Your voluntary participation is critical in helping the profession of librarianship better understand the library as a workplace. The survey will be open through the end of 31 October and take approximately 10 minutes to complete. You will be asked to answer questions on how you feel at work and how often you feel that way. Join the Special Collections team at the Library of Michigan and help coordinate and build a plan for statewide community engagement focusing on our three core audiences: Public Libraries, Historical and Genealogical Communities and State Government. This newly created position will build relationships and collaborate with stakeholders in and outside of the library to expand knowledge and increase use of library resources and programs. The position will lead development and planning of all library programs and guide outreach activities of Special Collections staff. Additionally, this position will provide general reference, develop brochures, bibliographies, guides, presentations and other tools which promote successful use of Library of Michigan materials by the public as well as co-manage library website content and design. The Community Engagement Librarian is expected to travel in and out of the state and present to community and professional groups. This position represents the Library of Michigan within the department, state and national levels; participates in pertinent professional associations and acquires continuing education essential to carry out job responsibilities. Best practices guidelines for Michlib-l

Greetings Michigan Library Community, This is a quarterly best practices update for posting to Michlib-l. We welcome your participation on Michlib-l. There are a few guidelines that help improve the experience for everyone: 1. If you ask for group input on a topic, offer to collect the responses and then re-post them to the list so everyone can benefit. Be sure to embed those responses in the body of your message. 2. Please keep in mind when composing your messages that attachments are removed from posts for digest subscribers and in the archives. For maximum reach, embed the text you wish readers to see in the body of your message. If an attachment is especially important for its images, formatting or other reasons, upload it to your website and then link to it in your message to Michlib-l. 3. Do not post replies that are meant for one person to the entire list. You can accomplish this by using the "Reply" feature and not "Reply All." And, of course, a little patience goes a long way. We've all accidentally posted something to a list that was only meant for one person so gentleness with each other is helpful as well. Indie Author Event In partnership with the Library of Michigan, we are excited to host presentations on the business side of self-publishing, featuring Lansing area experts and a local author panel. Scheduled to appear: John Addis (self-publishing and marketing); Julie Taylor (self-publishing and the Espresso Book Machine at MSU Libraries); Laura Klynstra (book design); Author Panel (Stephen Mack Jones, Alexandria Sure, Tobin Buhk and Kristie Dickinson). A selection of titles will be available for sale and signing. This FREE event will take place Saturday, Oct. 13 from 1-5 p.m. at CADL Downtown Lansing, 401 S. Capitol Avenue. Collection Promotion As a way to promote our Halloween movie collection and events, CADL is partnering with FOX 47. The station has created a special section on its website that includes Halloween content like best movies, decorating tips, safety tips etc. CADL has provided some of the titles for the Best Halloween Movies for Kids section. Within the special section, there's a link to our catalog and ads linked to our event database. We also traded a Kindle Fire for inclusion on station commercials that promote the online content. (Attached is a screenshot) New Partnership Cosplay continues to grow in popularity so CADL has entered into a new partnership that will help us connect to this culture through events (library and on-site) and in-branch displays. A new partnership with How-to Halloween will get CADL in front of attendees of the How-to Halloween and Downtown Lansing Zombie Walk events to create awareness of our digital comics and other related services. More importantly, this partnership provides us with access to an impressive inventory of props and vehicles like the Batmobile, Batpod and the iconic Mystery Machine from Scooby-Doo. We will also work with H2H on creating CADL exclusive props.
