Greetings! I know many of you are often on the hunt for new tools and ideas to develop programming for your community, especially now that we're exploring the new world of virtual programming. Did you know that you can find programming ideas and activities in the MeL eResources? Promotions Toolkit Looking for easy ways to promote timely topics and resources in your community? Now that we're doing more online, you may find that you're sharing more on social media or via email newsletters and blog posts. The resources in this toolkit support the marketing you do directly to your communities. The toolkit is a robust collection of templates, graphics, and copy so you don't have to write your own, if you don't want to. You can use these materials just as they are, or if you are inspired by the ideas in toolkit you can create your own assets, either by modifying what's in the toolkit, or by creating something from scratch. Virtual Anti-loneliness Programs - a NNLM webinar

Loneliness is something our young adults and senior citizens might especially be experiencing at this time... Connections: Virtual Anti-loneliness Programs in the time of COVID-19<https://nnlm.gov/class/virtual-antiloneliness-programs-covid19/26910> Network of the National Library of Medicine Wednesday, Oct 7, 2020 2:00PM - 3:00PM CT (3pm ET) Loneliness and social isolation are rampant in America, according to many experts. The Center for Disease Control calls loneliness an epidemic and says it has a higher morbidity rate than obesity (about the same as smoking two packs of cigarettes a day). Studies have shown that loneliness cuts across all age, social, race, and economic demographics. We have many virtual friends, but few in reality. COVID-19 has exacerbated this problem. While many of the programs outlined are designed for in-person, there are ways public libraries can help combat loneliness even in a remote fashion. The Oceanside Library has created a program to combat social isolation/loneliness. The program, Connections, crosses all demographics and includes passive as well as active programming. The presentation will address: * Identification of existing programs which have an anti-loneliness component in them * Creation of programs which have anti-loneliness as a key function * Adjusting programs to have an anti-loneliness component * Dealing with COVID-related issues Tony Iovino has been the Assistant Director for Community Services for the Oceanside Library since January 2015. Prior to that, he was the head of litigation and managing partner for a law firm in Garden City that he started in 1986. Tony received his undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond, his Juris Doctorate from St. John's University School of Law, and has completed a Master of Science in Library Science program at the University of Kentucky. Tony is a published author (Notary Public Enemy, Diversion Press) and poet. He served on the Oceanside School District Board of Education and has served as a director and attorney for dozens of non-profit and public boards. He and his wife of 40 years, Angela, have two grown daughters. Presque Isle District Library receives LSTA grant for Sesquicentennial Digitization

Presque Isle District Library is Awarded Federal Grant for Digitizing Historical Collection ROGERS CITY, MI We are pleased to announce that the Presque Isle District Library is the recipient of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), "Library Services Technology Act (LSTA) Improving Access to Information" grant through the Library of Michigan in the amount of $15,084 for the digitization of a historical collection entitled, "Presque Isle County Sesquicentennial (1871-2021) Digitization Project". This extensive collection will be made available to the general public and academia through the Michigan Service Hub of the Digital Public Library of America. Regional support for this project will be fulfilled through the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS). "Once this historical collection is digitized, it will be made available to the general public worldwide and we are committed to ensure that the collection is sustainable and maintained in perpetuity. Also, October is Family History month. This is a great time to celebrate our local genealogical history", stated Amber Alexander, Library Director. Alexander added, "We plan to hire two part-time individuals who are skilled in computer technology to help with the scanning and digitization process for the duration of the grant project". Partnering with the Presque Isle County Historical Museum, this collective archive spans one hundred and fifty years. "The museum has a massive collection of documents, photos, and genealogies that trace the 150-year history of the county and Rogers City. Through this partnership with the library, our most valuable research and reference materials will be available online and at no cost to people around the globe. This has been a goal for the museum that goes back to when we first acquired the massive Calcite photo collection", stated Mark Thompson, Curator and Executive Director of the PICHM. 2 of 2 Both organizations will be working together to scan and digitize the Great Lakes maritime and lumbering history, early homesteading, the historic Calcite Collection, oral history recordings, archival correspondence, and related documents. There is nearly seventy six thousand items to be digitized and preserved for future generations. The grant period is for one year starting October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021. Anne Belanger, who will act as the grant administrator on the project, is the program director and grant writer with the library. "During the statewide shutdown due to the pandemic, I was researching grant opportunities that addressed the needs of our community and this particular grant was well-suited for both the museum and the library. It offered us an opportunity to collaborate in a meaningful way to address how we could preserve the historical collection of our combined archives. It was a very competitive grant. Only ten applicants were approved out of twenty three applicants. We are very grateful for this opportunity", stated Belanger. "As pillars of our communities, libraries and museums bring people together by providing important programs, services, and collections. These institutions are trusted spaces where people can learn, explore and grow," said IMLS Director Crosby Kemper. "IMLS is proud to support their initiatives through our grants as they educate and enhance their communities. The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation's libraries and museums. We would like to ask your participation in Library Snapshot Week to begin on Monday October 12th and run to October 17th to coincide with MLA's library appreciation month this year We will be sharing and retweeting your #MiLibSNAP content and posting some of our own. We hope that you will join us and promoting the awesome things you do! Please participate using whatever social media platforms you are comfortable with. Feel free to post multiple times over the week and make this your own social media campaign to promote your library. When you Post,Tweet, Snapchat or Instagram use the hashtag #MiLibSNAP so everyone can easily find (and possibly retweet or share) the great things that you are doing in your library and community.
