State Aid Payments

Good morning everyone, The final State Aid payments to all public libraries that met the requirements for state aid and all Library Cooperatives have been processed. Please note that the holiday might slow down the delivery of your check. I will be compiling a complete listing of all payments made, that will be on our website next week. I will also be sending a listing of all indirect state aid payments to cooperative directors at the same time. Penal fine letters used to distribute fines were mailed out to county treasurers on July 1, 2020. The law states that annual distributions should be made no later than August 1, 2020. Applications open for ALA opportunity Resilient Communities: Libraries Respond to Climate Change

The American Library Association (ALA) invites library workers to apply to be part of Resilient Communities: Libraries Respond to Climate Change<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ala.or…>, a pilot program to help public and academic libraries engage their communities in programs and conversations that address the climate change crisis. The project will fund in-person and virtual film screenings, community dialogues and related events based on local interest in 25 public and academic libraries, and it will provide instruction and support for the libraries to be centers for community education and support during extreme weather events. Selected libraries will receive: * $1,000 programming grant to support in-person or virtual climate-related programs and activities * a small collection of documentaries/docudramas on DVD, with public performance rights * Climate Resilience Hub support, provided by Communities Responding to Extreme Weather (CREW) in coordination with ALA * digital promotional materials, online learning opportunities and more * Participating libraries will collaborate with a community partner organization to host three public programs in 2020-2021 that focus on climate change science, sustainability, emergency weather preparedness, environmental justice or related subjects Given safety and restrictions around in-person programming due to COVID-19, ALA encourages applicants to consider virtual programs or other formats that prioritize the health and safety of library staff and patrons. New Opportunities in Adult Programming - HOTSPOT LENDING, July 2 @ 2pm ET

It's not quite the holiday weekend yet and we have a great afternoon meeting in store for you today. This is a great opportunity for libraries that are applying for digital inclusion CARES Act grants from LM to learn what they can do with the funding. LM currently has CARES Act grants funding available for digital inclusion efforts and that includes obtaining hotspots for lending as one use of the funds. Thursday we will hear about one library's hotspot lending program and also look at other hotspot lending best practices from around the country and find materials that you can use to set up your own lending program. Graci Harkema specializes in equity and inclusive leadership training within the Fortune 500, small businesses, and non-profit organizations. She is currently writing a book on her story, including her experience as a person of color and as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community in Michigan. Session 2 - Supporting LGBTQIA+ Patrons & Staff in Libraries - Tuesday, July 14, 2020 from 1-1:30 pm eastern time Presented by Kelly Boston (she/her/hers) This session will go over basic information and terminology in regards to gender identity and sexual orientation, as well as how intersectionality with race, disability, and more shape the identities of library patrons. Best practices for inclusivity for patrons and staff will be shared. We will also cover the concept of self-censorship during collection development, the importance of including materials with characters and information that represent all patrons including LGBTQIA+, and will include resources to guide you if they are challenged. Kelly Boston is a certified school library media specialist in Michigan, and holds an MLIS degree and ND school library endorsement. She is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and lives with her wife and two cats, Calvin and Hobbes, in Grand Rapids, Michigan where she serves on the Grand Rapids Public Library Board of Commissioners. Session 3 - Building (More) Inclusive Libraries - Tuesday, July 21, 2020 from noon to 1:30 pm eastern time. Presented by Dr. Jessica Garcia (she/her/hers) In this session we will discuss the business case for diversity and inclusion as it applies to library staff and members, introduce the concept of implicit bias and how it shows up, and actionable steps to reduce bias in our encounters. Jessica Garcia, PhD, is the Founder and CEO of Hummingbird Solutions, LLC, a diversity and inclusion consulting firm. In this role, she offers business and community members the tools and resources to create and sustain inclusive environments for their employees, clients, and constituents. Garcia has consulted with and trained thousands of participants across a wide range of industries in the public and private sectors providing interactive, customized services on topics such as best business practices; implicit bias and microaggressions; bystander intervention; inclusive leadership; recruitment, retention, and advancement; and inclusive teaching. In addition to her work with Hummingbird Solutions, LLC, Garcia serves as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Manager for the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan. Prior to joining the University of Michigan, she held a joint position in the Department of Sociology and the Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives at Michigan State University. She earned her bachelor's and doctoral degrees from Michigan State University in Sociology. The cost to attend the series is $25. Will perform a variety of professional librarian duties and provide training and direction to GDL patrons, staff and volunteers. Will serve as a professional resource in the areas of literacy and youth services. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES · Evaluates program needs and assists in carrying out services district-wide for children and young adults. · Creates, plans, markets and leads children’s and young adult library programs both in our 19 branches, and off-site. * Provides outreach in the form of literacy events, classroom visits, story times and other programs to schools in Genesee County. * Provides literacy presentations to schools and organizations. · Provides story times to our 19 branches on a rotating basis. · Participates in the scheduling and training of outside story time providers. · Provides youth services information via various digital platforms. · Works with Technical Services Manager and Branch Librarians in the area of collection development for children and young adults. * Purchases children’s books for the Headquarters story time collection. · Partners with area schools and other agencies to promote collections and services offered to children and young adults. · Effectively provides instruction and assistance to staff and patrons, both independently and in a classroom setting. * Builds strong community bonds by working with community leaders. * Enforces GDL patron policies and procedures. Effectively handles patron and vendor complaints and requests with discretion and good judgment. * Develops a thorough and ongoing working knowledge of all GDL equipment used in the library. * Gathers data and prepares reports or statistics as assigned by the Community Relations Manager. * Contributes to social media with well written, grammatically correct posts. * Stays current in new library services and trends in youth services through reading, seminars, workshops, webinars and conferences. * Routinely seeks out and identifies sources for grant funding opportunities. Prepares well-written and documented grant proposals specific to children and youth services. * On occasion, may be required to work in branches and perform other library duties as necessary throughout the district. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES · Must enjoy working with children while creating a high-quality experience for the children, parents or guardians. · Demonstrated passion toward seeking programs and services that meet the needs of GDL’s children and young adults. · Excellent verbal and written communication skills with both small and large audiences. · Strong proficiency with electronic databases, Microsoft Office applications, social networking sites and mobile technology. · Ability to get along with diverse personalities and populations. · Must possess tact, good reasoning abilities and sound judgment. · Ability to work as a team or independently within a fast-paced environment. · Proven time-management skills. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE · Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an American Library Association accredited library school · A minimum of a Level 2 certification by the Library of Michigan within ninety (90) days of hire. · One year of professional experience in a library. WILL BE REQUIRED TO · Work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours, around programs, events and community outreach. WORK ENVIRONMENT The location of the work site is primarily the GDL Headquarters location. Significant travel throughout the district to attend or conduct library programs and other literacy events. The location will vary between branches of the Genesee District Library System, and the schedule will vary according to the needs of the public and the GDL System. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
