Hi! Attached are the grant applications for the Metro Detroit Book & Author Society to be presented at the Fall luncheon. The 2017 Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award Applications are invited for a $1,000.00 Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award grant to be awarded to a Friend of the Library group in the metropolitan-Detroit area by the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society. This grant is awarded to support a program or project that fills a significant need affecting the library’s patrons and community. Friends of the Library groups in the metropolitan-Detroit area are eligible to apply. The grant will be presented at the Fall 2017 Book & Author Luncheon on Monday, October 16, 2017, at Burton Manor in Livonia. Support efforts will involve most Atlantic Seaboard libraries in serving as a lifeline for residents in dire need of FEMA and insurance forms, access to electrical power, internet access, heat or important information about storm relief and recovery efforts. “Our hearts and prayers go to the more than 10 million citizens working to recover from this historic and devastating storm,” said ALA President Loida Garcia-Febo. “The ALA and library community have a long history of helping those in need and will work to support our chapters during this crisis. RESULTS Does your library have locking DVD and Blu-Ray cases?

Thank you for the great feedback regarding my - to lock or not to lock the DVD cases – question. The results are in! 23 libraries responded. 8 of them lock their DVD cases. Most responding libraries are using One-Time locking cases. 15 libraries do not have locking DVD cases. Of those 15 libraries, 8 of them store some or all of their collection in a different location to be retrieved upon check out. The biggest factor in deciding to purchase locking cases is the cost. For libraries that only have a few DVDs go missing each year it is not worth the cost to switch the cases. For other libraries it was a good investment to maintain the collection. The most surprising find was that at least five libraries have recently stopped using locking cases and/or put the discs back in their unlocked cases to sit on the shelf. The reasons varied including space issues, locking mechanism issues, and also the time and effort it takes to switch cases and retrieve discs. You’ve given me a lot to think about, thanks again! Posting on behalf of the Wayne Library Board Library Director Job Posting The Board of Trustees of the Wayne Public Library seeks a dynamic and innovative Library Director who will lead the library, spearheading the delivery of traditional and emerging library services that will meet the needs of all the City of Wayne’s population segments. The Wayne Public Library is a Class IV city library serving approximately 17,000 residents. In August 2018, a citizens committee successfully conducted a millage campaign doubling the library budget. The library board is seeking a competent, enthusiastic person to manage the re-invigoration of the library. This is an excellent opportunity for a forward-thinking leader to expand library hours and services. The Library Director will manage daily operations, patron services, building management, and programs. The Director will plan organize and oversee all aspects of library services in conformity with the policies established by the Wayne Public Library Board of Trustees. The position reports directly to the Board of Trustees and will fulfill the following job requirements: Community Outreach and Public Engagement: Initiate and develop programming tailored to local interests and trends. Market library programs, collections and services through social media and print outlets. Cultivate community liaisons with businesses, organizations, schools, and city government. Be highly visible within the community. Library Operations: Manage library functions, such as collection development, acquisitions, and reference services. Manage recruitment, hiring, management, professional development, discipline and, if necessary, dismissal of personnel. Lead and inspire the staff in a professional manner, building team spirit and enthusiasm. Oversee maintenance of the library building. Research and manage building technology, including computer services. Prepare, write and manage grants and grant proposals. Prepare and manage the annual budget. Qualifications and requirements: Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited school. Excellent communication and public speaking skills. Effective interpersonal skills. Experience in library leadership and/or management. Ability to work in a collaborative manner with the Library Board, staff, and community.
