Your suggestions are needed! Libraries Read: 1 Book 2017
by Jan Davidson 19 Apr '17

19 Apr '17

Please share! Libraries Read: 1 Book Libraries Read: 1 Book is an annual "library community read" project focusing on professional development. Library staff from all types of libraries are encouraged to participate by voting on which book should be selected, then participate in the discussion, whether online or in-person. We will join together, across state lines and library types, to read and discuss the same book. Submit titles for 2017 Libraries Read: 1 Book! The books the past two years have evoked spirited discussion and a wonderful networking opportunity. This year, we'd like to invite YOU, our community, to submit titles for consideration. We hope that by opening the submission process to a wide group of library professionals, we'll discover the perfect book to read together! With your help, we will select a book that is relevant to our profession, provides thought-provoking ideas for discussion, and has appeal across all types of libraries. Please visit the Google voting form<https://goo.gl/forms/MhTxXXRwlKTYMerm2> [new-window-icon.png] and submit one or two titles for consideration. Submissions will be accepted until May 15, 2017. ALA on Net neutrality: America’s libraries stand for freedom and fairness
by Steven Bowers 19 Apr '17

19 Apr '17

>From books to broadband, libraries have always existed to provide equitable opportunities for all. Few can doubt the internet’s central role as a driver for expanding civic and economic opportunity, from free speech to the free market. Equitable treatment on the communications channel for the 21st Century is near and dear to librarians and the publics we serve. The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) 2015 Open Internet Order provided clear, enforceable rules to ensure these opportunities are preserved for all. America’s public, research, academic and school libraries collect, create and disseminate essential information to the public over the internet. We are content providers, digitizing and sharing products that we create or partner with others to disseminate. We provide access to local, state and federal government documents – many of which are exclusively online. And, we facilitate online collaboration and creation by students, teachers, researchers, entrepreneurs and everyone else in our communities. We’re a critical place for the public to access the internet. Local public libraries are often the only no-fee public internet access point in our communities. Libraries particularly serve the information needs of the most vulnerable segments of our population, including those in rural areas, unemployed and low-income consumers, older adults and people with disabilities. This is the crucial mission of libraries: to transform communities through information. Network neutrality is essential to this mission. Robots at the Library May 6 - 13th Reminder
by Jean Montgomery 19 Apr '17

19 Apr '17

Just a reminder that you can contact your local First Robotics Teams to have them demo their robot at your library during the week of May 6th - 13th. This link will give you information about the libraries within Michigan - http://www.firstinmichigan.org/frc/mi_frc_teams.php This might be a busy time for some libraries since it is around Championship time, but please contact them any way to setup another time. Please feel free to use the attached documents to advertise the robotics team visit. As a side note we have a friendly competition going with Canada who has around the same number of teams as the state of Michigan (451). The bet is that they can get more robotics teams to Libraries than the state of Michigan. To prove that the team has come to your library please post a picture on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the tag #Robots@theLibrary Thanks and please take advantage of this fun event!
