New Opportunities in Adult Programming, Monday, June 1 at 10:00 am Eastern
by Shannon White - Library of Michigan 01 Jun '20

01 Jun '20

Our virtual meeting, New Opportunities in Adult Programming, is back after our Memorial Day holiday. Please join us at 10:00 am on Monday, June 1 to hear about how one library is moving into virtual programming and what they are doing around this new service opportunity from online baking programs, to self-care with a local therapist, and also moving into virtual program collaboration with neighboring libraries. Alyson Lobert, Director of Commerce Township Community Library, will be our guest on Monday, June 1. She will talk about how her library is working with virtual programming as an opportunity rather than a replacement and the successes they have found with the availability of virtual presenters for online programs that were otherwise prohibitively expensive to have in-person. Alyson will delve into making the new virtual experiences more interactive with participant engagement and how the library reached out to the community to find out what they want in the future and how their opinions may differ from what you expect. You can always find our meeting notes from each week's virtual meeting in this Google folder https://bit.ly/lm-adult (includes chat logs). You can also find recordings for each week in this document. We will save the recordings to the cloud for a few weeks each. If you missed an earlier one you can find a recordings there for a few weeks. We use the same connection links every week so join us either online or by phone at: https://michigan-host.zoom.us/j/98381393043?pwd=YkJJUkdGZFV5VEVvckVJY3g3R3h… Password: 340524 Telephone: 216 706 7005 OR 8664345269 (US Toll Free) Conference code: 579192 Let us know if you have questions. A quick note as I forward this here, as a public "Thank You!" to Karen Day at CSLP as she retires - she has shared years of knowledge, friendly help, and fielded thousands of questions from Michigan libraries while at CSLP. Karen has been with CSLP from nearly the beginning and has seen many wonderful summer programs come and go. We wish Karen the best as she starts her next adventure! How is your library "Reimagining" summer? Please send your photos, ideas, and any informative details to Luke Kralik at: luke.kralik(a)cslpreads.org<mailto:luke.kralik@cslpreads.org> I would love to share them in our newsletter. Looking for some ideas to use or share? https://www.pinterest.com/cslpreads/<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinte…> Increasingly, public libraries are feeding hungry bodies as well as hungry minds during the summer - and throughout the year. The CSLP's Child and Community Well-Being committee is developing resources to support and encourage library participation in the USDA's Summer Food Service Program and other initiatives to help kids and teens stay nourished, active, and healthy when school is out. These resources include the Libraries and Summer Food<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cslpr…> page on the CSLP website; a Facebook group<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.faceb…> for news, support, and resource-sharing; and an ongoing series of stories showcasing the experiences of libraries around the country. Supporting Food Literacy When You Can't Gather: Read Eat Grow Gets Creative By Rebecca Antill, Youth Services Consultant, South Carolina State Library For several years, the South Carolina State Library has been supporting a statewide Food Literacy initiative that we titled "Read Eat Grow." This initiative supports libraries in offering a variety of programs that help patrons learn the story of their food. We have assisted our public libraries with programs about gardening, composting, cookbook clubs, cooking demonstrations, healthy living, health literacy, nutrition, and so much more! Of course, most of these all happen in person, so when the COVID-19 pandemic closed both the State Library and our public libraries, we knew we had to think outside the box. [https://mcusercontent.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/images/93062e59-b85a-45…] Lyndsey Maloney, Horry County Memorial Library, with a beautiful pan of Peach Cobbler The Charleston County Public Library, which has a strong ongoing partnership with the Lowcountry Food Bank to promote healthy cooking in low-income communities throughout the county, began filming short, kid-friendly cooking demonstrations to share on their Facebook page. These videos feature Devon Andrews and her family mixing up easy recipes together at home. Devon also shares science demonstrations and shows that families can replicate the learning opportunities at low cost, though not necessarily low mess! [https://mcusercontent.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/images/843372e1-4b24-43…] Lyndsey Maloney from the Horry County Memorial Library system created recipe demonstrations featuring recipes from the digital collection found at the State Library's website: https://dc.statelibrary.sc.gov/<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdc.statel…> These recipes are copyright-free and, as Lyndsey's reveals, oh so tasty. Rebecca Antill, the Youth Services Consultant at the State Library, and Ellen Dunn, Public Information Coordinator, also filmed themselves at home cooking quick healthy recipes for library staff to prepare. At the Lexington County Public Library, staff have been assisting at school lunch sites, passing out free books while observing the proper safety protocols and social distancing. Another public library will be offering take home recipe ideas paired with a Facebook live demonstration from library staff throughout the summer. We are excited to see what other creative ways our libraries will find to encourage healthy living and promote food security to their communities in the upcoming months! Designing a Program with All Families in Mind by Susan Locander, Youth Services Manager, North Riverside Public Library Library summer reading programs are beloved community traditions that promote literacy and encourage creative expression. Yet, they can seem unwelcoming and inaccessible to some families. Incorporating flexibility and choice into both your program design and rollout can be key to creating a program that will work for all. * Registering for a summer reading program by completing a traditional registration form may be problematic or seem intrusive. Before registration opens, determine what information is essential and what's not, and let those decisions determine the registration data you request. (To get a sense of the wide variety of families your readers could belong to, visit the CSLP Inclusion Resources on Alternative Families: https://www.cslpreads.org/inclusion-resources/alternative-families<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cslpr…> ) Allowing families to provide the information that best fits their unique situation may increase their feeling of acceptance, and reduce stress all around. * Regular logging of books read or time spent reading is often challenging for families, particularly when the readers are too young to take on this responsibility. Just keeping track of paper logs can be difficult, and even more so for readers living in multiple locations, and/or with multiple parents, grandparents or guardians during the program. Allowing readers to create their own reading goals and being flexible with reporting deadlines and methods - online, phone, email, paper ("official" log or other) -- can help them get the most benefit from your program. * No matter how well you prepare, unanticipated and challenging situations will arise. Many libraries will be offering all or mostly online summer reading programs this year, yet the goals remain the same: to promote literacy and encourage creative expression while building community. As we work to meet this year's unique challenges, designing your program to include all types of families will help you not only expand, but also strengthen your community. Virtual Programs with the Library of Michigan
by Oster, Adam (MDE) 29 May '20

