E-Rate Training The Library of Michigan is partnering with the Michigan Department of Education to provide E-Rate training this fall. If you file for E-Rate, please consider taking advantage of these opportunities: The E-Rate Activity will be hosting three duplicate applicant trainings this fall. The day will cover changes to E-Rate as a result of the Modernization Orders as well as filing strategies. If you are new to E-Rate, it is highly advised that you attend the "E-Rate Applicant Beginner Training," on October 22, 2015 at Winding Brook (Shepherd, MI), in addition to one of the three "E-Rate Applicant Training" dates. Participants are also expected to arrive to training with a user account in EPC. The Clarkston Independence District Library is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our library team as a Part-Time Programming Aide Intern for the Children's and Teen Services Department. Below please find the job description and qualifications. Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: v Performs all routine duties of the circulation desk, including item circulation tasks, fines and fees collection, opening and closing procedures, and basic reference services. v Plans, supports, promotes, and conducts library programs and outreach activities. v Performs routine collection maintenance tasks, including shelving, item retrieval, collection development input, and weeding tasks. v Maintains library databases and files as connected to assigned tasks, including patron records, item records, and both electronic and physical files of library data. v Plans and implements special projects as assigned by supervisor or library director. v Performs other duties as assigned. Job requirements: v High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. v Valid driver’s license and available, reliable transportation. Ability to attend occasional training and other library-related events out of the area as assigned. v Ability to maintain a positive attitude of customer service and team spirit, even under trying circumstances. v Ability to communicate effectively and with professionalism, both with the public and with other members of staff. Communication skills must be evident in oral and written forms with proper usage, spelling, and grammar. v Ability to acquire and maintain a working knowledge of current general principles, methods, and practices of public library operations, and of NADL’s specific policies and procedures. v Ability to acquire and maintain an understanding of library services, materials, and technology sufficient to answer patrons’ directional, informational, or readers’ advisory questions. v Ability to operate all equipment connected with job duties without direct supervision. v Ability to consistently and accurately type at 35 wpm or higher. v Ability to work under general supervision with latitude in exercising independent judgment and discretion subject to NADL policies, procedures, and professional practices. v Visual acuity and physical skills necessary to retrieve and maintain library materials, operate library equipment/technology, and interact with patrons and staff. v Ability to push/pull fully loaded book carts and lift/carry materials weighing up to 40 pounds. v Hearing ability to answer telephone and patron inquiries. The inner sleeves are affixed as a single unit, i.e., it's not like a ring-binder that you can pop open to remove or add individual sleeves. All Welcome! Saturday October 10th at the Library of Michigan, 2:30-3:30 Author Ruth Ann Fruehauf will be talking about her book Singing Wheels and her grandfather's company of truck trailers in Michigan. To commemorate her grandfather's 1914 invention of the semi-trailer, Ruth Ann Fruehauf wrote a book, "Singing Wheels'" honoring the successes and accomplishments of the Fruehauf family legacy. The Fruehauf Trailer Company was the dominant trailer manufacture for nearly a century and became the 75th largest company in the world when it declared bankruptcy in 1997. It all started in a Detroit shop operated by a hard working German immigrant, August Fruehauf. After inventing the concept of the semi-trailer, the company went onto invent the automatic fifth wheel hitch, the dump trailer, the tanker trailer, refrigerated trailers and the shipping container. The colorful history is captured in a coffee table book with 90 pages of photographs from the family archives. Ms. Canfora will work from the Society's Lansing-based office, providing leadership for strategic fund-development initiatives, such as major and planned giving programs, annual giving, donor stewardship and recognition programs, grant writing, and public relations related to development. "Ms. Canfora comes to us with more than 15 years of development experience," commented Larry J. Wagenaar, Executive Director of the Society. "She has a proven track record of successful fundraising and also has expertise in prospective donor research and donor cultivation and administration." Prior to this position, Ms. Canfora was the owner of New Compass Consulting, an independent consulting firm that specialized in nonprofit fund development, political fundraising and project management. She also worked at Progress Michigan as the Michigan Summit Director and Michigan Election Coalition Coordinator. In those positions, Ms. Canfora managed the solicitation of sponsorship funds and monitored a private foundation grant. Previous to those positions, she worked at state agencies and political-based entities, where she planned and implemented fundraising programs, administered several multi-million-dollar grants, performed outreach initiatives, and coordinated fundraising events.
