E-rate Workshops for Library Staff Around Michigan

The Library of Michigan is able to address the need for regional E-rate training this fall with help from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). First, our long-time consultant Linda Schatz will be at the Library of Michigan on November 20th for an all-day session on E-rate. The focus will be on updates and changes to the program. It is not specifically for newbies. Time: 8:00 - 4:30. Cost: $35. This session will solely contain library-specific information. Participation is limited to staff from Michigan libraries. In addition, the Michigan Department of Education has graciously invited Michigan library staff to attend the regional training that they are providing in six locations during October and November. Individuals well-versed in E-rate will be presenting the training along with a representative from E-rate Central. At each location, there will be a two-hour session on the changes coming to E-rate in the morning from 10:10 to 12:10: "Come learn how the Universal Service Fund (USF) E-rate program is evolving in its Funding Year 2015. This funding year is anticipated to be the first of several years in which there are going to be changes that will dramatically affect the E-rate program. Better known as E-rate 2.0 these changes will transform the program. Anticipate positive and negative impacts to the scope and what services are eligible for funding" And a two-hour session in the afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00: "designed for those who are new to the E-rate process or those who would like to rejuvenate their skills. This training will go over the basics of the form 470 and 471 and also the changes for the 2015 funding year." You are welcome to attend morning, afternoon, or both. Training is free to attendees. The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) is one of the largest and most respected cultural affairs agencies in the nation. DCA and NMSL are located in beautiful, historic Santa Fe - New Mexico's heart of governmental, artistic, and cultural activities. The State Librarian will have expansive partnering opportunities with other divisions within DCA including museum and historic sites' education programs and collections, and preservation, arts, and archaeological programs. The New Mexico State Library <http://nmstatelibrary.org/> has a staff of 47 full time employees and an annual budget of $5.7 million. The successful candidate will administer relevant and valued services to over 100 public and tribal libraries in New Mexico and will generally promote an effective statewide library system. The State Librarian will advocate for and oversee the provision of services directly to New Mexico's culturally diverse and special populations; and will foster positive and cooperative working relationships with other educational services and state and national library agencies. Understanding the roles of contemporary libraries in today's societies, the State Librarian will move progressively toward a future with innovative programs and services while continuously evaluating and supporting those of value that currently exist. The State Librarian will be responsible for administering grants-in-aid, library extension, development services, and the state documents depository program. The State Librarian will perform other duties as provided by the law and assure that NMSL meets all statutory requirements of the State of New Mexico. The successful candidate will have a strong and positive record in policy administration and strategic planning, budget planning and execution, leadership, and personnel management. The candidate will also possess the desire and ability to construct effective coalitions and work successfully with legislative, governmental, and other policy-making bodies. Knowledge and understanding of current library technologies are valuable assets an ideal candidate will bring to the position. A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to a wide variety of audiences will be essential to the candidate's success as the State Librarian. Support of New Mexico public and tribal libraries is central to the mission of the State Library; accordingly, some public and/or tribal library experience is preferred. REQUIREMENTS: . A Master's Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited library program, eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in libraries that includes at least five (5) years of experience in library management and/or administration. . Demonstrated ability to direct a complex organization, evaluate program performance, and implement effective solutions to ensure ongoing program refinement and enhancement for improvement. Pronunciator (Potential) Discounted Pricing and Trial

All, TLN has arranged for potential discounted pricing of the Pronunciator database. I say potential on account the discount is dependent upon our getting a minimum number of libraries from each pop served class, one through six, to commit to a subscription. If we succeed in doing so the discounted pricing for Pronunciator will be quite attractive, especially for smaller libraries. For example, TLN's smallest library (I am excluding Oakland County Research Library here, which for state aid reporting purposes has a pop served of 19) is Franklin Public Library, with a pop served of 3,150. Should we meet the minimum number of class one libraries, Franklin would pay $73.00 annually for access to the Pronunciator database. Below is a link to an August 4 Library Journal article called Library Linguistics. Nevertheless I would like to be able to give Pronunciator an idea by no later than the end of October, if we are even going to come close to the minimums required for the discount. Even if we don't meet the minimum by then, my plan is to go back to Pronunciator and present the numbers that we do have, and see if they will extend the discounts based on those numbers. Novi Library Program Rescheduled-Forensic Art: Capturing the Living, Identifying the Dead

Good Afternoon- I am sorry to inform you that the program that the Friends of the Novi Library were presenting on Wednesday, Oct 29 called Forensic Art: Capturing the Living, Identifying the Dead with Michigan State Detective/Trooper Sarah Krebs has been cancelled but rescheduled for Tuesday, February 10. Ms. Krebs was notified of an assignment that presents an unavoidable conflict for next week's presentation. She has to be on site for a forensic excavation in the U.P. on the 29th. The work involves both the organization of an investigative team and coordination with heavy equipment operators who need to schedule and transport the specialized vehicles/equipment they are using to the area to be excavated. She is being called in for the work, so her participation cannot be postponed or re-assigned to someone else. Ms. Krebs apologized for having to reschedule, but had no other choice. I hope you will be able to join us in February for this wonderful program. Thank you for your understanding of the situation.

Reports to: Head of Programs and Outreach Services Department: Public Services PURPOSE: Twenty-eight (28) hour per week vacancy for an energetic, team-oriented Youth Services Specialist with a strong knowledge of early literacy; childhood development; science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) programming; and a commitment to excellent customer service. The Youth Services Specialist will develop creative STEAM, maker, technology-based, and early literacy-based children’s programming; staff the library’s public service desk and offsite Maker Studio (ELPL Maker Studio 2.0); provide proactive reference and technology instruction for all ages; represent the library in the community; and work as a liaison with local schools and community organizations. ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS 1. Develop programming that supports the core mission of the library; in particular developing maker, science, technology-based and early literacy-based programs for children of all ages 2. Proactively provide customer service 3. Initiate the development and implementation of children’s programs (both in the library and offsite) to increase awareness of library resources, encourage library use and promote STEAM-based education within the library 4. Train staff who will help deliver children’s programming 5. Maintain contact and cultivate relationships with the public, schools, teachers and community organizations for educational and promotional purposes relating to the library’s children’s services 6. Provide interactive and unique story time and early childhood literacy activities 7. Coordinate volunteer activities as it relates to programs or support of operations 8. Train staff on early childhood literacy skills and development 9. Train staff on STEAM concepts and practices 10. Work with the Collection and Technical Services Librarian to develop and install an early literacy and parenting collection in the children’s area 11. Collaborate with the Collection and Technical Services Librarian to perform collection development and maintenance of the children’s collections REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training and/or Experience 1. Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, elementary education, science education, child development, art Education or a related major supplemented by relevant work experience 2. Experience developing early literacy and STEAM-based curricula and programs 3. Customer service experience 4. Experience developing and presenting programs for children of all ages 5. Experience with web technologies, social media, and other technologies 6. Strong leadership skills Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics 1. Ability to translate children’s and parents needs and interests into effective library services and programs 2.
