2014 Community Reads Announced the The Neighborhood Library Association
by Karen Fehl 15 Aug '14

15 Aug '14

The Neighborhood Library Association (NLA) is pleased to announce the selection of their fifth annual Community Reads book, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, by New York Times bestselling author Karen Joy Fowler. In this curious, wonderfully intelligent novel, Fowler brings to life a most unusual American middle-class family, ordinary in every way but one. Each of the five libraries that comprise the NLA will host book discussions and book-related events. The 2014 Community Reads program begins today and runs through November 18, culminating in an author visit on November 18 at Novi Public Library. Participating libraries are: Lyon Township Public Library, Northville District Library, Novi Public Library, Salem-South Lyon District Library and Wixom Public Library. Fowler’s book is a tale of loving but fallible people whose well-intentioned actions lead to heartbreaking consequences. The madcap plot and fresh diction add humor to a story about experimental psychology, human development, and animal rights. It is worth the trouble to avoid spoilers, and let the author introduce the troubled Cooke family before she springs the jaw-dropping surprise at the heart of the story. Programs include: Humane Animal Education with the Detroit Zoological Society: Dangers of Exotic Animals as Pets on Saturday, September 20 at 2 pm at Salem-South Lyon District Library; Our Closest Relatives: Understanding Primate Behavior and Ecology on Tuesday, October 7 at 6:30 pm at Lyon Township Public Library; Journaling to Reduce Stress on Wednesday, October 29 at 6:30 pm at Wixom Public Library; Healing Vets & Saving Pets on Thursday, October 30 at 7 pm at Northville District Library; Leader Dogs: Helpers, Guides, and Friends on Tuesday, November 11 at 7 pm at Novi Public Library; and Meet the Author: Karen Joy Fowler on Tuesday, November 18 at 7 pm at Novi Public Library. Registration is required for the author visit and may be required for the other events. Contact each library for details. Please visit the NLA website for complete details at: http://mynla.info Thank you for your interest! Gnod
by Dave Ewick 15 Aug '14

Hello Everyone, I just discovered an interesting website that is "an experiment in the field of artificial intelligence..." according to the website itself. For books, it takes three of your favorite authors and shows you several similar types of authors. It does the same thing with movies and music. I found it pretty cool and thought it might help with patrons who want something similar to what they like but don't know authors. It's fast and fun! Website: www.gnod.com Just thought I'd share! The IMLS National Leadership Grants for Libraries program invests $12 million annually in projects that improve professional library and archive practice with implications far beyond the grantee institutions. The grants help drive innovation and support projects with national impact. This year, IMLS is adding an additional opportunity to apply for FY 2015 National Leadership Grants for Libraries. IMLS will be accepting applications in October and again in February. For the October deadline we are implementing some changes that will allow the agency to address strategic issues identified in a series of IMLS Focus meetings that were held earlier this year. To make it possible for IMLS to provide feedback to potential applicants before they prepare full proposals, we will be accepting brief preliminary proposals on October 13, 2014 and inviting selected applicants to submit full proposals. Invited full proposals will be due on January 15, 2015. Applicants interested in learning more may participate in our webinars on August 20, at 3:00 PM ET, and (repeated) on September 16, at 3:00 PM ET. For more information about the webinars, see the IMLS Webinar webpage<http://www.idevmail.net/link.aspx?l=2&d=73&mid=363882&m=2242>. Last spring, agency leadership traveled to New York, San Francisco and Chicago to convene IMLS Focus<http://www.idevmail.net/link.aspx?l=3&d=73&mid=363882&m=2242>, a series of nationally webcasted meetings to explore library trends and opportunities. These interactive events spotlighted the importance of strong libraries to benefit all Americans by providing opportunities for lifelong learning, anchors for community engagement, and access to content. Hundreds of library professionals and representatives of library organizations participated in these meetings nationwide, online and in person, for a rich discussion that captured input to help IMLS focus its approach to supporting innovation in the nation’s libraries. The October 13, 2014, deadline for NLG libraries will focus on the three strategic priorities that were explored in these meetings. * National digital platform, which focuses on key needs, gaps, opportunities, and goals to consider in furthering national digital initiatives * Learning spaces in libraries, which focuses on emerging learning models that can deepen community engagement in libraries, particularly through learning labs, makerspaces, and digital commons * STEM learning in libraries, which focuses on learning for all types of users, with an emphasis on models or practices that serve at-risk youth Timeline at a Glance for October Deadline NLG NLG Libraries: October 13, 2014 Deadline Dates NOFO released August 13, 2014 Preliminary proposals due October 13, 2014 Notification of invitations TBD Full proposal due from invited applicants January 15, 2015 Notification of final decisions Not later than March 15, 2015 Project start date May 1, 2015 For the February deadline, we will not require preliminary proposals. Wine Tasting?
by Ann Perrigo 13 Aug '14

13 Aug '14

Surely this has been discussed before, but I'm having trouble getting into the archives... Has any library had a wine-tasting event? In this case the "tasters" would have to pay a fee. It would be the Friends sponsoring this, rather than the library, and here the Friends are a 501(c)3. If someone could even point me to the pertinent Mich. Law, it would be helpful. Thanks!
