Program Recommendation: Robert W. Fieseler, author of "Tinderbox: The Untold Story of the Up Stairs Lounge Fire and the Rise of Gay Liberation"
by Maria Williams 09 Jun '20

09 Jun '20

Dear Michlib- If you are seeking an author for a virtual event I'd like to recommend Robert W. Fieseler, acclaimed debut author of the book *Tinderbox: The Untold Story of the Up Stairs Lounge Fire and the Rise of Gay Liberation <https://wwnorton.com/books/9781631491641>*. The book tells the story of the 1973 arson fire at the Up Stairs Lounge in New Orleans that was the largest mass murder of queer people in American history prior to the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting. It won the 2019 Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime as well as Lambda Literary's Judith A. Markowitz Award for Emerging LGBTQ Writers. ALA named it a Stonewall Honor Book in Nonfiction. Mr. Fieseler was lovely to work with and was an engaging, knowledgeable speaker. Our event with him was through the library's Instagram page, but he is amenable to other virtual platforms. We paid his honorarium with money donated from an endowment fund. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions, or you may contact him directly by email at wordbobby(a)gmail.com. I wish you all good luck and strength of spirit as you prepare your libraries to reopen to patrons in the coming weeks! Warm regards, M. Summer Library Programming 2020 update - Imagine Your Story
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 09 Jun '20

09 Jun '20

Hello Summer Library Program Planners, I know I've been sending out a lot of emails. So, I wanted to send one on summer library programming alone, just so it was all in one spot. Can you believe it's June already? Most of this is refresher information but I do have 1 new announcement: LM's got themed Reading Logs<https://bit.ly/LMlogs2020>!!! Woo-hoo! Very exciting. You can edit your library information in (or add a reading suggestions), then just print or email it to families. Don't forget, CSLP materials are available to all public libraries in Michigan thanks to IMLS. If you don't have an account at www.CSLPreads.org<http://www.CSLPreads.org>, or forgot the manual access code, then please contact me. Okay, here are those resources I wanted to highlight: * CSLP National Summer Reading Champion is Carmen Agra Deedy and she has 2 PSA videos<https://youtu.be/iFDyKbKYw0c> as well as Facebook Stories<https://www.facebook.com/carmenagradeedy> (posted Fridays at Noon all summer long)! Infographics<https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1wPamov4gKxukUhP4owBMDfLztRnMzKO4?us…> are also available for sharing her programs on social media. * Teen Video Challenge: https://www.cslpreads.org/programs/teen-program/2020-teen-video-challenge/ - entries due August 7th. Great thing to encourage teens to get creative and maybe highlight how they "reimagined" this summer! * The CSLP Toolkit for Social Media<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.goog…> for 2020's Summer Library Program - "Imagine Your Story!" Please feel free to schedule social media posts on your library's social networks using the samples provided. Graphics are available in your digital manual under file folder 09 as "Social Media Files." #ImagineYourStory and #LibrariesImagine are the official hashtags for 2020, plus in Michigan I encourage you to use #MiSummerReads. * Read Up!<https://w3.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/LM_2020_SFSP_Read_Up_Gu…> CSLP has created a guide for Summer Food Service Program sites<https://w3.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/LM_2020_SFSP_Read_Up_Gu…> with enrichment activities that support summer reading, with support from the Library of Michigan and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. * Reading Logs for editing: https://bit.ly/LMlogs2020. How do I edit a pdf? Answer: https://acrobat.adobe.com/us/en/acrobat/how-to/pdf-editor-pdf-files.html. * 2020 Updated CSLP Posters for printing in-house or at a local professional printer: http://bit.ly/LM2020CSLP. All additional artwork by the amazing children's illustrator LeUyen Pham, and support graphics, are found in the online manual. * PSA's - there are some more generic PSA's<https://www.cslpreads.org/2019-psas/> from CSLP that may or may not work for your library during this unique summer. * Early Literacy Playlist<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jhd2CFVTcfk&list=PLe3krHkVt7MaXzw65rsy9HUZb…> - sing and play along with supports from the 2020 EL manual right on YouTube! * MeL also has great #ImagineYourStory eResources and eBooks: https://bit.ly/MeLSummerReading * Archived webinars<https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,9327,7-381-88855_89737-301245-…> from LM include "DIY Puppets and Props<https://youtu.be/-5lNFhT0UTQ>" with Jenifer Strauss recorded in May, and the Youth Services Advisory Council's "Imagine Your Story<https://youtu.be/WrHglCmfszI>," recorded in January. * Online summer library programming platforms? LM contracts with Demco to offer your library a Wandoo Reader site, if you don't have an online platform please contact me. Wandoo Reader's themed game characters and CSLP banners are up and ready. * A link to the Summer Library Program Survey will be posted to listservs in July. Details on the Q's for that