Little Free Library Marcy Simons, Organizational Development Librarian, University of Notre Dame During the global pandemic, libraries have seen a continuation and extension of their role as "second responders" in their communities-providing information, services and resources to their users in light of events that affect their populations. ALAO seeks submissions for the "Libraries and the Second Responder Role" volume that delve beyond examples and case studies to examine the how libraries integrate within and serve their communities during times of need from the library management perspective. Proposals in the following areas would be of particular interest * Emergency preparedness and disaster planning * Assessment and data driven decision making during times of change * Transformation and Covid with a focus on voluntary and positive change * Responses to climate change * DEI and facing community challenges * Effects of challenges on marginalized communities * Building community partnerships for disaster and emergency response This will be the first volume of Advances in Library Administration and Organization (ALAO) to publish in 2023. About the Advances in Library Administration and Organization series ALAO<http://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/products/books/series.htm?id=0732-0671> offers long-form research, comprehensive discussions of theoretical developments, and in-depth accounts of evidence-based practice in library administration and organization. The series answers the questions, "How have libraries been managed, and how should they be managed?" It goes beyond a platform for the sharing of research to provide a venue for dialogue across issues, in a way that traditional peer reviewed journals cannot. Through this series, practitioners can glean new approaches in challenging times and collaborate on the exploration of scholarly solutions to professional quandaries. How to submit We are currently seeking proposals for the 2022 volume on Libraries and the Second Responder Role. The University Libraries at Western Michigan University seeks candidates for the position of Assistant Professor, Humanities Liaison Librarian. Western Michigan University is seeking a humanities liaison librarian to fill a 35-hours a week, benefits-eligible, one-year term faculty position in the WMU Libraries’ Instruction and Outreach Department. The humanities covered by this position include English, Communication, Spanish, Philosophy, Gender & Women’s Studies, Comparative Religion, and World Languages & Literatures. Entry-level applicants who have comfort and confidence with teaching and reference are welcome. Western Michigan University Libraries is committed to the University’s strategic direction on inclusive excellence and equity and actively works to promote a diverse and accessible University culture. WMU Libraries strongly encourages applications from candidates in underrepresented groups, multilingual candidates, and those with a passion for inclusion, accessibility, disability advocacy, and related themes. Support will be provided for time to attend professional development activities, initiating scholarship, and developing service experience. Starting salary for this position is $64,250 for those eligible to be hired at the rank of Assistant Professor and $52,625 at the rank of Instructor. Responsibilities: • Planning, teaching, and assessing information literacy instruction sessions in the assigned liaison areas • Consulting with classroom faculty on information-literacy related assignment design and content-related library collections • Meeting with students for individual reference consultations, which includes maintaining an open online calendar for scheduling consultations • Providing online reference via email and LibChat • Updating LibGuides, online tutorials, and other online learning objects to support the curriculum in the assigned liaison areas • Promoting library resources and services to the assigned liaison departments via multiple communication channels • Responding to inquiries about library instruction, reference, and collections • Participating in library events and initiatives • Supporting colleagues with high teaching loads as needed • Participating in faculty governance and other shared leadership opportunities Minimum Qualifications: • A master’s degree from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) or international equivalent as identified by ALA, or a completed bachelor’s degree and verified enrollment in an MLIS program with an anticipated graduation date no later than May 30, 2022. • Demonstrated potential for achievement in library instruction and reference in a liaison librarian environment, including comfort in initiating new conversations, public speaking, and facilitating group activities. • Familiarity with common library instruction tools and resources, such as discovery tools, humanities databases, LibGuides, teaching and learning tools (such as Blackboard or D2L), assessment software, and citation managers. • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity. Preferred Qualifications: • Demonstrated content knowledge in the humanities. • Experience in an academic or public library in an instruction or reference role. A master’s degree from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) or an international equivalent as identified by ALA is required. Over the summer a common theme shared among the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA) and other SLA staff, was the responsibility libraries have to communicate the truth to its patrons and our community. COSLA is collaborating with the New York Times to help bring clarity to this question. Please join us on Thursday, October 14th 330-5pm ET to start the conversation on how this can be achieved. Session Synopsis: Amidst a polarized national climate, both public libraries and journalism publications share a responsibility to inform the public and remain balanced. They both also work to foster community and build bridges. How do they each navigate this responsibility? How do they champion the truth, while remaining balanced and providing a space for discourse?
