Fly to the Moon, explore the valleys of Mars, and soar to the edges of the known universe while learning more about this software and how you can use it. OpenSpace is free open source interactive software visualizing the entire known universe and a growing number of space exploration missions. Funded in part by NASA's Science Activation program, OpenSpace is used by planetariums and science centers, scientists and researchers, and science communicators. This first OpenSpace webinar will demonstrate the content and data that are available in OpenSpace. Join us again on June 18 to learn how to use the software yourself. He coordinates scientists, programmers and artists to produce scientifically accurate yet visually stunning and immersive space experiences in AMNH's Hayden Planetarium. Over the past two decades, he has directed six shows: "Passport to the Universe," "The Search for Life: Are we Alone," "Cosmic Collisions," "Journey to the Stars," "Dark Universe," and "Worlds Beyond Earth." Emmart's interest in space began early, and at ten, he was taking astronomy courses in the old Hayden. As a child born into a family of artists, he naturally combined his love of science with his tendency for visualization. His first work was in architectural modeling, soon moving on to do scientific visualization for NASA and the National Center for Atmospheric Research, before joining AMNH. Training Materials: On the day of the training, materials will be located in the Training section of the SSA internal website: https://solarsystem1.jpl.nasa.gov/user_login.php *An archive of this training will be available about a week following the webcast. Do NOT share the webinar or call-in information (web link, phone number, passcode, etc) with others, and do NOT TWEET OR BLOG what's being discussed in real time. Trainings are a time for YOU to become familiar with program information BEFORE conducting your events.

We had a great virtual discussion on Monday around making new opportunities for our community members with virtual programming. Our guest, Alyson Lobert, Director of Commerce Township Community Library, provided a lot of information as well as tips and resources on what her library is doing as well as collaborative programming with neighboring libraries. To review the notes and find the recording link to this discussion visit our Google folder here: https://bit.ly/lm-adult (includes chat logs) With the news that libraries can begin with their reopening plans now on the table we are going to skip the June 8 meeting. Join us again on Monday, June 15 at 10:00 am to hear We use the same link each time we meet and all the resources provided can be found in the Google document. You can add your own questions and tips to this as well to share with your colleagues. On June 15 at 10:00 am Eastern we will hear from University of Michigan's Bryan Maxey. He will be sharing on the topic of MOOCs, massive open online courses, and related issues such as how to access MOOC content in low-bandwidth areas, where to find free MOOCs on various platforms, and some samples as well. We hope libraries continue to build on the skills and creativity that they have exhibited during the stay at home environment. Creating new opportunities for library engagement in a virtual environment is still going to be necessary in the current time and into the future. Please let us know if you have questions. She will talk about how her library is working with virtual programming as an opportunity rather than a replacement and the successes they have found with the availability of virtual presenters for online programs that were otherwise prohibitively expensive to have in-person. Alyson will delve into making the new virtual experiences more interactive with participant engagement and how the library reached out to the community to find out what they want in the future and how their opinions may differ from what you expect. Planning for the next phase with Executive Order 2020-110
by Shannon White - Library of Michigan 02 Jun '20

02 Jun '20

Good morning libraries. As you may have heard there were a lot of changes to our sector regarding the ability to provide services. Below you can find the links to the new EO 2020-110 that includes allowances for libraries to reopen while following protocols set out for the retail community. You can also take a look at the quick update from the legal community here in yesterday's Foster Swift Legal Update http://events.fosterswift.com/viewmailing.aspx?MailingId=42301&MailKey=1716…. We recommend and encourage you all to read the full text of each of these two Executive Orders listed here in full to get a full understanding of what is expected of libraries. Executive Order 2020-110 - Temporary restrictions on certain events, gatherings, and businesses - Rescission of Executive Orders 2020-69 and 2020-96 - https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-530620--,00.html Executive Order 2020-97 - Safeguards to protect Michigan's workers from COVID-19 - Rescission of Executive Order 2020-91 - https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-529864--,00.html Remember that libraries can still move forward with phased in re-openings. There are many considerations library administrators will need to think about as libraries reopen and having permission through the rescission of the EO's that closed your space to the public does not mean that libraries have to discard plans that include phased in opening plans such as material return only or curbside service for a period of time. Libraries are still required to undertake a good deal of planning, provide a COVID Response plan, and much more as the retail sector is required. If phasing in services is the path a library would like to use to bring their operations back up to full speed in order to ensure the facility and staff are prepared and the best safety practices are in place before moving to a public re-opening as currently allowed then that may be the best route for your organization. We encourage library boards and administrations to consider and review the full Executive Orders and all the requirements within as they safely plan ahead. Also, the Governor's workgroup for the Entertainment and Arts & Culture sector was created and is currently meeting this week. There are representatives from the Michigan library community on this committee along with member of the Michigan museum community. We expect this workgroup will be providing information after June 5 to assist libraries as they move forward with planning to again provide services in their local communities. Please remember to review the State of Michigan Coronavirus website at www.michigan.gov/coronavirus<http://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus> for information as well. Though we do not have answers for everything we are continuing to work on information during the week to help provide answers to questions from the community. If you have questions, please reach out to our staff. Please remember to use your information literacy skills as well. As members of the library and information science field we should be the best practitioners of this concept. Remember to take time and use those abilities as we work to once again support our communities across the state. Shannon Shannon White Library Development Manager Library of Michigan, 702 W.