survey coming soon, however the questions are always similar to your annual state aid report, so please keep track of your program numbers as always. Thanks to CSLP and support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. I'm probably forgetting something, but I know how to find your inbox... Have a great weekend and #ImagineYourStory! Michigan Humanities is more committed than ever to connecting people to better serve all of humanity, and we stand together against oppression. Through listening, advancing understanding and equity, and truly learning from history, we are committed to real, systemic change. In the weeks and months ahead, we will continue seeking out and sharing resources that can help us strengthen the ways we listen, understand, advance equity, and learn from history. We have been paying close attention to the intentional, thoughtful work of our partners across the state and the wide range of humanities collaborations that are underway. We strive to build an environment where all voices can be heard and everyone's human experience can be shared. At a recent MH Board of Directors meeting, we discussed important aspects of our work, and the creative ways we can provide programs and grants despite the pandemic. In May, we were able to provide organizations with a record amount of grant funding, totaling over $860,000 in awards. A total of 306 applications were received for Michigan HOPE Grants emergency funds with a total of more than 2.5 million dollars in requests; 116 grants were awarded totaling $660,000. During her seven years in that position, she grew from a clueless newbie to a strong community advocate. With some training, strong partnerships, and little bit of fake-it-till-you-make-it, she and her team positioned the library as a go-to resource for the entire community. She shares her experience with community engagement efforts as an example of libraries at the center of small rural communities. SRLC Presents: It's All About "We"! - Andrew Sanderbeck<https://libraryofmichigan.z2systems.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/event.…> 07/07/2020 02:00 PM - 03:30 PM ET Your biggest assets are your employees and volunteers. As more and more folks approach our desks with questions regarding basic needs assistance and other social problems, we must begin to consider our work in ways beyond books and typical customer service. We know that libraries can change lives. In smaller communities, libraries can also save lives. This session will highlight the difficulties facing many patrons, how the public library serves to protect them, and ways our institutions can strengthen the resiliency of individuals and communities." SRLC Presents: The Connected Library - Patrick Lloyd<https://libraryofmichigan.z2systems.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/event.…> 07/21/2020 02:00 PM - 03:30 PM ET The Connected Library: Vetting and Partnering with Social Service Providers Libraries tend to think that we can do it all! While we may host events from weddings to videogame tournaments and although we may answer questions on everything from research papers to restaurant recommendations, sometimes we need to know when to reach out to experts in our communities. As libraries continue moving to address more than just the informational needs of our patrons, it is important that we connect and build relationships with local professionals focused on mental health, basic needs, and other social challenges of our communities. This session will explore why it is imperative that libraries connect with social service providers in their communities, how to cultivate these connections, and tips to make sure the agencies you work with are effective, ethical partners. Glenna Godinsky (Gail Borden Public Library District and a 2020 Library Journal Mover and Shaker - Community Builder) and I (St. Charles Public Library District and a 2017 ALA Emerging Leader) are proud and honored to be presenting to be presenting the webinar, Providing Library Senior Services in a COVID-19 World, on Jun 17, 2020 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM CT. For more information and to register:nnlm.gov/class/...<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnnlm.gov%…> Providing Library Senior Services in a COVID-19 World How to provide library service to seniors, the most vulnerable population affected during COVID-19, has been the question raised by outreach librarians across the United States. According to the Central for Disease Control (CDC), 8 out of 10 deaths related to COVID-19 are individuals aged 65 years and older. While we might not be able to visit our seniors or facilities in-person for the foreseeable future, libraries can reach this population while we shelter in place. During this webinar, please find tips and tricks that David J. Kelsey of the St. Charles (IL) Public Library District (SCPLD) and Glenna Godinsky of the Gail Borden (IL) Public Library District recommend in serving the senior demographic during COVID-19. Presenters David J. Kelsey has been the Outreach Services Librarian at the St. Charles Public Library in St. Charles, IL since 2015, where he coordinates the department's services and programs. David is the President-Elect for the National Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services and has spearheaded outreach interest