Computer Permission Slips for Minors
by Ashlee McClaughry 12 Apr '16

12 Apr '16

Hello, We currently require parents to sign a permission slip for children under 17 to use our computers. We are thinking of doing away with the permission slips for several reasons. 1. Parents are not reading the slips, they're just signing 2. Anyone using our computers has to accept our computer policy before they can get on the Internet 3. Our Internet is filtered in the children's department, and children are not allowed on the computers in the adult department unless a parent is sitting with them 4. We have kept up with a list of children who have and have not turned in permission slips (several hundred names are on this list), but as staff retires or moves onto other positions, our newer staff does not know who all these children are and have found using this list to be very confusing and/or tedious. The biggest reason we have not discontinued use of the permission slips is because our Wi-Fi is not filtered (but our Internet is). We are wondering if other libraries require permission slips before allowing minors to use filtered computers? If so, what are your reasons? If you don't require permission slips or have done away with them, what are your reasons? Thanks in advance! -- Ashlee McClaughry, Young People's Librarian Comstock Township Library 6130 King Highway P.O. Box 25 Comstock, MI 49041 269-345-0136 ashlee.ctl(a)gmail.com

Adjustable folding tables
by Lois Hartman 12 Apr '16

12 Apr '16

I would like recommendations for durable folding tables for our community room. Specifically 8' in length with the resin/plastic top and height adjustable. I have bought from various places but we are finding they break down at the frame. Maybe that is normal with the use they get from people putting them up and taking them down, or is there some that are more durable than others? Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. Cost is also a factor of course. I find many tables that are reasonably priced but not adjustable and we really need the adjustable ones because we use them for story hour. Paper circuits Copper tape purchase question
by Kelaine Mish 12 Apr '16

12 Apr '16

Would anyone out there who has done a paper circuits program with adhesive copper tape be willing to share where you found the tape at a decent price? Need it for about 300-500 person event. I'm seeing some for $2.95 a roll (1/4 in width, 50 feet) but it doesn't have conductive adhesive and is pretty thin (.08 mm thick) and am wondering if it will work well enough to light up a 5mm led powered by a cr2032 coin cell battery? I can't afford the over $10-20 dollars a roll I'm seeing on other sites. Thanks, Kelaine Mish, MLIS Kent District Library East Grand Rapids branch Kmish(a)kdl.org -- Galatians 5:22-6:10 (with some creative control) The harvest of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, fidelity, gentleness, and self-control.....so let us never tire of doing good, for if we do not slacken our efforts we shall in due time reap our harvest. Go Deep With MAP
by Jim Flury 12 Apr '16

12 Apr '16

All, As some of you may know, my family's origins are in the Upper Peninsula (Finland prior, but that's another story). Yes, they were Yoopers :) Alas, I was born a troll :( When we would go "home" to visit family in the summer, we rode around in their AMC cars (anyone remember those?) and watched on television (or more often listened to on the radio), the Milwaukee Brewers (remember, this was the far western/northern U.P.). In the Fall our relatives looked forward to the start of football season or more precisely, the start of the Green Bay Packers football season. We would watch or listen to Bart Starr (anyone remember him?) "go deep," often against a team that in those years was based in Detroit, then Pontiac, and now Detroit again. AMC is long gone, although their Jeep lives on. I believe Bart Starr is still around, although he has to be getting up there. And thanks to the Michigan Activity Pass, between Memorial Day and October 15 your patrons can "go deep" with the newest MAP partner venue, Iron Mountain Iron Mine in Vulcan http://ironmountainironmine.wix.com/ironmine Following your tour, buy a pasty to eat and and a souvenir mineral to take home. Special thanks to Megan Buck, Director, Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain for doing the heavy lifting to get Iron Mountain Iron Mine (and a number of other destinations in her service area) signed up for MAP. Thank you for your support and promotion of the Michigan Activity Pass program. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
by Josh Schu 11 Apr '16

11 Apr '16

Out of curiosity, has anyone thought about where they will place the new Harry Potter book in their collections? It seems like it may be *intended* to be a part of the series but was written in a different format (it's a play) and possibly for a different audience (some vendors list it as juvenile and some as adult). So where will the book ultimately live in your library? * Fiction or Nonfiction? * Teen or Adult? * Forget it! We're putting it with the rest of the series! Each library will have a different take on this, I was just wondering what the general feeling was. Thanks for your thoughts! Summer Reading 2016 PSAs are available now!
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 11 Apr '16

11 Apr '16

Please see below for information on the Summer Reading PSAs, including spots with Kate DiCamillo, and how to download them. Karren Reish Library Grants Coordinator Library of Michigan 517-241-0021 reishk(a)michigan.gov<mailto:reishk@michigan.gov> Each April, Michigan celebrates the Month of the Young Child. Go to www.miaeyc.org<http://www.miaeyc.org> to learn more. [Description: Description: cid:image001.jpg@01CBED4E.B36258B0] We are excited to announce that the 2016 PSA pieces are now available for download from the CSLP website! When you login to the website you can access and download the pieces under the Proprietary Downloads section by clicking on PSA. There is a section with links suitable for use by librarians on library websites/social media and a section with links suitable for use by broadcast stations. Please note that there are also a number of PSA pieces featuring Summer Reading Champion Kate DiCamillo that your librarians can use to promote summer reading to children or to community leaders - an exciting continuation of our relationship with Kate for this summer! There are a few important points to keep in mind when accessing the PSA files online and they are as follows: 1. If you are just looking for quick and easy access to general PSA pieces to share on your library website, share with schools, play on a library television set, and so forth you will most likely want to use the files from the section for librarians in the iPhone/iPad Kate DiCamillo link. These files are the smallest size files and will take the least amount of time to download. Do note also that the first file listed under this link is the largest sized file as it will play all the PSA pieces on a loop – a new addition for this year! 2. If you are looking to customize the main PSA pieces with details about your library you can do that and would want to access files from either the section for librarians or the section for broadcasters depending on the type of file/quality you will need. It is best to consult with staff in your library system, state, or community about what your needs might be should you wish to customize or share on broadcast television. 3. Files that are of higher quality and resolution are larger in size – and will take some time to download depending on the Internet access at your library. Files that end in .mov or .mpeg are larger sized files and will take longer to download. Files that end in .m4v are smaller files and should download in a reasonable amount of time. 4. You may want to make sure that your media player/computer is current on all its updates and recommend the same to your librarians. These files will play in Windows Media Player or Quicktime. Quicktime is available for free online. If you are just interested in viewing the PSA pieces or sharing on social media – please consider linking or sharing the videos from CSLP’s YouTube page! This is a very quick and easy option for those who do not wish to customize or download pieces - but rather just share and view! Those links can be found here: PSA :30 English https://youtu.be/MNkEY1Ugar4 PSA :30 Spanish https://youtu.be/YzN0FaRPZBg Kate :30 Summer Reading Message: https://youtu.be/O0Euf2sZon0 Kate Summer Message: https://youtu.be/UXOXEztYWBI Kate Work Together Message: https://youtu.be/aN2LSKFLYgk Kate Sports Message: https://youtu.be/rLobHhpL-5U :60 - PSA + Kate: https://youtu.be/vwQa-M9S7Vg Finally, those of you who ordered DVDs of the PSA pieces should be receiving those at some point next week. They are being processed by the disc duplicator at this time with an estimated completion and shipment date for the end of this week. Also, additional discs will eventually be available for purchase on the CSLP shop online. Thanks, Charlotte Johnston CSLP PR & Marketing Chair