Many Michigan libraries and historical organizations are turning to virtual programming to connect with their patrons during the COVID-19 Pandemic. For those seeking potential speakers, look no further than the staff of the Library of Michigan. Staff from the library's Special Collections Department have presentations available on a wide range of topics related to Michigan literature, history and genealogy. A list of these topics as well as additional information may be found on the Library of Michigan's website at: https://bit.ly/2TMJmGS. Inquires for potential presentations can be made by emailing to Librarian(a)Michigan.gov<mailto:Librarian@Michigan.gov>. No kid hungry...
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 29 May '20

29 May '20

Hello Libraries! Did you know that Michigan's public library sites served 33,025 meals in the summer of 2019? That was an increase of 46% from 2018!!! With 50 libraries serving as sites last year, I think we can certainly strive for even greater impact in 2020. To become a Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) site go to: https://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,4615,7-140-66254_34491---,00.html for details. June 3rd is the deadline, but sponsors can continue to add sites for a few more weeks. Learn more! On this morning's webinar with Sara Harmon of the Michigan Department of Education's Office of Health & Nutrition, we talked about the Summer Food Service Program<https://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,4615,7-140-66254_34491---,00.html> and their "Meet Up, Eat Up, & Read Up" campaign. There are a lot of waivers and extensions to this year's program, so take a listen. Your library might want to consider being a "Grab & Go" site... To watch the recording go to: https://michigan-host.zoom.us/rec/share/6s5OEp_6tXlIQc-dwUzifLALB461X6a81yQ… Password: 0v%2%WB2 The slides are attached or you can access the SFSP slides online<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VEYCnRdPfNsMU7jBVEhhBuR1_skxEhwA/view?usp=…>. The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) also has a great "Libraries and Summer Food" site: https://www.cslpreads.org/libraries-and-summer-food/ with resources, planning ideas, and other ways to help. Reach out! Connect with a local sponsor<https://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/2017_Sponsor_Directory_610745_7.pdf> to become a site. Can't find a sponsor in your area? Reach out to local school system or businesses to see how you might collaborate, or even become a sponsor location to provide shelf stable meals/snacks (you don't need a kitchen). Sara addresses such ideas in the webinar linked above. Don't forget, CSLP/LM created Read Up!<https://www.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/LM_2020_SFSP_Read_Up_G…> - a guide for Summer Food Service Program sites<https://www.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/LM_2020_SFSP_Read_Up_G…> with enrichment activities that support summer reading, created with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. You can edit this guide to insert your library information and provide copies to sponsors/sites in your region. Job Share Role - Library Manager
by Kelly L. Jordan 29 May '20

29 May '20

Does anyone have experience with a job-share manager role in your library? If so, please respond directly. "In light of all that has transpired over the past few months, we are looking for library experienced staff to assist with guidance and implementation of many of the essential services we currently do not offer at our small, rural library. We know that once we reopen and if school this Fall cannot resume as normal, they will be more critical than ever. We have a very small staff with the passion and desire to assist our patrons and help carry out the services, but we lack the hands-on experience to bring us up to speed quickly. I know that our library needs to evolve so that our community continues to see the value, but I am already struggling to not only find the guidance, but to maintain my own work/life balance. (Granted, we all know the stresses of this pandemic haven't helped.) I am currently working on a co-manager / job-share proposal to share with my City Manager, but was hoping there may be others out there who have maneuvered these muddy waters before." Thank you for your help. Kelly

But to be honest, the most difficult decision I have ever made was deciding to cancel all of our summer in person programming. Two Articles For Sharing
by Jim Flury 29 May '20

29 May '20

Good Morning, Below are links to two articles I thought to be worthy of a share. One is an opinion piece by the President of New York Public Library called "Libraries Must Change." The second is from PEW Research, showing the level of confidence the public has when it comes to separating fact from fiction as it were, concerning COVID-19. Libraries can play a vital role here.
