Over 98% of library funding is political in nature. 90% comes from the will of local voters and politicians, 3-5% comes from the State legislators and 3-5% comes from the Federal legislators. In the last 10 years, we've lost almost 20% of voter support for libraries putting our funding at risk therefore risking our ability to continue to serve our communities. In order to ensure that we have continued funding, we need to understand political power and influence. Patrick Sweeney is a tireless and innovative advocate for libraries. A 2007 graduate of the San Jose School of Library and Information Sciences, Mr. Sweeney is the former Administrative Librarian of the Sunnyvale (CA) Public Library and was Executive Director of EveryLibrary California, a statewide initiative to support library Propositions. He was awarded Library Journal’s “Movers and Shakers” award in 2015 for his library advocacy work. He is co-author of “Winning Elections and Influencing Politicians for Library Funding” as well as “Before the Ballot; Building Support for Library Funding.” He was recently recognized with a “40 Under 40” award by the American Association of Political Consultants for his work fighting for libraries at EveryLibrary. He is a lecturer at the San Jose Information School where he teaches courses on politics and libraries. He is active across social media as PC Sweeney. ________________________________ MORE INFORMATION: The School of Information at San José State University<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fischool.sj…> is the founding conference sponsor. MeL Minute: Using MeL eBooks in Online Programming
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 04 Jun '20

04 Jun '20

[A close up of a sign Description automatically generated]Did you know? The Michigan eLibrary subscribes to over 200,000 eBook titles through EBSCO. Using eBooks in Online Programming Using eBooks in online programming presents different questions. EBSCO has provided permission for all of the eBooks in our subscription to be used in their entirety for live online programming. When it comes to using an entire eBook in a recording of an online program, that is a different matter. You should make sure you 1.) avoid releasing a video recording into the public sphere where a full eBook is used in the recording and 2.) avoid monetizing the sharing of the recording for profit. Follow these tips to engage in appropriate use of MeL's EBSCO eBook Content: 1. For regular eBook use, stay within the guidelines provided by publishers. 2. For eBook use with online programming: a. Do not make video recordings available for commercial use. For instance, full eBook content cannot be provided in a situation where a fee is being charged to access it. b. Toolkit for Centering Data Around Racial Equity
by Mary Jo Vortkamp 04 Jun '20

04 Jun '20

Hi Team, As we look to the future, and data and data sharing become a bigger part of our jobs, we need to look at it through a racial equity lens. This toolkit brings up many questions and ways to look at data and data collection to make sure we are doing our best job possible to bring racial equity to the table. "Centering racial equity is not a single, discrete step. Our Toolkit<https://1slo241vnt3j2dn45s1y90db-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads…> for Centering Racial Equity Throughout Data <https://1slo241vnt3j2dn45s1y90db-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads…> Integration<https://1slo241vnt3j2dn45s1y90db-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads…> <https://1slo241vnt3j2dn45s1y90db-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads…> describes positive and problematic practices for centering racial equity across the six stages of the data life cycle: 1. Planning 2. Data collection 3. Data access 4. Use of algorithms and statistical tools 5. Data analysis 6. Reporting and dissemination" The link to the toolkit is here: https://www.aisp.upenn.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/AISP-Toolkit_5.27.20.… Please feel free to share! AWE computers
by Hartford Public Library 04 Jun '20

04 Jun '20

Dear Library Directors, Which has been more popular the AWE workstation or the tablet? I have two old AWEs from 2010. Are the programs different on the newer devices? I looked at the Ignite program provided by HATCH Early learning, but they are geared for schools. It's too bad because there prices are better. I appreciate your input as we are looking to equip our new children's area in our new library. Construction is scheduled to be completed around July 10. Hotspots & Mobile devices
by Hartford Public Library 04 Jun '20

04 Jun '20

Dear Libraries, I asked about hotspots and circulating computers in libraries. Some libraries went with T-Mobile hotspots at $38 a month. They say their is a government program. Most libraries that responded are using Mobile Beacon via Tech Soup. One library is using Sprint hotspot via Tech Soup for $1,200 a year for 10 devices. A library bought Chromebooks for library use but patrons prefer the desk top computers. They are considering loaning the chromebooks with using G-suite to set up and can disable the device if it is not returned. These were my responses. If anyone has other suggestions or advice, please advise. Regards,Stephanie DanielsDirectorHartford Public Library
