Hello all! Does anyone know of a person who is proficient in WordPress who would like to design a number of websites? We are in desperate need of a revamp at our library and a local hardware/software business would like to employ someone to design a number of websites for clients. Please feel free to drop me an email in regards to this matter. Thanks in advance! Gail Nartker, Director Sandusky District Library http://sandusky.lib.mi.us

MeL Minute: Encyclopedia of Associations Joins Resources in MeL's Gale Directory Library
by Biggs, Deb Renee (MDE) 20 Apr '17

20 Apr '17

Hello Everyone! We are happy to announce that the Encyclopedia of Associations (EA): National Organizations of the U.S., 2017, 56th edition has been added to the Gale Directory Library<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-gale.php?database=GDL> in MeL! Click in the "Organizations" + box to select and then type your search term in the "Basic Search" box keeping in mind that you can specify your search words as well as limit results. EA is the most comprehensive source for detailed information on more than 24,000 nonprofit American membership organizations of national scope and multi-national scope. Every entry offers a wealth of valuable data, typically including the organization's complete name, address and phone number together with the primary official's name and title; fax number, website and email when available; founding date, purpose, activities and dues; narrative description of association's purpose and activities; national and international conferences; and more. Encyclopedia of Associations can be an excellent resource for small business development and for entrepreneurs as well as general research. MeL databases are available to Michigan residents or Michigan library access only. MeL Minutes are brought to you by the Library of Michigan. Want more information on MeL? Stay tuned for the next MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, email us at contact(a)mel.org<mailto:contact@mel.org>, visit http://mel.org<http://mel.org/>, or Sign up for the MeL Minute and other Library of Michigan e-mail lists via GovDelivery<https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/MILOM/subscriber/new>. Any libraries who don't use web filters?
by Ashlee McClaughry (Roseville Public Library) 20 Apr '17

20 Apr '17

Hello, We're having ongoing issues with our web filters blocking our WiFi users from certain websites that are safe, and with it conflicting with Envisionware. My director is at the point where the problems the web filters are causing outweigh the preventative good of having them in place and would like to remove them. Before we do so, we are wondering if any libraries who have stopped using filters could contact me off list and share why they removed them and what their experience has been? Thank you! Ashlee McClaughry, Systems Librarian Roseville Public Library 26777 Gratiot Ave. Roseville, MI 48066 586-447-4559 amcclaughry(a)roseville-mi.gov

Old schools as branch locations
by Mark Ehle 20 Apr '17

20 Apr '17

Hello, Folks - I had an idea a while back and wanted to bounce this off you guys to see if I am crazy or not. Seems to me that with all the elementary buildings that are available now in districts that are losing students due to school of choice, they might make nice facilities for library branch locations. If you could find one that is not too old, even a small one would have quite a bit of space. They all come with gymnasiums and such so there would be room to hold pretty much any function you could think of. They are mostly one story so the weight of books would not be a concern. What you don't use for the library could be used for other community services or even just storage. Is this just nuts? Or not? Thanks - Mark Ehle --

Freedom to Read Foundation Offers 2017 Banned Books Week Grants The 2017 Banned Books Week celebration is September 24 - 30, 2017. The application process is now open<http://www.ftrf.org/?page=Krug_BBW>! Deadline is May 12, 2017. Applications are open for the Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF) Banned Books Weeks Grants offered through the Judith F. Krug Memorial Fund. Each year FTRF distributes grants to non-profit organizations to support activities that raise awareness of intellectual freedom and censorship issues during the annual Banned Books Weeks celebration (Sept. 24 - 30, 2017.) Staff at all types of libraries, schools, universities, and community organizations are encouraged to apply. Grants are awarded at two levels, $1,000 and $2,500. To be eligible for a grant, organizations must not have been a recipient of an FTRF grant within the past five years. Grantees also receive an ALA 2017 Banned Books Week Promo-Kit valued at $84 (which includes one poster, one roll of stickers, one 50-pack of the ?2017 Field Report: Banned and Challenged Books,? one 100-pack of bookmarks and one tote bag). Grantees are encouraged to share their events on social media and with the press. A follow-up report detailing expenditures, numbers of participants, links to press coverage and a narrative of the event is due within six weeks of the Banned Books Week celebration. FTRF Founder Judith F. Krug was a fierce proponent of education and intellectual freedom. During Krug's lengthy career she worked non-stop to prevent censorship and protect First Amendment rights. Librarians and intellectual freedom advocates have an opportunity to continue this work and stand up for the First Amendment by providing innovative, educational and often fun programming to highlight Banned Books Week. Visit the Freedom to Read Foundation <http://www.ftrf.org/?page=Krug_BBW> online to learn more about past recipients and their projects or to apply. Greetings, My Director and I are looking into possible Library Board Bylaws that discuss the usage of Skype for library board meetings. We have board members that want to use Skype to participate in meetings when they can’t physically be there.
