The Grosse Pointe Public Library recently hosted a excellent program on two local memoirs that attracted a large crowd and we want to pass the word. Border Crossings: Coming of Age in the Czech Resistance Charles Novacek was recruited into the Czech resistance at the age of eleven, and his harrowing memoir of resistance, capture and escape has been beautifully edited and published posthumously by his widow, Sandra Novacek. Many may know Sandy from her former position as Director of the Cromaine Library. Through the Eyes of Rose John Kozak was seven years old when he escaped with his mother and older sister from oppressive Communist rule in Czechoslovakia. He has poignantly recounted the stories and bravery of his mother Rose during and after World War II in Through the Eyes of Rose. Benchmarking Help Needed

Looking for some statistical information from Class VI "city-run" libraries. City administration has asked me to provide statistics on the percentage of Dearborn residents that have library cards. That's fairly easy and we gather that information each fiscal year. However, they want me to benchmark against other Class VI libraries. If you find time in your busy day (and keep this kind of statistic), could you let me know how many of your active library cardholders are residents. We defined "active" as a patron who has renewed their card within the last three years. Currently, just over 31% of our residents have library cards. The vehicle was donated by Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center located in Superior Township and the Ann Arbor Automotive dealership in Scio Township. The donated vehicle replaces an aging van owned by the library. Mark Torigian of the Hyundai-Kia Technical Center and Dave Overlander of Ann Arbor Automotive visited the Ypsilanti District Library on December 6 to personally turn over the car keys. They also surprised library staff with an announcement of the donation of an additional $1,000 to cover gas and other associated expenses. In addition to delivering books, movies, and other library materials to YDL's three branches, the new car will also be used to make regular deliveries of large-print book collections to local senior residences and personal visits to homebound residents. MI Virtual Reference Conference: Call for Proposals Michigan Virtual Reference Conference Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Research Help Now VR Cooperative April 25, 2014 Eastern Michigan University Library Ypsilanti, Michigan Proposals due : Fri day, December 6, 2013 The Michigan Virtual Reference Conference is a one-time, one-day conference exploring all aspects of virtual reference services in libraries. The conference is being held in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Michigan Research Help Now Collaborative, and is co-sponsored by Research Help Now and the Eastern Michigan University Library. Share your ideas about or expertise in virtual reference by submitting session proposals to be considered for presentation. Proposals should be on a topic related to virtual reference, including chat, email, SMS, or other ways to provide research advice to remote students. Suggested topics include but are not limited to: * techniques for successful VR interactions * assessment of VR effectiveness or user satisfaction * exploration of VR technologies * outreach and marketing of VR * comparison of different VR modes * VR best practices and service quality * usability and user perspectives on VR * instruction and student learning in VR * using VR to connect with specific student populations * VR staffing and training * VR innovations and solutions to common problems * other topics related to providing research advice to students remotely Proposal Details Proposals are submitted online and will be judged in a blind review process by a committee composed of librarians from universities, four-year colleges, and community colleges. Conference slides, papers, and/or supplementary materials will be published on Eastern Michigan University’s Digital Commons online repository. Authors retain copyright and may also publish in other venues. Two types of proposals are solicited: presentations and lightning talks. Presentations: Presentations on virtual reference topics may be lecture format, interactive discussion, speaker panels (up to 4 speakers), or hands-on sessions in computer labs. The time frame for presentations is 50 minutes, including time for questions. Lightning Talks: Short presentations on innovative virtual reference topics that can be quickly shared within 10 minutes. These may be slide presentations or very brief interactive discussions. Conference organizers may group lightning talks together to form a session.
