker’s origin story, feeling the wind whip through your hair while courageously riding the latest and greatest steel roller coaster, or finally deciding to take the plunge and beginning your own business adventure, MeL<http://mel.org/> has resources to make your summer season unforgettable! Quirky (aka: non-traditional) bookclubs that work for your communities?
by Andrea Ingmire 15 May '24

15 May '24

Hi all, I'm curious what kind of bookclubs work for your Library patrons? Specifically, I'm interested in those that are non-traditional... I've heard some libraires have success with silent book clubs where folks just gather and read silently... We have a very successful bookclub focused around food/cooking titles. Also interested in hearing creative ways to reduce staff effort. Do you have a trusted volunteer that helps to select, read, facilitate the bookclub(s)? What works for your library patrons?? Thanks! Unusual Book Groups
by Barbara Beaton 15 May '24

15 May '24

Okay, not actually about unusual books, though maybe. We are playing with the idea of having a book/reading group where people would just come for coffee/treats and to discuss whatever they have been reading. So not the usual everyone reads the same book and meets to discuss it, but a way to share and generate enthusiasm for books/reading in general. Has anyone had any experience with this type of gathering? Did it work/not work? What factors contributed to its success or lack thereof? Happy to compile responses offline and share with anyone else interested. Thanks! Advocacy Hour conversations are always free to attend but registration is required. Weiss Financial Ratings Database
by Kari Besancon 14 May '24

14 May '24

Good Afternoon Everyone, Does anyone have a subscription to the Weiss Financial Ratings database? I just had a demo with a representative and really liked it. She claimed that there was a huge interest with Michigan libraries and I would like to make sure she is being truthful about this fact, plus she never did give us a quote... but I really did like this database, and want to know your thoughts. Any input would be very helpful. Thank you! -- Kari Besancon (Bə-sank’-in), MLIS District Director Iosco-Arenac District Library zv323 989-362-2651 k.besancon(a)vlc.lib.mi.us
