College readiness activities or programs?
by Michele D Behr 21 Apr '17

21 Apr '17

Hello Michigan library folks, I am conducting a research project concerning library involvement in college readiness for teens. I am hoping to find out more about the kinds of things Michigan libraries are engaged in in this area. I am interested in hearing about any or all of the following: -- Library programming offered for teens that has to do with exploring college and career options -- Programs, websites, etc. sponsored by libraries, that are designed to assist with academic skills preparation for college -- Partnerships with schools or other organizations for the purpose of improving college readiness or preparation, or transition from high school to college -- Any other library outreach in the community that has goals related to college or career readiness Please respond directly to me. I would be happy to summarize for the list if other people are interested. Thanks! Michele Michele D. FOIA Requests
by Nancy Studebaker-Barringer 21 Apr '17

21 Apr '17

We received the FOIA request from OpenTheBooks that has been much discussed. We complied and sent info as requested. We use Quickbooks and it to about 20 minutes for the bookkeeper to export a report and make a few changes as requested. We have about 25 employees. I don't understand why there is so much resistance to just responding to the request. It seems some folks are spending more time trying to wiggle out of it or outsmart the folks making the request - than it would take to just comply and fulfill the information request. I believe in the value of transparency in government- even when it's inconvenient or uncomfortable for me and mine. NSB -- Sent from Gmail Mobile

Collecting millage success rate statistics
by Kristy Cooper 21 Apr '17

21 Apr '17

Hi everyone, I am doing some research on millage campaign success rates. Can you share with me (off list): 1. Your library's name 2. The population size you serve 3. How many mils did you ask for? 4. When did it pass and how long was it for? (e.g. 10 years) 5. How much did it pass by? Or not pass by? I will happily compile all of the results and share them with everyone. Thanks! -- Kristy Cooper Save the Westland Library Campaign: https://www.facebook.com/westlandlibrarians/

REGISTRATION IS CLOSING! Today is your last chance to register for the "RDA for non-catalogers: What do I need to know?"<http://mcls.org/training-events/training-events-list/training-event/?ref_cI…> workshop next week! Has it felt like your catalogers have been speaking a new language lately, using terms like RDA and FRBR? RDA (Resources, Description, and Access) is now the cataloging standard, implemented in 2013 to replace AACR2. FRBR is part of the infrastructure of this new code. What does this mean to the non-cataloger? What kind of changes should library staff and the end user expect to see as a result of RDA? What are some of the major changes between AACR2 and RDA? Wednesday, April 26, 10:00am - 12:00noon Eastern, online webinar workshop. Register today<http://mcls.org/training-events/training-events-list/training-event/?ref_cI…>, before you miss your chance! ********************** Jan Davidson Administrative Assistant, Member Engagement Midwest Collaborative for Library Services Phone: 517-492-3811 / toll-free 800-530-9019 x111 davidsonj(a)mcls.org<mailto:davidsonj@mcls.org> www.mcls.org<http://www.mcls.org/> Check out the MCLS Training Calendar at: mcls.org/calendar<http://mcls.org/calendar> Like us on Facebook for the latest MCLS news: facebook.com/<https://www.facebook.com/mcls.org>mcls.org<https://www.facebook.com/mcls.org> Follow us on Twitter: @mclsorg

Smithsonian's Museum on Main Street: Water/Ways
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 21 Apr '17

21 Apr '17

As a reminder, the deadline for this popular program is July 10. The Michigan Humanities Council invites Michigan libraries to apply to host the Smithsonian's Water/Ways exhibition<http://www.michiganhumanities.org/water-ways/> in 2018 and 2019. The Water/Ways exhibition explores how water connects human beings with our surrounding environment, while shedding light on its environmental, cultural, and historical importance. As "The Great Lakes State," water is an invaluable resource and part of Michigan's identity, and we are looking for six communities to host the exhibit and share their local water stories. Host communities will have the chance to engage in conversations with water experts, host the exhibit, create additional programming, and help shape the dialogue on Michigan's water policy. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact James Nelson at jnelson(a)mihumanities.org<mailto:jnelson@mihumanities.org>. Sonya Schryer Norris Library of Michigan 702 W. Invest in a Maker Space, add staff, or buy more books? Determining how best to use limited funds to get the greatest return has plagued libraries since the newest technology was the phonograph. How do we balance the need to serve new users in new ways when we don’t have the funds to take care of our traditional users in the traditional ways they expect -- i.e. buy more books? Join three leading public library directors as they share the math they use to balance this equation in their communities. This session will provide three dynamic visions of how the communities of Hillsboro, OR; Delaware County, OH; and Charleston, SC are balancing the demands of the new while delivering services to everyday readers. They will share the challenges they are facing, where they think public libraries are headed and where readers’ advisory service fits in their 21st century libraries. They will also give you hints about how to win approval (and funding) of your ideas for enhancing your readers' access to and enjoyment of books.
