Summer Reading manual ideas for 2015

The Collaborative Summer Library Program committees are beginning to work on the 2015 manuals and are looking for great ideas and suggestions. The manuals now include four sections: Early Literacy, Children, Teen and Adult. We are looking for your best program ideas for all four. The theme for 2015 is Heroes. Please take a minute to go to the survey and let us know what you are looking for in the Heroes Summer Reading manual. Rochelle Riley Brunch ~ 2013 Bookwoman Award

The Women’s National Book Association Detroit Chapter is proud to announce the winner of the 2013 Bookwoman Award, given bi-annually since 1991, to honor women in the book world who have made significant contributions to libraries, reading, writing, or publishing. The winner of this year’s award is Rochelle Riley. Rochelle Riley has won numerous awards, including the 2013 National Headliner Award and the 2013 Distinguished Leadership in Media award. She is a past winner of the Will Rogers Humanitarian Award and the Neal Shine Award for Media Commitment to Philanthropy. She is a four-time winner of the Michigan Associated Press Editorial Association Award, a two-time winner of a first place Salute to Excellence Award from the National Association of Black Journalists, and her columns covering the city’s corruption scandal were included in the entry that won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting. The Detroit Chapter of the Women’s National Book Association is honored to bestow the 2013 Bookwoman Award to Rochelle Riley. Presentation of the Bookwoman Award will be a brunch held on Saturday, September 28th at BRAVO Cucina Italiana, 17700 Haggerty Road, Livonia MI 48152, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.. We have had a coupon box for many years, first at one of our smaller branches, and now at the Main branch, since the smaller branches closed. We have a Disability Network volunteer who comes in twice a week to clip and file the coupons by subject in the box. This makes it a little more difficult for someone to grab them all, although there have been occasions recently where that happened. Our volunteer comes in on Wednesdays and Fridays, so that is when we get the lines. We moved the box to the Reference desk, so patrons have to come and ask for it and return it to the librarian when finished. This seems to be working to keep patrons from emptying it. amazon/Overdrive

According to the amazon techies, there is a nationwide problem with Overdrive downloads for all public libraries through amazon. There is no solution at this time but they hope to have it figured out, possibly, today. It has been going on all weekend, so I imagine today will be interesting with LOTS of Overdrive questions. Hello all-- I received many responses to my request for information about the composition of library board committees. Though I do attend all of the committee meetings as the staff rep, agenda creator and minute taker, other staff members have attended as well and that is creating some problems. As staff membership is not included in the board by-laws, I'll request that we follow those by-laws and see what happens.
