Hoopla checkouts question
by Hillary A Berry 19 Apr '16

19 Apr '16

For those libraries using Hoopla, how many checkouts per month are your patrons allowed to select? Do you limit your checkouts to district patrons or also include reciprocal? Thanks for any info you can share! Hillary A. Berry Cataloger/Community Services Librarian Paw Paw District Library 609 W Michigan Ave Paw Paw, MI 49079 269.657.3800

guns in the library
by Perri Saunders 19 Apr '16

19 Apr '16

Do any of you have a procedure in place for when someone enters the library with a gun -(in a non-threatening way, of course!) ? I've been told quite a few years ago to call 911 and have the police come to check permits and such. This certainly doesn't sound like the best, least inflammatory way to handle it, but I don't know of something better. What do you think? -- Perri Saunders, Director White Pigeon Township Library 102 N. Kalamazoo St., P.O. Re: [Michlib-l] Larry Martin's WWII In Their Own Words at Otsego District Library
by Diane Devries 19 Apr '16

19 Apr '16

We are also having Larry Martin at the Otsego District Library on Thursday, June 2, at 7:00 p.m. Larry is going to feature Donald Brininstool, a Normandy paratrooper and Battle of the Bulge WWII Vet. Everyone is welcome to join us (no registration is necessary). We have heard nothing but good things about Larry's program and he's been very easy to work with. Diane DeVries Assistant Director Otsego District Library 269-694-9690 -----Original Message----- From: michlib-l-bounces(a)mcls.org [mailto:michlib-l-bounces@mcls.org] On Behalf Of Wendy Mutch Sent: Tuesday, April 19, 2016 2:54 PM To: michlib-l <michlib-l(a)mcls.org>; TLN Adult Services List <adult-services(a)lists.tln.lib.mi.us> Subject: [Michlib-l] Larry Martin's WWII In Their Own Words at Northville District Library Colleagues, Some of you have seen Larry Martin's WWII in Their Own Words and have hosted him at your library. I invite you to see/meet Larry on Tuesday, May 24 at 7pm at the Northville Community Center (adjacent to the Northville District Library). This presentation will highlight the life of Francis Angier: Service: Army Air Corps Unit: 8th Air Force Francis Angier was shot down on the 25th of October, 1944. He was at 30,000 ft. when his plane was shot down resulting in the death of several of his crewmen. Francis did not open his parachute until he was at treetop level because the fuselage of the plane was very close to him and he was afraid that the parachute would become entangled in the wreckage of the plane. Francis was horribly injured in the parachute landing as well as being hit in the face by a civilian with a large piece of wood later on. Francis was taken to Stalag Luft #3 which is where an escape took place that was later made into a movie called “The Great Escape”. He was told by some of the men that were there at the time that the movie was quite accurate in the portrayal of what happened, though Mr. Angier arrived about a month after the escape took place. Lt. Angier also tells of the forced march he endured in order to escape the Russians though they were our allies. He had to suffer the worst of the winter of 1945 and his weight dropped 60 lbs. You can register for the program online here: http://bit.ly/1VyrCew or by calling the library at 248.349.3020. I have also attached a flyer, if you'd care to post it in your library. MIX (Michigan Instruction Exchange) Conference Call for Proposals
by Veronica E. Bielat 19 Apr '16

19 Apr '16

MIX (Michigan Instruction Exchange) is looking for your proposal for a brief presentation or Lightening Talk for the MIX Conference scheduled for Friday, August 5 at Macomb Community College, Professional Development Center at Macomb University Center, Clinton Township This year's theme is Information Literacy Skills and High School-College Transition, University/High School Outreach and Collaborations, and Common Core/Information Literacy connections. Do you have a program, project, collaboration, experience or idea that explores and of these themes? If so, please consider submitting a proposal to present at the MIX Conference. We invite academic librarians, public librarians and school media specialists to submit proposals. Presentation opportunities fall into two types: Short Presentations (20 minutes plus 5 minutes Q&A) These are the more traditional conference style presentations, with or without Powerpoints or Prezis, and handouts. Lightning Talks (5 minutes) Lightning talks are strictly limited to 5 minutes and 7 slides. Your goal is to provide an overview that will inspire your audience to learn more about your work. Because of the nature of these very short presentations, all selected Lightning Talk presenters will have an opportunity to discuss their presentation at a "Talk with the Talkers" informal discussion with interested attendees after all Lighting Talks have been completed. You are welcome to bring handouts or other materials to distribute. (Think of this as comparable to a poster session; the "Talk with the Talkers" period will last for 30 minutes immediately following the Lightning Talks.) All proposals will be blind-reviewed by the MIX Conference Planning Group. To apply, complete the form linked below, which asks for a maximum 250-word summary. We look forward to hearing about what you are doing! Proposal Form available at https://waynestate.az1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_3VHesYAqjw0E4Zv. Deadline: May 15, 2016 Questions? by Margaret Crockett 19 Apr '16

Does anyone have The Empty Schoolhouse by Natalie Savage Carlson in their junior fiction collection? It uses racist language and we wondered if anyone out there saw a reason for keeping it in their collection.
