ClamAV 0.98.6 We were advised by the counsel for the state library that we could ask patrons to wear a mask so long as we wrote it into the policy, posted it, and it applied to everyone. It is in the policy. FYI - Northern Michigan University's COVID preparedness plan is available at https://www.nmu.edu/riskmanagement/covid-19-preparedness-and-response-plan. This is for the university as a whole, not the library, but it may provide libraries with useful examples. I wasn't on the team that wrote the document, but I may be able to answer some questions. Grand Rapids Public Library Eliminates All Overdue Fine
by Kristen Krueger-Corrado 08 Jun '20

08 Jun '20

* * *Grand Rapids Public Library Eliminates All Overdue Fines* * 1. GRAND RAPIDS (June 8, 2020)The Grand Rapids Public Library has eliminated fines on all overdue materials. Overdue material will no longer accrue fines and accounts with old fines have been forgiven. 11,700 library accounts are currently blocked from using the library because of overdue fines. Library accounts with over $10 in fines are not able to check out materials or use digital collections. Revenue from overdue fines in 2019 was approximately .7% of the library’s budget. In 2019, GRPL eliminated all fines on youth material. Since then, there has been a 19% increase in the return of long overdue youth material and the average length of checkout only increased by one day. 84% of all checked out library materials are returned before the due date. 74% of overdue material are returned within the first week of being overdue. Library patrons will still be responsible for the replacement cost of items that are lost or damaged. “The decision to go fine free is about equity and access.” remarked GRPL Director John McNaughton. “Neighborhoods most impacted by library fines are also the neighborhoods with the lowest median income. Fines disproportionately affect those in the community that could use the library the most. ” In some areas of Grand Rapids, nearly 20% of residents are blocked from using the library because they have over $10 in fines. “Now, more than ever, we need to make sure that everyone in the city can use their library,” continued McNaughton. “The library shouldn’t be a source of stress or a burden. It should be the antithesis of that. So if you have never used the library--welcome. If fines have been keeping you away--welcome back.” The Grand Rapids Public Library is currently undergoing a phased reopening after being closed since March due to COVID-19. Library patrons can now return material to outside book drops and the new curbside hold service, GRPL To Go, begins June 29. Visit www.grpl.org/reopen <http://www.grpl.org/reopen>for more information. The Grand Rapids Public Library is key to a dynamic, creative, livable city where people come together to learn and be heard. ### Images: https://bit.ly/2XZEkrS *

CORRECTION RE SQUARE FEET REQUIREMENTS IN EO 2020-114
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 05 Jun '20

05 Jun '20

Hello: During the Director's discussion this afternoon, I indicated that the square footage requirement in section 6(c) (pertaining to occupancy requirements) INCLUDED the TOTAL square feet of the building. Upon additional review and discussion, it turns out I was mistaken. The Square feet determination would be for CUSTOMER AREAS ONLY. This provision only applies to libraries in regions OTHER THAN 6 & 8 with buildings that have 50,000 square feet or more of public/customer floorspace. This provision would apply to less than 27 libraries here in Michigan. So, the CORRECT answer to the question - "Does the square footage include public and staff space?" is NO - the square footage is calculated ONLY for PUBLIC, or CUSTOMER areas of the library. Staff areas would not be included. Libraries in regions 6 & 8 (the UP and the top of the mitten), no longer are subject to this provision, regardless of their square footage. I apologize for any inconvenience my error caused! Have a great weekend! Sincerely Clare Clare D. Membiela, MLS, J.D. Program Recommendation
by Dee Beaver 05 Jun '20

05 Jun '20

Hi all— I would like to recommend Kevin Wood, a professional Lincoln presenter, to other libraries. We hosted him through a Zoom presentation last night. I have attached a Word document with his promotional information. He also allowed us to stream the event live on Facebook and to archive the video for one week after the event in order to broaden our reach. Mr. Wood is looking to expand his presence in Michigan. He shared this with me, Michigan is "where I grew up (until age 12), where I went to college (a little school up in East Lansing), and where my wife and I still have a lot family (including in Walled Lake and Troy). We’re actually hoping to re-locate back to Michigan in another year or two. The timing for all this would seem to be good because there was another longtime Lincoln presenter in the Detroit area, Fred Priebe, who has recently had to retire due to severe illness.” Here is some feedback I received from patrons on the program: "This was one of best library programs (if not THE BEST) we've ever "been" to! And we've come to a LOT of library programs. He was AMAZING!!!!! I watched it with my 15 year old son and it was the very best way to learn about history!!!!” "It was a thoroughly enjoyable hour - so well done! I don't know the name of the gentleman playing Mr.Lincoln, but I'd like him to know that I felt transported back in time as he spoke about "his" life and times. Also, he was very adroit at staying in character while answering the questions. It was great fun!” "Just finished presentation. It was excellent. I would like to see his other presentations on Lincoln in the future if possible.” Dee Beaver Adult Services Librarian Plymouth District Library 223 S. Main Street Plymouth, MI 48170 734-453-0750 <callto:734-453-0750> ext 205
