{Please share!} Registration open for maker PD around the state. First event May 10 in Benton Harbor!
by Kristin Fontichiaro 13 Apr '16

13 Apr '16

Hello, fellow Michigan librarians! We are delighted to announce that registration is open for our one- and three-day maker professional development workshops around the state this summer. From May through late August, we'll be on the road, from Benton Harbor to Benzonia, Ann Arbor to Alpena, and both ends of the Upper Peninsula. Registration is free! Visit makinglibraries.si.umich.edu/road-trip to learn more and snag your spot. Choose the site closest to home or take a summer road trip with your colleagues! And please help us spread the word among your K-12 community, local troop leaders, public librarians, Boys and Girls Club facilitators, and more -- the more folks we involve from throughout our communities, the more impactful our collective maker work can be. Best, Kristin & the Making in Michigan Libraries team *This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services RE-05-15-0021-15.* -- Kristin Fontichiaro University of Michigan School of Information 4427 North Quad 105 S. Computer Problems
by Kayla Hampton 13 Apr '16

13 Apr '16

Hi Everyone! Our library has been experiencing several computer problems lately (virus protection popups, patrons log on to find a blank screen they cannot get past, printer issues that are "solved" only to not work again the next day, and so on). Our library board and I wanted to reach out and see what kind of systems and procedures other libraries use to keep their computers running smoothly. The library is a client of our county's IT department, so we do have access to people who can help us solve these problems, but it seems that I am contacting them on an almost-daily basis with either a new or repeating issue. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks, Kayla Hampton Lawton Public Library Director 125 S. Main St. Lawton, MI 49065 269-624-5481

School Library Management Software
by Kayla Hampton 13 Apr '16

13 Apr '16

Hello! I have a question on behalf of my town's school librarian. Currently, they are running a very old version of Follett Destiny and they want to update to a more current version. However, she is concerned that they would be better off trying a new system. She asked me to reach out and see if anyone has had success with a different product of if you recommend remaining with Destiny. I have never worked in a school library before, so I am unaware of the unique needs they have regarding their management software as opposed to those of a public library. Any advice I could pass on to her would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kayla Hampton Lawton Public Library Director 125 S. Main St. Lawton, MI 49065 269-624-5481

Holocaust Remembrance Webinar April 17 reminder
by Margaret Lincoln 13 Apr '16

13 Apr '16

Dear Colleagues, You have already received information about the series of events <https://sites.google.com/a/lakeviewspartans.org/holocaust-remembrance/> taking place in Battle Creek, Michigan in observance of Holocaust Remembrance 2016. I am pleased to let you know that the live webinar being offered on Sunday, April 17 from 1:00-2:00 PM (ET) is an Echoes and Reflections Enhanced Learning Opportunity developed and designed for educators who have previously completed an introductory Echoes and Reflections program. It will be presented live from Yad Vashem in Jerusalem by the International School for Holocaust Studies. The focus of the webinar will be on Righteous Among the Nations and is designed to prepare educators and students for viewing Yad Vashem's traveling exhibit "Besa: A Code of Honor" which is previewed at http://www.yadvashem.org/yv/en/exhibitions/besa/. This exhibit highlights Muslim Albanians who helped shelter Jews during the Holocaust. Expanding the topic of Rescuers and Non-Jewish Resistance, the session will provide a more in-depth study of the complexity of the decisions made by the Righteous Among the Nations in various countries. What moral lessons can be learned from these stories? How are the actions of communities and organizations different from those of diplomats or individuals? Can one person make a difference? Registration is available at http://bitly.com/BesaWebinar and will close on Wednesday night. There is no cost for this professional development event. This will also be the first time that Yad Vashem has delivered such an online training session in real time remotely from abroad to the US. You may participate in the webinar from your home or join a big screen group viewing of the webinar from the premises of Lakeview High School in Battle Creek. Registration is limited to 30 participants. You will receive an email confirmation that your registration has been received followed by login instructions by Thursday, April 14, 2016. Thank you for your consideration and we hope that you will be able to participate on April 17!
