As recipients of the 2014 Will Eisner Graphic Novel Growth Grant, YDL is launching an expanded collection of graphic novels that deal with health issues, plus a special event to introduce this fascinating topic. We hope you'll join us on Thursday! She will discuss the surprising ways that Graphic Novels are being used in health care to help patients and caregivers get in touch with the emotional side of illness, treatment, and recovery. Highly recommended Hiking Presentation

Long distance hiker Chris "Wolverine" Hillier has given two presentations at the Dearborn Heights Caroline Kennedy Library and both were highly successful. Chris recently completed the 3100 mile Continental Divide Trail, and has also thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and the Appalachian Trail, making him a Triple Crown hiker (one of only two in Michigan). Chris delivers an informative, entertaining, and enthusiastic PowerPoint presentation about long distance hiking and his adventures. Comprise Technologies and other POS systems

We are considering Comprise Technologies for managing our computer access, e-commerce, and point of sale needs, and we want to get some feedback. If your library uses Comprise, which modules are you using? Are you happy with the software's performance? While we are interested in all the modules, we are particularly interested in purchasing a point of sale system such as Smart Money. Is anyone using the SmartPay / Smart Money modules with Comprise? The Library Research Service, an office of the Colorado State Library is offering a series of hands-on workshops covering data collection, evaluation, library impact and tips for aligning research efforts with national initiatives. Titled the "Research Institute for Public Libraries" or RIPL, this event will be a three day series of intensive workshops held in Colorado Springs July 27th - 30th, 2015. The current cost of RIPL, which includes lodging and most meals is $975. Transportation to the event is not included. Enrollment opens January 5, 2015 -and a maximum of 100 participants will take part in this immersive learning experience. 2015 Great Lakes Resource Sharing Conference Call for Proposals

On behalf of the Conference Program Committee, we would like to invite you to submit a proposal for the Great Lakes Resource Sharing Conference. The event will be held in Kalamazoo, Michigan at the Radisson on Friday, June 5, 2015. This conference is an opportunity for individuals working in resource sharing to gather information and communicate with other colleagues. We invite program proposals from September 15, 2014 to January 16, 2015. Accepted program proposal submissions should be 45 minutes in length including time for questions. Proposals might focus on any of the following areas: · Resource Sharing Best Practices · Marketing Services · Electronic Resources and Resource Sharing · Workflow improvements · Cooperative collection development · Consortial or Group Purchasing · Purchase on Demand · Reciprocal Borrowing · Shared Staffing and Training · Shared Discover Layers · E-Books Please submit a 150-200 word proposal for your presentation via the GLRSC website. Volunteer Readers Needed for Write Michigan

Hello all! If you've ever wanted to be part of an exciting endeavor, here's your chance to review entries for the Write Michigan Short Story Contest. * Who: Looking for volunteers, Friends of the library members, book club members, retired schoolteachers and librarians- AKA people who like to read!-to help us vet hundreds of entries into the top 10 semi-finalists' stories in three age categories. * What: Volunteer as a reviewer for entries into the Write Michigan Short Story Contest. This contest is a partnership between Kent District Library, Schuler Books and Music and the Herrick District Library. Write Michigan accepts entries of 3,000 words (or less) short stories from writers of all ages who live in Michigan. Winners will receive cash prizes and be published in an anthology by Chapbook Press. * Where: Submissions will be available for review online. Volunteers will be given a login. * When: Reading/reviewing will take place from December 3, 2014 and January 4, 2015. Contest ends November 30. * How: volunteers are asked to read entries in one of three categories (adult-18+; teen-12-17; youth-under 12). o Each volunteer will have 10-13 stories total. o Each story will be read by two volunteers. o Story authors will not be disclosed but we ask that if volunteers have entered the contest or have family members who did, they please review a different contest category. o Please find our judging criteria here: http://www.writemichigan.org/JudgingCriteria.pdf.
