Fine art program--rural abandonment
by Rebecca Higgerson 19 Mar '19

19 Mar '19

If your community is interested in fine art photography, rural landscapes, abandoned homes, then I would like to highly recommend photographer Jackson Faulkner. We hosted him here last October and had a decent turnout of 14 adults (we tried to get an article in the local newspaper, but it didn’t come to pass). Jackson lives in Washington state but grew up in Michigan, and he comes home every fall to visit family. He is interested in booking 1-2 libraries on both the west and east sides of the state. He’s planning either the first or second week of October 2019. I have included his website and a recent interview he did, but to really get a sense of his art, check out his Instagram account @jacksonfaulknernet His passion is about capturing images of rural landscapes and documenting their history for future generations. His captions can bring you to tears; they are so beautiful. You can reach him at jackson(a)jacksonfaulkner.net https://www.roadsidereflections.com/ https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/capturing-the/ep-1-capturing-the-aband… We paid him $150 for an hour, but check with him to see if that is negotiable. Thanks, *Rebecca Higgerson* Director Brandon Twp Public Library 304 South Street Ortonville MI 48462 248-627-1474 *ENGAGE **•** EDUCATE **•** ENRICH **•** EMPOWER*

Dear Friend of HSM, Did you know that we run historical motor coach tours? The Michiganders on the RoadT motor coach tour program was developed by HSM to allow Michiganders to experience the culture and heritage of all 50 states with a group of like-minded history enthusiasts. Each tour is handcrafted by me, HSM's Director for Education, and includes one-of-a-kind itineraries featuring historical stops, museums, local attractions, nightly dining experiences in local restaurants, and comfortable accommodations at modern chain hotels. One of our upcoming tours is a trip to Charleston from May 1 to 9 called "Southern Hospitality Tour: Charleston & The Old South." Are you interested in exploring one of America's oldest cities with me? Would you like to see what all the fuss is about? Are you looking to experience local history around the United States, where all the details are handled for you? Join us as we travel to the culturally significant areas of the south and explore Charleston, America's hospitality center. Charleston ranks among America's premier tourist destinations, and for good reason: the beautiful city is steeped in history. Come experience its cultural heritage on our Southern Hospitality Tour. You'll also spend two days in North Carolina at Biltmore Estate in Asheville and Old Salem Village in Winston-Salem. This 9-day, 8-night tour from May 1 to 9 is a fantastic package deal with all dinners, breakfasts, accommodations, entrance fees, and transportation included for $1,995 per person. Walk through our 9-days on the road with the itinerary attached to this e-mail, or learn more <http://hsmichigan.org/2019/03/04/michiganders-on-the-road/> on our website. Where are we going? Take a peek at some of our tour stops along our 9-day itinerary: . Biltmore Estate in Ashville - this Downtown Abbey on steroids was built by George Vanderbilt in the late 1880s . Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site - the site of the Carolina colony establishment in 1670 . A horse-drawn carriage tour of Charleston's historic downtown district . Charleston Historical Museum - America's oldest museum established in 1773 . A driving tour exploring Charleston's unique Gullah culture . "The Battery" - a stretch of the Charleston peninsula known for its beautiful park and historic mansions . Fort Sumter - a pivotal player during the Civil War . While our Michiganders on the Road tours are mainly focused on the day's historic itinerary, our tour guide makes sure to line up well-known historic eats to satisfy everyone's appetite. Our trip to Charleston features the following historic, renowned, and just plain good restaurants: . Rickard Ridge BBQ - reportedly the best barbeque in Tennessee . Pack's Tavern - located in the historic 1907 Hayes and Hopson building . Hyman's Seafood - originally a dry goods store established in 1890 . Minimizing and Addressing Implicit Bias and Microaggressions in the Library Workplace - An InfoPeople Course
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 18 Mar '19

18 Mar '19

Minimizing and Addressing Implicit Bias and Microaggressions in the Library Workplace - An InfoPeople Course (March 26-April 8) Course Description: This two-week online course will utilize an assessment, discussions, readings, recorded lectures, resources and two online meeting to help you develop a better understanding of implicit bias and microaggressions. You will be able to assess your own biases and strategies to combat them. You will learn strategies to address, minimize, and overcome microaggressions. The instructor will provide resources and best practices for dealing with biases and microaggressions. While this can be a sensitive topic, you will be encouraged to ask questions, share experiences and participate in discussions with others. You will be able to immediately apply concepts learned to your own library and communities. The cost for this online course is $150 Librarians and information professionals cannot hide from bias: a preference for (or aversion to) a person or group of people. Implicit biases are hidden assumptions and stereotypes that exist at an unconscious level. These biases impact how we react and interact with others, specifically those of difference or perceived as "other." They are often overlooked and not discussed as they are not obvious behaviors. A microaggression is a comment or action that subtly and often unconsciously or unintentionally expresses a prejudiced attitude toward a member of a marginalized group. Microaggressions occur as a result of an implicit bias. This course offers the opportunity to learn more about implicit bias and microaggressions with reflection on the individual's own biases and awareness of microaggressions that occur in their workplace. At the end of this two-week course, learners will: * Understand how implicit bias is part of everyday life * Critically examine their own biases * Examine the relationship between bias and microaggressions and the damage it may cause * Understand the types of microaggressions * Explore effective practices for demonstrating positive responses within the workplace Awareness of our implicit biases and microaggressions, and how they can impact our peers and workplace is an important step to encouraging an inclusive work environment. This course will help learners apply strategies to minimize and overcome implicit bias and microaggressions in their library workplace. To register or for more information visit the InfoPeople site<https://infopeople.org/civicrm/event/info?id=825&reset=1>. Evette M.
