Michigan Libraries for Life

Please see below about the statewide campaign for organ donations. Karren Reish Library Grants Coordinator Library of Michigan 517-241-0021 reishk(a)michigan.gov<mailto:reishk@michigan.gov> ------------------------------------------ Please excuse any cross-postings. You are Invited to Join 2015 Michigan Libraries for Life! Click here<https://sites.google.com/site/michiganlibraries4life/2015-invitation> to view this invitation online. [smalllogo-01(1) (1).png] If you could save a life, would you? Most people would say “Yes!” without hesitation. One of the simplest ways to save and improve lives is by supporting organ, tissue and eye donation. Since 2010, libraries across Michigan have participated in a simple and effective campaign to educate patrons about donation and transplantation, and to give them an opportunity to join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry<http://bit.ly/ML4Life>. The campaign is called Michigan Libraries for Life<http://www.librariesforlife.org/>. This effort, which began with the University of Michigan’s Taubman Health Sciences Library<http://www.lib.umich.edu/thl>, has expanded to include public, academic, special, and hospital libraries across the state. This collaborative effort has inspired more than 2,450 people to sign up as donors! “We’ve received great feedback from library staff,” said Richard Pietroski, Gift of Life Michigan’s CEO. “They appreciate having an easy yet meaningful way to engage their patrons in saving and improving lives. Michigan Libraries for Life gives hope to the 3,400 Michigan patients waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.” More than 95% of Americans<http://organdonor.gov/dtcp/nationalsurveyorgandonation.pdf> support organ, tissue and eye donation. Yet in Michigan only 50% of adults have joined the state’s donor registry. That discrepancy is largely due to residents not knowing how to properly join the donor registry. Michigan Libraries for Life helps to address that information need in our state. “Someone you know probably needs - or will someday need - a lifesaving organ or tissue transplant. People die waiting because not enough organs are available. Your library can be a great help by registering donors and providing information about organ donation,” said Anne Rau, Capital Area District Library librarian and living kidney donor. “By participating in Michigan Libraries for Life your library is helping to save lives.” We are excited to bring this life-saving event back in 2015! Libraries are welcome to participate for as many hours as they are able to staff a registration table in their libraries, from 1 hour to 7 days. This year’s drive will start on Monday, October 5th and run through Sunday, October 11th. Gift of Life Michigan<http://giftoflifemichigan.org/> will provide a free in-person training for library representatives at their Ann Arbor office on Friday, August 14th and a west Michigan training session, date to be determined. We are also developing training materials for those who are unable to attend the in-person sessions. University of Michigan Shapiro Undergraduate Library “I enjoyed taking part in this well-orchestrated event,” commented one librarian. “I hope to participate again next year.” The key to this program's success is the participation of many libraries across the state. Your library is warmly invited to join the 2015 Michigan Libraries for Life organ donor registration drive. If your organization would like to participate in this year’s effort, please complete this registration form http://bit.ly/ML4L2015. Under the Radar Michigan Book and DVD Bulk Purchase Opportunity and New MAP Partnership, Too!
by Jim Flury 12 May '15

12 May '15

All, I am pleased to announce that TLN has entered into a new partnership with Tom Daldin and Jim Edelman of the Emmy Award winning PBS show Under The Radar Michigan and Scribe Publishing Company http://utrmichigan.com/ They probably need no introduction to the Michigan library community, but here is what the director of one TLN library had to say about UTR: "We hosted the Under the Radar guys and it was fabulous. Tom Daldin and Jim Edelman from UTR accomplished something that doesn't happen often: they made us laugh over and over * and * reminded us how great Michiganders are. UTR isn't about "the best of the best" it's about the unique towns, festivals and travel opportunities there are in our state. It really boils down to the people behind these destinations. The coolest thing is that Tom and Jim are a Michigan success story themselves. They both found themselves out of work during the recession. They knew each other as fellow media professionals, so they put their heads together and started pitching ideas to PBS. Their book sales were brisk (we're hoping there can be a group discounted buy, maybe, for public libraries in Michigan?). At least four of our guests (full-house) said it was the best program they'd ever attended! Don't you want to have them, too?" As part of our partnership Tom and Jim are offering Michigan libraries a discounted purchase opportunity for their book Under the Radar: Michigan http://scribe-publishing-company.myshopify.com/products/utr as well as the four dvd set of their show. Michigan libraries can purchase the book for just $16.00. List price is $24.95. Michigan libraries can purchase the complete four dvd set of the show for just $90.00. List price is $120.00. TLN will place one consolidated order, ship to your library, pay the vendor invoice, then bill your library. Please email your order(s) for the book and/or dvd set to me by no later than Friday, February 13. In order to facilitate the distribution process here, we ask that non-TLN libraries also include their RIDES delivery number with their order. The other aspect of this new partnership concerns promotion by UTR of the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) program. Both Tom and Jim are media professionals. Their UTR Facebook https://www.facebook.com/UTRMichigan page has in excess of 45,000 likes. Their willingness to include MAP in their social media presence will be a huge boost to the promotional aspect of the program. To wit, here is what UTR has agreed to do, promotion-wise, with and for the MAP program: ** Support MAP communication efforts via their Social Media world ** Include a minimum of 1 post per month profiling events, press, news, etc that are part of MAP communication efforts ** Provide MAP with an ad presence for one year on the utrmichigan.com (Size: 90x120) ** UTR will include MAP events or news in its monthly newsletter, once per quarter. That is a lot of promotion, and it sounds like a lot of work, too! I think libraries are getting the easier end of the deal here :) Again, please send your orders for the UTR: Michigan book and/or four dvd set to my attention by no later than Friday, February 13. And don't forget to include that RIDES delivery number! Thanks.