networking groups for the Reaching Across Illinois Library System, System-Wide Automated Network, and Library Integrated Network Consortium. He was a 2017 ALA Emerging Leader and is the recipient of the Illinois Library Association's 2018 Alexander J. Skrzypek Award. His team is the recipient of the national 2018 ASGCLA Exceptional Service Award, administered by the Association of Specialized, Government, and Cooperative Library Agencies, a division of ALA. For his contributions to the outreach field, David received the 2019 John Philip Excellence in Outreach Award from the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services, an affiliate of ALA. David has been published in the March/April 2017 and July/August 2018 editions of Public Libraries magazine and was featured in the March/April 2018 edition of American Libraries magazine. David received his Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Library and Information Studies and is the recipient of the 2019 Alumni of the Year Award. Glenna Godinsky Life Enrichment Liaison at Gail Borden Public Library District in Elgin, IL and a 2020 Library Journal Mover and Shaker - Community Builder, is a certified dementia practitioner with a background in special education, having run a non-profit organization for at-risk students for over a decade. Requiring Masks responses
by Rebecca Higgerson 08 Jun '20

08 Jun '20

Thanks to everyone for your responses!! On Mon, Jun 8, 2020 at 11:00 AM Rebecca Higgerson via Michlib-l < michlib-l(a)mcls.org> wrote: Dear Directors, We are in the process of having our Reopening Policy approved by the Board and one of the decisions we have to make is whether or not to require that patrons wear a mask. The alternative is to leave it up to whatever the Executive Order states. How are you handling the patron mask issue? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are opening on 6/22 for curbside service. Will probably open to the public with restrictions — how many in the library, computer use by appt only & at this time we do plan on requiring patrons to wear masks. Here is an excerpt from Clare’s resource page on this issue: “*CAN LIBRARIES REQUIRE PATRONS AND VISITORS TO WEAR PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT OR TO ENGAGE IN BEHAVIOR SUCH AS HAND WASHING, HAND SANITIZING OR DISTANCING? * Libraries can not require patrons to wear protective equipment, nor handwash, but they can place hand sanitizer and tissues and garbage cans strategically around high traffic areas, post signage requesting such behavior, and protect the staff. Any behavior deemed intentional can be handled according to library policies on unacceptable patron behavior.” Our original policy from Anne S had people required to wear masks through step 5 (the one right before return to normal). The document she sent last week has wearing of masks connected to the Executive Orders so it looks as if we need to be under an EO requiring masks to make people wear them. I preferred the original policy! We reopened today at 10 a.m. We decided to post a request that patrons comply with State guidelines but we will not insist they do so. Our staff will comply with all guidelines. So far this is working well in our small library. I have a Board meeting next week but I'm recommending the board incorporate a statement that says something like the library policies will reflect whatever is required by E.O. That way if we have a chronic violator we can put them into the normal patron policies as if they refused to wear shoes or a shirt. We are requiring patrons to wear masks to enter – because that is what the Executive Order says. If they don’t want to wear a mask, we will see if we can get what they want and bring it to them. If they want to use a computer – tough luck. If it is a medical reason – we will do the same thing – but maybe consider giving them a laptop for computer access in the vestibule or at an outside table (tethered down). If it is a religious reason (God doesn’t wear a mask), I will ask them to remove their spectacles, hearing aids etc. and I may consider it. We are requiring a mask to enter the building, offering alternative accommodations if patron cannot wear a mask (we will get their requested items and leave for them curbside/outside for them to pick up). We are supplying disposal masks for anyone without one, and will allow any type of face-covering (shirt pulled up over nose and mouth, bandana, etc. We are an academic library, so it's a little different for us. We will require masks and limit the number of patrons in the library but also have a few designated, isolated areas where commuting students can take off their mask and study or use a computer. Considering there are students who are on campus all day, it is unreasonable to require them to wear a mask all day long. They will be required to wear one while in class or the hallways, etc. I am ordering plexiglass corrals and using tape on the floor along with small enclosed rooms or partitioned areas to designate as one person only, unmasked area. This is all based on the current EO and situation, so things may change. I also plan on ordering plastic bags for the keyboards and computer mice instead of requiring students to wear gloves while using the computers. It seems that it is easier for typing over longer periods of time, we will see! We