Apologies for cross posting; a reminder about this research grant opportunity. – JRC Carroll Preston Baber Research Grant Call for Proposals Do you have a project that is just waiting for the right funding? Are you thinking about ways that libraries can improve services to users? The American Library Association (ALA) gives an annual grant for those conducting research that will lead to the improvement of services to users. The Carroll Preston Baber Research Grant is given to one or more librarians or library educators who will conduct innovative research that could lead to an improvement in services to any specified group of people. The grant, up to $3,000, will be given to a proposed project that aims to answer a question of vital importance to the library community that is national in scope. Among the review panel criteria are: * The research problem is clearly defined, with a specific question or questions that can be answered by collecting data. The applicant(s) clearly describe a strategy for data collection whose methods are appropriate to the research question(s). A review of the literature, methodologies, etc. is not considered research (e.g., methodology review rather than application of a methodology) for purposes of the award, except where the literature review is the primary method of collecting data. * The research question focuses on benefits to library users and should be applied and have practical value as opposed to theoretical. * The applicant(s) demonstrate ability to undertake and successfully complete the project. The application provides evidence that sufficient time and resources have been allocated to the effort. Appropriate institutional commitment to the project has been secured. Any ALA member may apply, and the Jury would welcome projects that involve both a practicing librarian and a researcher. Deadline is January 8, 2014 . Ypsilanti District Library Job Posting: Librarian II 1.0 FTE DATE: December 17, 2013 POSITION: Librarian II 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week) Adult Services (YDL-Michigan Avenue) NATURE OF WORK: Under the direction of the Branch Head, the Librarian II provides public information services to adults in a variety of settings. Such services include reader's advisory, reference in print and electronic formats, computer assistance, and programming. Participates in collection development and maintenance within departmental guidelines. Contributes to the YDL website. Other responsibilities may include assignment to subject or service specialty areas. Temporary assignments in other departments or at any YDL location may also be made to meet the changing needs of the library and to adequately cover the public service areas of the library. QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited library school. Enthusiastic, friendly, positive public service orientation. Excellent oral and written communication skills. High level technology and Internet expertise. Must be eligible for certification according to the Library of Michigan personnel standards. Previous public library experience desirable. TIME/HOURS: 40 hours per week. YDL provides library services seven days per week. Schedule includes regular evening and weekend hours, including Sundays. SALARY/BENEFITS: Salary range: $37,997 - $49,584 (Per Current YDL-AFSCME Contract) Full benefits package offered includes family medical, dental, and optical insurance; generous paid leave including twelve paid holidays, plus life and disability insurance. Barcode location number

Hi, Bath Township has just started offering library services to its community and I am trying to get things up and running here. I am stumped on barcodes for patron library cards. After the 2 that starts a lot of library card numbers in Michigan is a 4 digit location code. Can anyone who went through an automation tell me how they got that number? Did you just pick one? The program reminds us that we all have the ability to make a difference. As individuals, we can choose to take action and participate in the world around us. Together, we can shape the future. 8. In just 2 minutes it teaches five key lessons about being a team player and winning as a team. It will lift the mood and help you develop commitment to peak performance, both within individuals and throughout teams. 9. Dave, I only know what I just now read by following your link below, but it looks pretty interesting. Would love for you to share your findings after you attend the meeting. Thinking about implementing Office 365 for staff here at FPL (looks beneficial), wondering how we would deal with patron computers. Right now, we license all our Microsoft through the Academic Volume Licensing program and pay an annual subscription. We put the same version of everything on both staff and public computers. The features of Office 365 don't seem to be needed and might be an impairment on a shared public computer...I'd be interested in whether the people pushing 365 have thought about that issue for libraries/schools. Keeping stats on reference questions

I am doing a survey on how libraries handle reference desk statistics. Could you please tell me how your library handles them? If you do keep them, do you differentiate between directional questions versus computer assistance versus an in depth reference question? I would really appreciate learning if there are other ways to measure this or if you think it is necessary to measure it at all. I know some may do more in depth surveys a certain number of times a year. If you do keep stats, how often are they done? Is anyone using Microsoft Office 365 for Non-Profits? We have been approached by a patron who is a PMP with Microsoft and is promoting it as a way to reduce our tech costs.
