Great presentation
by Judy Czarnecki 09 Apr '16

09 Apr '16

Hello, I just wanted to share the name of a great presenter if you are looking for an adult program. Teresa Irish presented last night on the Journey of the Thousand Letters. After her father passed, they found 1,000 letters that he had written home during his tour of duty in the European theater during WWII, and Teresa wrote a book which includes many of the letters titled A Thousand Letters Home. Teresa kept the crowd enraptured with her tales of family life in Saginaw, her father's war time experiences, and his pride in his children. She supported her talk with music and photographs, and willingly answered all questions at the conclusion of her talk. Perhaps best of all, from a library staff point of view, Teresa was a dream to work with-very organized, and quick to respond to emails or calls. From comments made, our patrons thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. Her website: www.athousandletters.com Judy Czarnecki Youth Services and Programs Team Chippewa River District Library Mt. Publisher partners with libraries for Money Smart Week promotion
by White, Shannon (MDE) 09 Apr '16

09 Apr '16

Money Smart Week is April 23-30. Below you can find information on additional low cost resources your library may take advantage of to help support learning in your community. Also, take a look at other resources available at no cost on the website, www.moneysmartweek.org/resources<http://www.moneysmartweek.org/resources> Shannon Libraries celebrating Money Smart Week, April 23 - 30, will have the opportunity to take advantage of an offer from publisher HarperCollins to receive special pricing for simultaneous access to seven finance-related eBook titles. >From April 15 through May 15, participating libraries can obtain, at the price of $100, unlimited access to the following titles: "Real Money Answers for Every Woman," by Patrice C. Washington; "The New Totally Awesome Money Book for Kids," by Arthur Bochner and Rose Bochner; "The Wall Street Journal Guide to the New Rules of Personal Finance," by Dave Kansas; "The Aspirational Investor," by Ashvin B. Chhabra; "The Opposite of Spoiled: Raising Kids Who Are Grounded, Generous, and Smart About Money," by Ron Lieber; "The Intelligent Investor," by Benjamin Graham"; and "The Truth About Money," by Ric Edelman. Libraries should contact their vendors for further information. Created by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2002, Money Smart Week(r) is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances. The American Library Association (ALA) is among several partnering organizations. Participating libraries provide programming for all ages and all stages of life on topics such as: basic budgeting; managing student debt; retirement planning; home purchasing; saving money through couponing; and how to prevent identity theft. "The ALA is excited that HarperCollins is providing this opportunity for libraries to circulate information and resources to help Americans realize their financial goals," said ALA President Sari Feldman. "Financial literacy skills are absolutely crucial in our society, regardless of age or financial status." "We also applaud HarperCollins for recognizing that libraries are dynamic centers of learning in the digital age," said Feldman, who led an ALA delegation in meetings with Big 5 publishing executives in December to discuss expanding the options for library ebook lending business models to give libraries more choice - one idea that emerged was the possibility of special pr motions tied to specific subject matter. "This is an important step in the development of the relationship between libraries and publishers, a relationship that will have long-lasting implications for reading and literacy." Carolyn Anthony, co-chair of the ALA's Digital Content Working Group (DCWG) and a member of the delegation that met in December, said of the promotion , "This is a positive development and a clear indication that the relationship between ALA and publishers is moving in the right direction. We welcome experimentation with terms and pricing that will help libraries develop breadth in their digital collections." Special Library Presentation: 101 Things that Happened on the Mackinac Bridge Mark your calendars forApril 13^th at 6:30 pm and enjoy /101 Things that Happened on the Mackinac Bridge /presented by Mike Fornes through the support of the Special Collections Department at the George N. Fletcher Public Library will be an entertaining, informative presentation about historic, tragic, and humorous events on the iconic “Mighty Mack.” Since construction began in 1954, the Mackinac Bridge has withstood gale-force winds, the pressure of crushing ice flows, and blinding snowstorms. Since its opening in 1957, it has been struck by lightning, and hit by an airplane and a ship, yet still stands as perhaps the safest five miles of I-75. Take a trip through the first six decades of the bridge’s history and experience unusual crossings, triumph and tragedy. Parades of vehicles and pedestrians have crossed over the Mackinac Bridge and flotillas of ships have passed under it. Hear the stories, see the photos and meet the people who have made this engineering wonder a symbol of the state of Michigan. Author Mike Fornes covered the Mackinac Bridge and the USCG Mackinaw for 26 years for several outlets in Northern Michigan, including radio and television stations and the Cheboygan Daily Tribune. A resident of Mackinaw city, Fornes is frequently in demand as a guest speaker and presenter to tour groups, cruise ship organizations and historical societies. He is the author of the 2008 Michigan Notable Book /Mackinac Bridge- A 50 Year Chronicle 1957-2000, USCGC Mackinaw WAGB 83: An Illustrated History of a Great Lakes Queen/ and Arcadia Publishing’s /Images of America:/ /Mackinac Bridge/ and /USCG Mackinaw WLBB-30/.