posted signs on both interior and exterior doors with the relevant text from the Governor’s latest EO, and left it at that. We are a very small library, just one person here at a time, so any true enforcement would be really difficult. We also have extra disposable masks should a patron want one. At [our library] we are not allowing patrons back into the building until July 6th and we are not requiring them to wear a mask, but we are STRONGLY recommending that they do. Staff will be wearing them once the public is allowed back in the building. We may find it necessary to tweak our policy once we are up and running fully. We got our policy from Anne Seurynk and just left in the text about “if required by EO.” We can always change that if the Governor lifts the order (or it expires) before we’re comfortable with it, but I suspect masks requirements via EO (either state or county) will be with us for quite a while (WHO just changed their recommendation to encourage masks for all in public spaces), so I decided not to overthink it at this point. I would be shocked if the reopening policies we are having approved right now will go unaltered until we are “back to normal.” We are a small library with a small budget. As all of us know, enforcing the mask rule has been met with some resistance by the public. I can't afford to hire security and the safety of our staff is very important. We decided to offer an incentive to the public for wearing a mask. We will waive up to $5 in fees per day for anyone wearing a mask. This includes print fees, fax fees, or late fees. It's a win-win for us right. We don't want to handle money right now anyway. [Our Library] is following the executive order regarding patrons and masks. Our staff is required to wear a mask and they are doing so happily. I'm sure some of our patrons will not wear masks, although we will offer patrons who don't wear masks a free paper mask. Since masks are such a political issue, unfortunately, I'm sure we will have some patrons who are looking for an argument and I don't want our employees to get involved. Our policy calls for adherence to Executive Orders. We don't feel that our patrons would be receptive to having to use a mask if it was not required by the Governor. Hope that helps! [Our Library] Board approved pandemic addendums to our patron code of conduct, which includes that masks will be required for patrons age 5 years old and up. The Executive Order, when it requires libraries to reopen based on the retail sector limitations and regulations in the order that opened that sector, requires patrons to wear masks. The “if medically able” qualification is not in the order, but one would assume it would apply. The order also requires a sign on the door stating the mask requirement. If you are following the order, you are requiring masks. We are. Now, I will use my judgment to avoid being shot over the requirement. We are leaving it to the executive order. But we're not currently in an area with a high rate of spread and neither I nor my staff want to deal with frequent, potentially negative interactions. We'll have clear signage indicating people who are medically able to do so are required to wear masks in the building per EO for as long as that persists. If someone comes in not wearing a mask and coughing or behaving in some manner that causes alarm among staff and/or patrons, I will speak with them and ask if we can provide them service at curbside or in a space away from the general public (not sure where that space will be yet... *sigh.* Because the EO says masks are required in enclosed public spaces the policy the board approved last week says they are required. Our attorney, Anne Seurynck isn't sure libraries can do that legally so if it changes once the task force working on library guidelines gives us information we will change it from required to strongly encouraged. This is all so confusing and it's hard to stay on top of things as they change constantly. Our policy states that while the EOs require masks to worn patrons must wear masks. EO right now says MUST wear. My attorney said we have to follow her. Hoping she lifts this by the time we open to the public which is June 29th. As I understand it, we are requiring the patrons to wear masks but if they refuse we cannot force them. We have a large supply available if they do not have one with them. Our policy will be if the executive order requires masks indoors, then yes, we will require them for everyone. Our response will be that we are following the law/rules that have been required of us to have our doors open. If the executive order states that masks are no longer required, then we won't require patrons to wear them. [Our] Library is a small Class II library in a rural county. Our whole county has not been good at following the face mask requirement. Our reopening plan states that face masks are required by staff and patrons as long as it is mandated in the EOs. While they are required, we are not going to be able to enforce it. Our signage will say "for the safety of our staff, please wear your face mask". We are requiring patrons to wear masks unless medically unable. Also providing disposable masks for those who do not have. *Rebecca Higgerson* Director Brandon Twp Public Library 304 South Street Ortonville MI 48462 248-627-1474 *ENGAGE • EDUCATE • ENRICH • EMPOWER*
