by Sean Marshall 21 Mar '19

Hi everyone! DPL is interested in the Steam PC Café Program(a digital video game distribution platform), but in our conversation with Valve (the parent of Steam) we still don’t know if any library has this offering for clients. We are asking if your library was ever interested in this program and if you offer it what has your experience been so far. Your help would be greatly appreciated. I'm with Cindy. To me, it's wrong to charge for DVD rentals. They're often cheaper than books at this point, and they're bought for with millage money. Ours check out for 7 days, then $1 per day afterwards. I'm hoping to go fine free in the future, though. MeL Minute: Fine Tuning Your Biography Search
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 21 Mar '19

21 Mar '19

Greetings Everyone, [A close up of text on a white background Description automatically generated]While the obvious place to search for great biographies in MeL's eResources may seem to be Biography Reference Center, we've found that Explora, History Refence Center, and Literary Reference Center are options rich in content as well. Biography Reference Center provides thousands of reliable full-text biographies, including the complete full text run of Biography Today and Biography, plus narrative and historical biographies not available in other databases. In addition to keyword search, users can locate biographies by subject, occupation, nationality, activity, gender, lifespan and more. Explora is the best option for biographies of present-day individuals, such as celebrities. The search results include video clips, primary source documents, reviews, conference materials, reports, encyclopedias (including Funk & Wagnall's New World Encyclopedia 2018), trade publications and eBooks. Additionally, there are hundreds of newspaper, academic journal, and magazine articles to consider. History Reference Center provides biographies of historical figures, documents, photos, maps, film, and video from leading history journals. Literary Reference Center includes biographies of literary figures, plot summaries, literary criticism, book reviews, reference books, magazine articles and author interviews. When researching biographies, take into consideration the occupation and time period of the person you're investigating. Is he an historical figure or a 2019 pop star? Is she an author or an actor? The best eResources for historical biographies are Biography Reference Center and History Reference Center. Explora is a great eResource to use when learning about pop stars, actors or any present-day politician or mover and shaker. Literary Reference Center not only offers biographies about authors and poets, but it also gives users access to items such as author interviews and book reviews. All these details inform which eResources to use to get the most out of your search. If your library provides the advanced search option, think about utilizing it to fine-tune your results. For example, if you are searching for biographical information on Ron Howard, add actor or director in the second or third search box. When you do this, only the information relevant to his work as an actor or director shows up in your results. Learning about each eResource and choosing the one (or two or three...) best equipped to help you with your research (or satisfy your curiosity) may seem daunting at first. Take heart! Ann Kaskinen (K12) and Theresa Runyan (Public), MeL's Engagement Specialists, are here to help. When you need assistance or additional training, just reach out: mcls.org/melrequest<http://mcls.org/melrequest>. Call to Action: Michigan School Libraries!
by Lester, Kathy 21 Mar '19

21 Mar '19

MAME's Advocacy Committee needs your help! *Please send a letter to your Michigan Representative.* *EveryLibrary has made it easy to do so at this link:* https://www.saveschoollibrarians.org/3billsmichigan It only takes one minute to do so. We need to fill our representatives in-boxes to let them know the importance of school libraries staffed with certified school librarians for our students and school communities! As you most likely know, our students' reading scores are near the bottom nationally. Michigan is ranked 47th in the nation in the ratio of students to school librarians, and only 8% of our schools employ a full-time school librarian. Our students deserve better. Thus, it is important to contact your representative. You can follow up your email with an email to meet with your representative. The legislature will be on break during the weeks of March 25th and April 1st, thus, this would be a great time to meet with them locally as they will be working "in district" during that time. {Or you could send *one* email to request support and a meeting by copying and personalizing this sample email <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DnsOybPVb_GhPrVrXGIQzIOvNuedo3xe1oqPmz5…>, instead of sending the EveryLibrary email with follow-up} *I**f you need support or talking points for a meeting, please let the MAME advocacy committee know.* *BACKGROUND INFORMATION:* State Representatives Darrin Camilleri, Matt Koleszar, and Kristy Pagan introduced three bills on Thursday, March 14 to require schools in Michigan to have a school library staffed with a certified library media specialist as well as staff to keep the library open when the library media specialist is unavailable. See: (https://housedems.com/article/dem-legislators-work-promote-improve-literacy ) MAME's advocacy committee has worked for several years to raise awareness of the critical need for effective school libraries and to have bills such as these introduced. The representatives want to raise awareness of the need for equitable access to school libraries staffed by certified school librarians to help them in their efforts to secure funding. Please send a letter to [or call] your Michigan House Representative asking them to support these three bills --- HB 4392, 4393, 4394. by Jennifer L. Dean 20 Mar '19

20 Mar '19

Hello, all - Please see below for this week's ALA News. A couple of other notes... 1) ALA voting is open now! As others have noted, we have lots of great MI candidates to vote for. Thank you to Steve Bowers for compiling the attached list - resending so you have it here. Check your email for your ballot - you may receive a mailed ballot if ALA was not able to reach you by email. Polls close at 11:59 pm on Wed, 4/3. 2) The ALA Office for Library Advocacy (OLA) is urging all library advocates to contact their representatives to ask them to sign the LSTA and IAL letters. We are short of last year, and working to match last year's levels. * Contact your Representative and ask them to sign the LSTA and IAL letters. The more calls from their home state and district, the more likely it is that a Member of Congress will sign the letters. You may participate by signing up for our engagement tool at https://cqrcengage.com/ala/?0 * The ALA OLA is especially working to reach newly elected Representatives who likely are not familiar with these programs nor have they seen these letters before. Review the list of names below. If a representative from your state is on this list, please contact their office today as the deadline is Monday. You may use the script provided here: SCRIPT 1. There are two Dear Appropriator Letters circulating in support of library funding and we note that your boss has not signed these letters. 1. One supports Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) which returns federal funds to our state libraries every year and is led by Representatives Raul Grijalva (Pronounced Gree-halva) and Don Young. 1. The second supports the Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) in the Department of Education and is led by Representatives Eddie Bernice Johnson, Don Young and Jim McGovern. 1. This may be the first time you are seeing these letters, but we are asking that your boss sign these letters and show support for the local public and school libraries in your district. 1. Please contact these offices today to add your name in support of library funding. We want to be able to tell the library community in your state that you support library funding! * For LSTA: Marilyn Zepeda at Marilyn.Zepeda(a)mail.house.gov<mailto:Marilyn.Zepeda@mail.house.gov> with Rep. Raul Grijalva or Truman Reed at Truman.Reed(a)mail.house.gov<mailto:Truman.Reed@mail.house.gov> with Rep. Suggested Program: Kim Darst - Iditarod Presentation
by Andrea Graham 20 Mar '19

20 Mar '19

Kim Darst from Husky Haven Kennels recently gave a presentation at my library on her 2009 Iditarod experience. We had a good turnout and rave reviews following her program. Kim’s program consists of a kid-friendly PowerPoint presentation, a meet & greet opportunity with her friendly sled dog – Mitch, and a hands-on experience by allowing patrons to stand on her sled for photo ops. Kim has a simple set up, is easy to work with and she’s a great storyteller! She’s interested in presenting her story at other libraries -- I highly recommend booking Kim. https://www.huskyhavenkennels.com/ choprwmn(a)yahoo.com 906-452-6014 Cabin 516-790-9183 Cell Andrea Graham Family Programming Chippewa River District Library 301 S.
